THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: ——————— SUNDAY. DECEMBER 16, "877—SIXTEEN PAGES. THE HUBBITES. - How They Enjoyed Their Second Day in Chicago. A Visit to the Stock-Yards and the Packing-Houses, supplemented by a Tour Through a Dusty Elevator. The gentlemen composing the Boston Commer- sl Club, visitinz his city, saw something vester- of Chicago and her great industries, which im- reeed upon them the fact toat this city is the + metropolis of the West, and destined to be- o the grest centre of internal commerce for the Chtle United Statex. The elesators, hog-Kiliing, i live-¢tock interests in general, received atten- i yesterdsy. Fortunately for the Boston Seapte, they came liere during a delightful epell of P tner, after & ceasun of rain and general dfs- eesblenese, and thus greater facilitics have been $ordea them to enjoy themselves and the hospi- My tendered them by oar represcntative Gizeps and merchants. Besides the Bos- fon Commercial Club. there were with the panty Cisrles P. Koliozs, J. W. Doane, Murry Kateon, George Clarke, . 3. McFarland, John B. Dre, Ald. Sprague. “\e will be noticed by the the above Jist of well- Joown names, Chicazo was represented by nearly every business which has a footbold in this city. o by its Jeading men. With such a company of solid buslness men, the Boston gentiemen could aothelp but feel that they had been met upon ‘eus! sround. and a more enjoyable, dignified, yet thoronghly eocial party could nor have been gotten tozeiber anywhere. It scemed as though every amangement bad been tested and perfected veforeband, and, therefore, eerstbing,_puseed of without the least Far or slishtest anposance, This, in a great Etteare, was du to the liberality of tne Chica- 7o, Burlington & Quincy Raiirond Compans, and §itown Commiltee of Arranzements, each mem- ferof which did his best to make their zuests hap- y snd comfortable. Messrs. Rellogz, Doane, cCanly, Nelson, McFarland, and Clarke seemed everywhere, and they always tarned up at the right time. THOE START WAS MADE srom the Grand Pucific Hotel at §:40 in the morn- ing. Carriages were in waiting at she door, and the party was driven 10 the foot of Lake street, ‘where 8 &pecial train of three of the Chicago, Bur- Foston & Quincs cara was in waiung. They Sere of the Company's best, and there was plenty of room for eversbody. Mr. d. M. Walker. Generol Solicitor_of the road, had the guests in harre, and he was assisied by Frank Knight. erd-Master, and J. Rnapp, conductor, who had charze of thé train. The guests had the cars under zhert fall control. to g0 where they chose, and the engine was in charge of Frank Piesen. one of the bect enzincers on the line, who knew how to man- sce the throttle. At 10 o'clack precisery the train Farted routhward, and abont’ tweny minutes siter was on a fiding at Armaur, Dole & Co. ¢ ele- Sator, Twentieth ana Brown streets. This being fhe larzest_elevator in the United States, the vis- Jtors were given 3 full oppartunity of judging how Qquickly cars of grain can be Joaded and tuloaded Shthis city. The capucity of this grain-honse is 1,730,000 bushels. Just as the party arrived ¥train of twentv empty cars putled out, which had just_been unloaded, and, a2 £0on a3 the visltors ere within. a train of twenty cars loaded witn whestwas backed in. There arc twenty receiving- ‘hopoers and twenty scales upon cach of the tracks, 2nd it took about three and u balf minutes 1o un- Josd all the cars. The visitars were carried 10 the 10pfoor and shown the recciving and weighing ‘Toopers, esch of which hetd a car-load. They were al€0 shown_the moaus operandi of changinz bins to prevent heating, and also how grain was Fraded. The immense lumber piles surprised them sll. snd one enthusiastic zentleman re- ‘marked that there was lumoer enouzh down there inzle the whole creation. The varions pub- linz= thronchout the city were noted, and the West Side Pomping-Works pointed out and explained. The visit bere somewhat covered the Fentlemen with dust, bat they were very well sat- isfied with what they had ecn. and aza n reiterated 1kat Chicago never aid anvthinz by halvex. AsMr. Lesnder McCormies was along, the Bos- tfonizns coul& not do beiter than visit the famous ‘mammoth reaper factory. ana thus, when the purty Teft the clevator, they were taken 10 the reapcr works, The tram was sided and backed into the vard nnd ulongside tae freicht-platform of the factors. €0 that the entlemen had onl¥ to ftep aown and out. The mapufacture of movinz and reapinz-machines was shown in all its cetaily, and the foundry and blacksmith-shiop eeswed to aturact the greatest intercst. Having seen this, and thanked Mr. McCormick for his courtesy, the party azuin boarded the train and STARTED FOR THE PACKING-TOUSE of Mesgrs. Armour & Co., at_the west eide of the Stock-Yards. This time, alxo, the train was brunhi to the door and the party alishted, They went torouch the mammoth bullding. and finally landed on the top floor where the kiflinx is done. Some of the gentlemen exzmined minutely inta the details of the pa ‘business, and they were astounded at its provorticns. The auality of the pork also struck the gentlemen as being very superior to that ra sed in the Enst upon €will and under barns and in littie pens. The making of sausazes and faysaze- casings ther alfo looked into. but. thongh it was remarkavly neat and clean, it spoiled their appe- tite for park and beans and fried "sansaze for some time to cmne. 'The members of the Commercial Club were then left to themselves until 8 o'clock Jast evening. when the Chicazo Cub tendered them a Drivate reception at the beautifal Club-Honse on Monroe street opposite the Palmer House, The affair, although in fuil evening dress, was rather of un Impromptu character, and the members of the two Clubs were ziven a chunce to become ac- quated with cach other. A collation was served, but no other exercises took place. Thie morning, by invitution, the Commercial Club will attend services at_Unity Church and listen to a sermon by the Rev. Robert Collycr. As s00m as cables are laid giving telezrapblc con- nections between new points, an opportunity is af- forded for_determining the longitude of the sta- tions. This is by far the simplest and most accu- rate methoa of determining longitudes that has ever been invented. All halis necessary is to have correct Jocal time at each station. and to note thetime accurately when the sienals are sent, The differance of Jocal times iy practically the differ- ence of Jonzitude. Thereisn emaliloss of time 1 the transmission of the siznals, but the error that this might occasion is enurely’ eliminated by sending siznals both ways over the wire, and com- puting from a pair of eiznals, The ‘sudsmurine cables with the West India Islands have been re- cently employed for this purpose. and several longitades of Tocalitics in Trinidad and Garbados nscertained. The Jongitude of the etations is thus determined within five yards, equalto the hun- dredth part of a second of time.
