1% THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY, MARCH J0, IS7T8—SIXTEEN. FAGES. ’ G DMACHINE! NEW YORK. A Wonderful Machine that Always Talks Back. Vir. Thomas A. Edison's Latest and Greatest Invention. { The Sound-Writer, Which Is Also the Sound-Producer. What the Phonograph Is, What It Does, and the Manner ot Its Doing. With Some inis Regarding the Practical and’ Impractical Uses fo Which 1t Hay Le Put. From Our Own Correspondent. New York, March 7.=The telephone busi- Dess is a prosperous one, if its extension may be jtdeed from that of the Telephone Company's oflices. Starting with a single room, the Com- pany now has three rooms, and is trying to ab- sorb a fourth, which will make a suite embrac- ing nearly an entire floor of the Tribune Build- {uer that Horace Greeley did not found. The telephone business, by the way, now appears in the aspect of amwonopoly. If the invention is 0 become a necessity and facllity of communi- cation only second to that of the telegraph, there are willious in it; and these millions the Com- ‘pany proposes to realize for jtsell and its heirs o judefivite time. For instance, if you wish a telephone-board put into your office or clse- where, it will be put inand taken care of by the Company at so much rental a year, just as the patent telegrapl-writers are. The instru- ments cannot be bought at any price. Thus the Company retains its hold, with apatent that shuts out rival inventors, andthe first right toa ficld of decided promise for the future. Where srrangements are not already effected, it is probable they svon will be, for the establish- ment of brauch ageneies in other citics, in fact in ail places where the telephoue can be sue- cessfully introduced for Dbusiness purpos The Company bere has alrcady something like forty lines in operation. What eslled my attention to the matter, how- ever, was not the telephone, but THE PHONOGRAPH, 2 new invention which the Company is display- ing, and an additional reson for wishing to ab- sorb thie Jourth room. It was throush happen- ing to be in this room, which is not yet absorb- ed, that I learned of the process by which spoken words are literally stored away in tin- toil or steel plates, to be reproduced at pleasure with the tone, inflection, ana empbasis of the speaker all perfectly preserved. The first inti- watiou Was in the shape of a man sonorously singing the ballad of the three biack crows, and singing it both for cause and with caws. This was followed by the stors of Mary and her lamb, vizorously declaimed as if at an imaginary and suffering audience. Then, afteramoment of tilence, there camea repetition, only by nomeaus soloud. The whole was curious enough tocall for investization, beyond the fact announced by the occupant of the unabsorbed roum that “This was the phonograph busivess, and,in con- nection with the constaut shouting, was enough 1o drive an honest man crazy.™ Inthe next room were found a group of lacics and gentlemen zathered around a table 8t which was seated the balladist and declaimer, and upon which was placed his echo, or the in: strument,_called the phonozraph,—the sound- writer. This instrument was not at all compli- cated in appearance. The principle inzeniously worked out by the invenior, Mr. Tuomas Edison, widely known for bhis inventions in connection with telegraphy, was bound up and bhidden away ina littie disc not larger than an ordimary watch. Yet there was much in it, aside frow an interesting exposition of the wave theory of sound. . WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. A plain standard supports a rod perhaps two and a balf 1eet long, witha balauce-wheel at one cend and a crank at the other. Midway between whee!l and rod is a brass cylinder, with a run- ning grove of finely cut lines. An arm swinging in frontof the cylinder holds the phonozraph. This consists simply of a thin plate of metal, like thai used by photog. raphers, setin a rubber mouthpicee. A del cate steel needle, with ends not pointed, but blunt like those of a screwdriver, toucles the late with one extremity, and is brought to bear izhtly upon the grooved cylinder with the oth- cr. The balance of tais needle is exquisitely fine, 50 that it responds 1o the slightest vibru- tion. Now, the cylinder is covered with a sheet of tin-foil, and the phonograph, adjusted care- Tully in relation to the foil recording-sheet, is ready to be talked to. The volume of sound re- ‘produced is in airect ratio to that of theoriginal speaker, and the laws of sound as to bass and soprano clearness are fully manifested. It is desirable tnat the exaibitor possess good lungs and a dean tone, though the phonograph is sure 1 bring out whatever is contided to it, not hes- itating to crow, whistle, sing, or shrick. Turning Lhe crank with such uniformity as practice has taught him, the operator puts his mouth to the rubber, aud pours whatever of wit or fancy his brain and mewmory yield Lim into the receiver. FOLLOWING TIE VIBEATION of the plate, the reedic dances up and down, Jutung the tin-foll with points so delicate that te of them are almost beyoud microscopic scorery. Others, where the sound was po- culiarly strong, are pricked quite plainly through La “Theu the needle is removed, the der is reversed till tne beginning of the con: sation rests beneath the point, a common tin re- sotnding-tube is fastened to the disc, and it is the turn of the phonoiraph to talk. - The crank s 1moved as before, and the contents of the foil sheet are faithfully delivered back to their originator, With a tone somewhat metallic and ventriloguistic, but with no loss of inticetion or intensity. The effect upon listeners may be imagined. Oneeffect is 10 drawa throng of them from norning till night. A gentleman standing near me remarked that the invention of such a machine 100 years ago would have cost the inventor s head, aud, indeed, perhiaps it would, since human iogenuity was then consid- cred by many 1o be altogether too ingenious and profaue. - theory of the reproduction is, of course, &5 plain and simple 25 that of the recording ; but the wonder of it remains nevertheless Wien the ncedle-point is run over the groov S by catehmge in thie gelicate indentations which Were previously made by it, it causes a vibration of the wetad plate corresponding exactly to that produced by the waves of sound, tuougt more feeble. = TOE WORDS COME BACK as full and clear 25 they were given to it, save the medium reduction in power. s of Tubber are emyloyed to prevent too rapid vivra- tion. By turning the crank slowly enousl, the «atehing of the ucedle may be detected. As the sounds of words are merely variations of vibration, the phonozraph necdle is as capable as the human throat to produce the requisite variations. lue austruments now cxbibited are them- selves experiments, and by no means what My, Edison proposes to show s the compicte product of his ides. The idea was pre. seuted to him by his cxperiments with i telephone, which bas a mouthpicee and needle similar to those of the phonowruph. His Bnger happening to rest on thie telephone nee dle, he fert it pricking him with o ideradle foree. 1t at once vezurred to im that, if the vivrations were Torcible euoush to make inder tacions on a metal surface, sounds and spee couid be recorded and preserved. His efforts :‘:‘Qm :l;l:l"l.;led l\\'llh an almast unexpected suc- sess, al e plionorraph appear: marvels of this inventive s, 2 B¢ Of the + Mr. Edisou is now eneared in butlds - fected instrument ac his factory at ,\lex’:’:fi ?’.!.‘flf N.J. Electrotyne plates woutd 1 "requent usage: Pl utd atlow long and _ PRACTICAL AND TMPRACTICAL USES. Thus 1t would seem that the caricature in Thunch in comieetion with Queen Vietoriavs fu serest in the telephone was also something pf 5 aropheey. The picture represented stel; com- sartments, in which were stowed away bottles 3lled with all sKinds of operatic music, and cor, rectly Jabeled as to both aria and prima dony The propricter, who keps this cellar along with ibat of hiswines, was in contemplation respect- ‘nr what operatic treat he should uncork at the sinner’s end. liaviog at Lis hand all the first- slass performauces. 'Now, the phonograph does 2ot buttle music, but its iovéntor clanns that it records it with perfect accuracy, just as it does specch. Hence, if a priwa douna sivg iuto the receiver with full volume, and the steel plate be taken from the foil proof, the music will have a permanent power of rep: ion, or a perma- Dnent possibility 1o be reproduced by the phono- graph. OI course, to prevent flats, sharps, and unfortunate naturals, the eylinder must be re- volved at precisely the same rate of speed in producing as it was in tbe orizinal taking of the impression. The sligitest devia: tion in this regard would inyolve utter ruin of effeet, aud would result in suchdiscord as not infrequently #cts the better of some of our the- atrical orchestras. To male sure of proper ro- tation, itis proposed to run the cylinder by machinery as delicate and accurate as that of the finest’ clocks. The capaity of the phono- grapl’s voice being called in question, Mr. Edison eaid he bad already, by meaus of proper resounding apparatus, made an_audience of 1,500 persons distinetly and satisfactorily hear the phonographic utterances. A FANCIFUL PROJECT. Headded that one of the Kiralfy brothers, sceing the money in a decided novelty, had made 2 proposition to seud an azent to Europe with 1 perfected instrument, for the purpose of obtaining operatic music-plates. It was the idea to have the agent engawe all the chief art- ists in Europe to sivg into the phouograph their favorite solos. When toe colicction was com- pleted, American audiences could eujoy hearing, in concert, through this triumpli of buman in- genuity, the fincst singers in the world, many of whom never have or will get to our shores. Kicalfy was_ enthusiastic respecting the enter- prise, and there was littie auestion of its under- taking. 1 Aside from this somewhat fanciful idea and proposition, I thiuk the inventor and exhibitors of the phonozraph are not quite clear in their own minds as to what practical uses and advan- tage the invention can be made to serve. That is au after-thought. Among the ideas so fur expressed is one that the phonograph can be put ivto clocks and made to announce the hour and other divisious of time in any grade of voice desired. This fs very suggestive, and has in 1t the werms of popularily, What a charming ift for a lover,—a clock it would tell his adored the hour in his_own tender tones! Or for a husband who could thus leave Lis voice bebind lim to recularly speak for him during bis abscuce! Thy IMPEESSIVE CIEANGES . conld be inserted,—as, for instance, the wife could arrange for the counting-ho 50 em- phatic a note of Warning that the dmer-hour woula not often pass unheeded or with a late comer. And there would be iniiite room for the production of clocks waggish. clocks moral, clocks attuned to_music, ', or {0 prose. Angther idea is that of manufacturing speaking dolls, possessing varied vocaburaric Basuful vouns men, of cuurse, will at once sce the use to which they could tarn the phono- eraph. There need wardness in the matter of popzinz the question when the party who finds it ipossible to speai can hire a plionograph and Jeav it witih 2 fair one, to plead his cause in his own_impassioned style, wien he shall have abaudoned the drooping gate and be safely at home. There is utility cnougu in the jovention, no doubt of that, and time only is required to snow how much tue world biis needed aud felt the lack of just such a preserver and reproducer of speech. Busi- ness and professioual men could use it in place of a stenographer, talking their afairs into its ready ear, for the later service of the private secrétary. Wills could be told to it. and in copperplate Tetain the purposvs of the maker till the Surrogate ghould commund._ the will- plate to be put on the cylinder, and the pre- served voice of the deceased to speak for hun. And, 0 ciose with a suitably Serivus sugwes tion, certaiu Jadics might fIf the phonograph with gossip, and send it to the sewing sovicty to represent them waen they were unavoidably detained. .
