16 THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE SUNDAY. JUNE 2, 1878&—SIXTEEN PAGES SAN FRANCISCO. A Few Remarks About En- glish Tourists. The Hon. E. B. Washburne Flatter- ingly Received. May Music, Phonographs, Telephones, and Railroad Runners. Lawrence Barrett Achieves Great Sue- cess at the ‘“Californin.” The True Inwardness of the Great $35,000,000 Suit. ENGLISH TOURISTS. Special Correspondence of The Tribune. Sax Francisco, May 25.—Our city is full of strangers just now, some {rom across sess, some from the Atlantic side, and some from the ru- ral districts. They give quite a diversified appearance to our streets as they stroll through them in groups looking at the sights. They are readily .+ distinguished, both from each other snd from ourselves, English tourists are casily known the world over, rather, 1 thiuk, from & eavricious aud vari- ous fancy in thearticle of traveling hat than for any more marked peculiarity. A large number of them came over in the Jast Australian steam- er, and every individual one has an indvidual stvle of head-gear. Some wear the shelterless Glengarry pounet, some a little, round, flexible cap, and many of them various nodfications of the Derby. with long, light veils draped thereon with studied carclessuess. San Francisco is the first American city upon which many of them set foot, and they are contivually amazed at the size, the bustie, and the civilization of a city so iar upon the out- posts of the known worid, ‘The Chiuese sre naturally the first matter of interest, except to_tlose who come by way of Ching, und the dummy strect-car scems to come next. Thero is a group of them at every prominent corner watching the workings of 1his, to them, new locomotion, which was de- scrived ina Chinese sketch by a local variety :rtist as 8 car with “po pushee, no pullee, xo lke belice.” The passer-by bas the fall benefit of an En- an’s curbsiove discourse. His lungs are ws are positive, acd his wnable. Helas a faive idea thst the American lan- fuage is 85 foreizn as. Greek or Italian, and the accowpanying impression that ali foreigners are slightly deaf.” He gives Lis order at the table Q’notemn a voice cistinetly andible to every oue in the room. He looks “at the women as if theyawere a portico of Mme. Tussand’s exhibi- tion” He is much more careless of the con- ‘venances than when at home. But he is withal an exceedingly intellizent observer, and, if he Temain with us any leogth of time, carries awny with bim a very fair general impression. + But he alwiys continues 1o thing, notwith- standing a1l our multiiude of modern conven- jences, that we know notting about Low 1o live. He looks at us with pitying eyes when we begin our wine list at the wrong end, and regurds the lot-water faucet as an ebervating influence in the progress of the nation. Victoria's birthday is alwags celebrated fu San Francisco, and the Englishmen who recently ar- rived must have felt that it could not be utierly he lana of the strancer when they found them- sclves biddeu to a banquet in honor of her Brit- annic Majesty's natal day. The most distinguished of the Evglish visitors isthe Earl of Lewes, a Peer of considerable ‘prominence, judging from the reception he has met with at the hands of the British residents. EX-MINISTER WASHBURN Our most_distinguisbed American visitor is x-Minister E. B. Washburne, who is making » Oying pleasure trip, aud utterly eschews poli- tics. ‘The ubiguitous interviewer managed to enchain bim for a quarter of an hour the other @ay, but, after a scries of long-tried and well- assured jourpalistic inventions for the succeseful carrving on of the interviewing bosiness, found it impossible to gravitate to- ward the political situation. The ex-Am- bassador warmed, glowed, poetized over the climate of California and over our *‘beautiful dty, which sits like a queen on her golden shores at the western gate.”? They all fuy that. In point of fact our city i not beautiiul, but, like the ugly girls in the Sunday-school books, it is good.” But the speect-makers ail tell us it is beautiful, and that is a very nice, round sentence to come toa period with. Mr. Washburne is naturally in hizh favor with the Germans. A larpe club of them gave him s Yocal terenade & few nighis after bis arrival,— ic was too indisposed for several days to re- ceive any attention,—~and he responded with a speech. It was addressed to the German Club, but was probably intended as a general response 10 all Californian hospitality. It was only a smail extemporancous effort, but the most casual listener could not fail to koow that the speaker was born to be a diplomat. It is a nice matier to address a German representation on the sabject of the Franco-German war, and at the sawe time to compliment the French Goverument. If he mastered the mntricate difiicalties of bis position during that trying time as skillfully as he managed to delicately convey the idea tbe other pizbt that the German, French, and American Governments were all banded to- gether for the especial protectionrof Germans iu France, it is small wonder that the American people have been so loud in praise of his aiplomatic career. Heis anoble-looking man, fashioned in the Websterian mold, aud is of the type of an Awmerican statesman of another generation. He bas the old-fashfoned courtesy of manner oud the dignified address which is so attractive 0 the Calilornian. These little things are rare With us, where every one belongs to the newer, younger time, und has vie freer, easier way. It would be possible to count uvon tne fingers the number of men promivent smongzst us in any calling, who may be termed gentlemen of the old school. . _But what a fascination have manuers of the old school for every one, man or woman. who comes within reach of their graceful influence! Minister. Wachburne is accompanied by a large party of ladics and rentlemen who bave Lud a special car devoted 10 their use, and who seem to e eujosing themselres thoroughiy. They will 2o 10 Yosemite, the G crs, Ore- o, and all points of interest on th coast. THE TELEPHONE. But the telephone is an immense favorite, and has been put into very meneral practical usc. It hos already been placed in many of the Jarge manufacturing establishiments where there arc seversl storics, and has even been ifutro- duced in some few private houses, This, how- ever, has been rutber for social amusement than surthing clse, as the connections are not en- - eral evough o make it practically useful for housebold purposes. It bids for, when its uses are develo, ed, to Hval to a considerable extent the District Telegraph box. That useful little electrical ardele has obtained an immense stronghold, :l:l;rr;.;:sp Iy since its conso'idation with the e cowpanies, a consolidation where Vot are beucited: o ne may ring the cull now for one’s butcher or baker, aud in a hall-bour or so, according 1 distance, hie will come tearing un'to the goor. A8 3 yuve de restance, 3 munster Pphonograph bas been imported, which, it is intended, shall be heard throughout the entire hall with perfect distinciness, ‘Thus far, however, the new toy has acted abominably. Perbaps it is affected, like all volces new to the country, with vivlent influ- enza. At all events, thourh it repeats a brief sound faiutly. such as whistling and singing, or a short, pointed oath from the disgusted clee- tricians who are trying to get it 1o orver, it preaks down ignominiously at the gecond half of the first stanza of * Mary bad a little lamb.” Possibly it has an ear for the eternal fitness of things, and feels that in this soit land and sun- Dy clime it should only furnish sclections from thie works of the foet of the Sierras. The phonograph is not a vopular institution here as yet. In point of fact, it hus been a sig- unal {zilure wherever tried, and has ouly served 10 show how 1iotous is the imagivation of the Eastern reporters. Perhaps under stimulus of the surrounaings it may do better at the big Festival. ¢ RUNNERS.” The consolidation of the District Telegraph Company with tbe carrage companies has abolished one great nuisauce to travelers,~the hotel-runver. e is an extinet institution. All the carriages appertaining to all the first-class notels beloug to the * United Carriage Com- pany,” who are serenely indifferent as to which lotel the passenger may choose. The bowling mob of frantle, excited hackmen who once greeted the unhappy traveler with the names of all the various botels, roared iu all the vari- ous kevs which the human voice male is capa- ble of sScunding, has subsided into s group of perfectly well-conducted men, who take you where you want to go without any fuss. A few stragerlers trom the lesser houses still raise a mild din, but the effect is not so mad- dening as it once was. But the hotel-runner has been bountifully re- placed. Existence to the trayeler is now made oune prolonged azony during the sojourn in San Francisco by the raliroad-runner. The creature is as numerous as the Kansas grasshopoer. ile has the assiduity of the female book-agent, the cheek of the imsurance-agent, the uasive ways of the lightning-rod agent. Ileis = per- Teet harlequin in his mode of ineress. e sets in one knows not how. iic knows a traveleras upmistakably as he knows the fizure4. He goes to his hotel apartinent without announce- ment, without a card. He engages in conver- sation whether the traveler will or no. If the tourist says he is enzaged, the runner says he will wait.” If the tourist announces his inten- tion to 2o out, the runner mildly offers to ac- company him. ~He talks like s panorama- lecturer, and the cards of his company are as numerous as the cards of Ah Sin. By {he time a man bas been interviewea by a whole tribe, e almost feels it a conscientious duty on his part to send himself on in sections after bie Jeaves the Central Pacilie. in orcer prop- erly to distribute his patronage amongst such enterprising peopte. ‘There are honorzble exceptions to the race, as awatter of course, but the honorable excep- tiens are all too fe THOE CALIFORNIA THEATRE. This establisment, after beiog closed for o fortuight, was opened again on Monday night upder the new management. The repars cousisted of cousiderable serub- bing and a little cainting, but the house looked brght and cheerful, partly because it was clean, but more especially because it was full. It is difficuls to sav what impulse prompted the peo- vle to turn out in large foree, for there had not been time to make any changes fo the company, and the star, Lawreuce Barrett, was uot new to the people, and bad even been a mild failure on the occasion of his last visit 1o California. It was the sheer good-wlit of the house which filled it—a good-will which bas quite survived the storm of disaster which encowpassed it so long. . ‘The new manager, Gen. Barton, iz feeling his way cautlousty. None of his people have Leen enraged for the season, but only from week to week, until the success of Lis venture is as- sured. Retrenchment Las Jbeen his watehword everywhere. The big chandelier which orna- mented the top of the house, and whose light- ing by electricity when it was new in the house was one of the attractions of the evening, hus been removed. T'ue ballet bas been cut down extensivel; ‘The stare-manager and prompter now do the work which once required four men. It atl works very well so far, but the theatre which once was famed for the magnificence of its expenditurcs can not afford to lapse too far the other way. g e However, all, as yet, is but an experiment. It is the inteution to keep the engazements which have been made with the nore attractive stars, such as Jefferson, Rienold, ete. After the expiration of their engacements the plan of action will be definitely marked out. Mr. Lawrence Barrett was quite unnware of aoy change when be arrived bere, and, to his astonishment, found it necessary to make terms With an altogether new management. It is a singuiar cofncidence that he who had so much to do with the buildine up of its cor- liest fortunes ehould Le the first to heip it to Tise after its decline. Singular to say, although he lived bere so long, and has been hiere so mauy times, and has not_aiways succeeded wonderiully, though al- ways well liked, he fs now the rage. 1iis reception has been something like an ovation under the prescnt condition of ailairs; and there are not a few who do not hesitate to vlaco him at the very head of the American stage. Edwin Booth, over whom we raved, and on whom we spent all our money, is invidiously compared with him. Strange publi On Monday he is to produce Howells' new play, “A Countericit Presentment.” A new piay in & favorite actor’s repertoire is something so grreatly to be desired that it is al- most sure to be judged lenicntly. But from Howells especially, who is so graceful o storr- teller aud so charming a limner of character, e expect much. We shall see. At all events the California Theatre has a fair start on its secoud road to fortune. THE $35,000,000 SUIT. Some days ago a complaint was filed In the Twelfth District Court by Jobu IL. Burke against James C. Flood, Jotn W. Mackay, James (. Fair, and all the other names and properties which represent tbe bonanza firni. The com- plaint sets forth that the plaintiff is a stock- Lotder in the Consolidated Virginia Mining Comvavy, and that by misapproprintions, illegel contracts, etc., all of which are duly set forthin lewal terms. he, tozether with all the other stockholders, has been defrauded to the tune of 535,000,000, for which modest. amount be brines suit. ‘The news of such an enormous suit fell like a thunderboit upon the community,—upon none more than upon the stockholders. The ques- tion was asked wonderfully, “Who is Jolm . Durke!” 1t transpires that he Is a compara- tively recent arrival o California, and bas “been engaged as reporter upon the Aforning Chronicie during the = pust six months. Upon consulting the buoks of the California Mine, it was discovered that 100 shares of Culifornia had been transferred to Jolin H. Burke’s nccount some two or three days previous to the brinmog of the suit. In three days he had been injured $35,000,000 It was evident immediately that there was a wheel within 2 wheel, and it did not take the bouanza people long to find out the workings of the fnner wheel. The whole affair is brought about by 8. P. Deey, for many years a prominent stock specu- lator, and ouce the boou fricnd of J. C. Flood. It was his custom to get “points’ from Flood in a social way. although Flood is a man not addicted to point-giving. When the big fire gecurred in Coneolidated Vireinia in the full tide of the biz $10 dividend time, a great dresd fell upon ali the bolders of gm&solldnlcd Virginia stock, S. P. Dewey in- uded. He consulted his oracte. to know if the divi- dends would soon beresumed, and was informed by Mr. Flood that if the shaft was on fire— they bad not been able to determine—they would not, but that 1f the fire bad not extended to the shait, they would resume In forty or fifey days. Mr. Dewey immediately feared the worst, and Tushing into the market sold his dividends on 15,000 shares at §5 s sbare. The dividend was not passed, and Mr. Dewey lost the §75.000 he had hoped to make. His wrath was decp and Joud, and his enmity o the bonanza firm ever sioce bas been manifested in many wags. ‘The autborship of all the letters which had so @uch to do with the tremendous decline in the stock market has been attributed to him. There have been some stormy meetings at which there hos been much bitter expression of feel- lng on both sides. 2 t §s sald that Dewey has offered to corapro- mise with the bonauza peovleif they would take LD ehares of California oft bis hands at $30 pershare. But Mr. Flood lLas positivels re- used 10 come 1o any terms whatever, and Mr. ewey makes his last strike witn the lawsuit which he has brought in the name of John 1i. Burke, an ftinerant Bohemian, who is making something zood out uf the use of his name. Now that his plans have come to lght, he may see fit to use his own name. It is only to-day that the mystery of the biz suit has had any exvlanation, and all Is vet mere rumor. But it will be o bitter contest, vindictively Faged on the one hand, and spiritedly resistey o te uther, Jassarra, CLOEHING. IE KILLED THE WOLF. Gen.
