SAN FRANCISCO. Stagnation in Finance, Politics,. and Society. ‘Why the <« Chronicle” Is Down on Flooa & O’Brien. A Sketch of the Several Clubs of San Francisco. Ths Fapny Way in Which the Bokemian Was Orizinated. A Veritable Crushed Tragedian Takes Cold Poison. FINANCIALLY. Swectal Correspondence of The Tribune, Sax Fraxcisco, April .—We have fallen into 3 state of utter stagnationin our town—polit- ical. financial, social. The Legislature having adjouroed, and the lobbyists having pocketed their supply of the #poils, the political bulabaloo is over for the present. All the commissions have heen created, and al! the offices filled. There isnoth- ing for the boys to do but rest on their oars till the next hreeze blows up. Financially. there is a dead calm. which is bet- ter perhaps than a destructive gale, but, when even money-getting becomes s tame pursuit, what is to become of Californians? Ina coun- 1ry where evervbody deals in stocks, from the milliopaire who rattles to his door inan ele- gantly-appointed couve, to the man who con- sents. sfier much persussion, to carry off the fwiil-barrel in bus cart, every tusinessis peculiarly Bensiuve 10 the action of the #tock market. Notwihstandimg the defeat of the Tuttle bill, there uas been an enormous deciine in stock: roeculution recently, In fact, the brokers depend lurpeiv upon Easiern orders to puil them throuch. Califormians have become weary of bucking at a wine at which they eun mever win. The great Fonanza mavw ewaliows evervthing avd nevor dis- porzes People 4o noi alwais realize their sriev unces until they are {old of them, and in thie in- wtsnce their wrougs have been put before them in sach strong colars that feeling is risine very hizh. There arc few people with the moral courage 10 be in- ent Lo uewspaper cemsure or praise. 1t is a peculineity of the CAromicle that, if 1t once goes affer any one, it coes after him forever, Tt has Duthing complimertary o say of the irm of Flood & O'Brien. and, with sil their dividends. and minee, aud mills, and bauks, and vaults, they are tronbled by it 1t s not probable that it ean ever bring the “four kings,” ue it calls them, to penury, hat it can block their yame, 'There would be no market and no Spoils withont the ontsiders, and the Chronicle has frichtened the outsiders. Flood & O'rien buy po real estate, build me Loukes, promote mo enter- prires, and_are intercsted in mo labor-giving chemes. The Chronicle regards them as befng as complete non-producers as the Chinese. Al the money they make descends into the capacious vaults of the Nevads Bank. and is anly brought out agnin 1o lnan to poor, hard-up devils at big rates of in- terest. The Chronicle bas a very graphic and complete way of presenting these little facts 20 its readers, and_the consequence i a very lively war of word o the street between the two factions. Every one who has been very badly used during the Fiood & O'Bricn regime. sides with the Clron- e. Every one who hae an animus against the Chron- icle_sides with Flood & OBrien. and declares that the mines were never before £o well managed. Whichever is right. or whichever is wrong, it is evideat, from the marked decline in basiness, that * outsiders fear there i8 something rotten fn Den- mark. o THE CLUBS. Socially, pleasure-making is at a full stop, partly on account of the Lenten season and partly on account of & very general packing up for the French Exvosition. Aside from the lively Saturday afternoons in the Park, there is very little refaxation, and the consequence is a full attendance at the clubs. Our city is quite liberally supplied witn them. The Union Club is the club par exceilence, for, while the members of the Tnioa belong to near- Iy all the other clubs in town, there are many members of the other clubs who do not belong o the Union. It is the oldest of them all, and is conducted more nearly upon the English plan than any of the others. Tt has for many years_occupicd the rooms in the old Wells-Fareo Building. The ceilings are low. the doors somewhat cramped. the windows are filled with little old-fashioned panes of glass. The fumiture was somewhat aptiquated, nmtil very recently, when they pscked off all the old =tufl and replaced it with modern gildings, tapes- trics, leathers, and Eastlake styles.
