WasurNGrox, D C Dec. 15.—The Gordon~ without a duel, hington who know the affair came vers near baving n serivus ter- mination. It seems fmpossible to believe it. but, unless those who should be best inturmed aro mistaken, the National Capital Las only-cscaped a seenc which would have carried us to the duys of the chivalry. Inasiauch as the cause of the difference orizinated in sceret sessfon, the proceediags of which Senators, by their pladio of honor, are not permittea to divulee, thers can bs mo authoritative statement of the cause of the diffienlty, bhut it is well ascertained, and not. denied by the prin- cipal actors, that the statement in these dis- patches last night represented in substaace THE ACTUAL OCCURKENCE. Careful inquiry to-day shows that the affair did not possess those extra Senatorial features which have been ibed to it in many quar ters. There are dif nees as to the exact na- ture of the provocation. Some say that Senator Gordon answered that be would settle the dif- ficulty in the Senate Chamber or elsewhere, and. £aid this in an offensive and excited tone. Sev- eral Senators say to-day, however, that Gordon, inafone somewhat under his breath, siwply said that ** We will settle it, at nll events.” Senator Gordon and his fricads consider that an affront had been put upon that Senator, and that, unless what/tbey call reparation due to a gentleman should be made, a resort would be bad 70 THE CODE, unless it should be discovered that Seuator Conkling would not recognize the revival of that monstrous system, and wonld turn the chal- lenger over to the Police Court. Negotiatlons were on foot late list night. Every- thing was verv secret, but tne following is 8 resume of the current gos- sip: Scnator Gordon was closeted at his hotel during the entire evening with Sena- tor Lamar and other personal friends. It wasa serious matter with them. There was no vapor of swagger or play of pistol about it. Senator Gordou is a man of metal, bred in the Southern schiool of houor, and it now scems probable would have been very likely to bave SENT A CHALLENGE. Senator Conkl meanwhile, at nis hotel, was also engaged with frieuds, among whom are reported to have been Senator Jones, of Ne- vada, an intimate personal friend, and Gen. Phil Sheridan, as mwilitary expert, to- eether with one or two Soutbern gen- tlemen friendly both to Conklinz and Gordon, and faniliar with the rules and eti- quette which govern the code. This consulta- tion, of course, was considered as the most con- fitlential, but it is reported that to one of the Southern gentlemen Senator Conkling sald that he did not believe in the accursed system of duels or anyof the barbarisms associated with slave institutions, but that he bad made it 4 principle if he had put an affront upon a man he should meet that man and answer him upon his own ground Senator Conkling is said to have caused it distinctly to be known that he would SIGN NO WRITTEN ACCEPTANCE of any challenge, but that whatever obligations his friends might determine that the circum- stances placed upon him he should, ss a wan, meet. This communication to these Southern gentlemen was evidently satisfactory, and was doubtless communicated to Senator Gordon, or to Senator Lamar, who acted as Gen. Gordon’s confidentfal friend and adviser. The position of Conkling was understood by the Gordou side to be tnat, protesting against the barbarism of of duels, he (Conkling), if needs be, was not the man to shrink from avy respousibilities which bis words had brought upon him, und that he would nmot avail himself of apby technicality, or, should any communication be wmade to him turn the sender or the bringer of the message over to the ministers of crfminal justice. ‘The rumor circulated quite freely here to-day that Conkling soueht the course of quarrel To SECURE A CHALLENGE and turn the challenger over to justice, most certainly had no foundation. Mr, Conkling’s fricnds claim for bim that, however men may differ from him politically, all must consider him a man of courazre and of honor. Meantime, Senators Lamar and Gordon are represented to bave decided apon thelr course, sod Lamar is reported to have called upon Senator Conkling, althougk this is denied, end to have handea a communi- cation said to be couched in the languaze of the code. It undoubtedly resembled a preliminary cartel; but its existence fs denied. It was not a challenge technically or legally, but it was a private note stating that Scoator Gordon felt himself agerieved; that he could not atlow the matter to stop there, and that be felt it neces- sary to ASK SOME REPARATION. ‘The communication was not o challenze, nor was it intended as such, but it evidently was f{ntended a8 the forerunnmer of 2 possible chalienge. This morning there were the wildest rumors that Senator Gordon had sent a note to Copklinz telling him he was be- yond the District, ready to meet him ata cer- tain place. The report was unfounded. It it certain that Gordon was in the Senate Cham- Ler, as was Coukl This morning the friends of both parties sought to effect o com- promise, and Senators Hamlin and Howe, rep- - A A S
