AN INVOLVED QUESTION ON THE LIABILITY OF THE STOCKHOLDERS. The stockholders of the defunct Republic Life-Insurance Compauy have been enjoying quitc 5 season of rest, though doubtless them have been expecting a summons to wmake up . the little deficieucy of 75 or 80 per cent in the assets of the corporation. That summons came yester- day in the shape of a petition by the Receiver, 8. . Ward, agaiust them, to enforce thefr lin- bility. From the petition it appears that the Yiabilitics of the Company are about $1,038,- 037.20, exclusive of contested claims. The as- sets on haud will not more than 20 or 2 ver cent of these clsims. . Daly last Monday evening, and referred to the Committee, inguir- ing by what right the Baltimore & Ohbio Rail- rond Company, Ficld, Leiter & Co., and the Ex- position Association occupy a part of the Lake- Front. Mr. Reynolds explaioed that the Expo- sition people occupicd the space devoted to the Exposition Buildmg by and with the consent of the Board of Public Works, and _that the rail- rond people nd Ficld, Leiter & Co. were there by sutferance of the Exposition Association. Mr. Reynolds was further asked about the organization of the Assocjation, the amount of stock subscribed, profits, etc., and in_reply he went intoa full explanation of those mat. ters; stating that the stockholders, instead of having made a great deal of moncey, as some of the Committee evidently thought they bad, were now recelving 8 @ per cent_dividend—the first ever declared. Mr. Reynolds stated, forthe Board of Directors and Exceutive Committee of the Association, that there was o desire on the partof those gentiemen to dictate to the city authorities in this matter of leasivg the building toprivate parties. ‘They were there by sufler- ance, but the authority iu the matter wasin the hands of the IR LD, THOMPSON recarded the Field & Leiter store in the Expo- sition ilding as a sort of public matter,— something which indircetly bencfited Chicago. Whetber, however, there was aiy necessity for their going there instead of some other place, was a question which he was not prepared to answer. The Alderman did not look on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s depot as such a public benefit. . vnolds sald the Exposition people were led o believe that Ficld & Leiter were unable to seenre quarters where. explained that there were other ) the firin could have raken. Peter Page, for instance, had offered them his block on Wabash avenue, but the offer had ot becn aceepted. Atr. Reynolds added that Field & Leiter were there through virtue of o tnemorandum agroe- ment in which the Exposition manazers gave their consent to the oceupation of the building. Ald. Gilbert thought, inasmuch as the firm were there, that the Council had best take o action jn the matter, but let the thing run on with the understanding that the Exposition people were to make o further leases. In his opinion, the people of Chicuro were uot at all{n favor of ousting Field & Leiter. Ald. Thompson expressed it s his_opinion that an intimationshould be given the Exposition managers that the raitroad people should seck otheryuarters, and that Field & Leiter’s occupan- cy of the building be made as short as possible. That firm had goue toan cxpense of about $25,000in ftting up the building, and it was unjust to make them luse that amount. ALD. DALY £aid that was not the object of his resolution. He was ot in favor of turning them out into the street, or anvthing of that Kind, but he wus in fuvor of their dolug just what every otber merchant in Chicago wes doing,—paying taxes to the city. In his opinfon, and he put it in the form of a motion, the railroad people aud Field & Leiter should hand over the rent Lo the city. Ald. Thompson thousbt the city owed the Exvosition people a debt of gratitude, and that 1t would look like spite in the ity to now clamp down on thew. Ald. Gilbert moved as an amendment that all the moneys hereafter received from lessees of the Exposition Building be paid over to the city. Ald. Thompson and Ald. Cook thought the railroud people ought to be notifizd to vacate the buflding. They were not so sure that the city hud a lowal right to colleet the rents. 1d. Thompson proposed os a substitute that the Committee recommend that the Exposition eople be notifled to request the Baltimore & hio Railroad Company to remove thelr depot at their earliest eonvetience; that the occupas tion of the building by Field & Lefter should be made as sbort as circamstances will permlt, not to extend beyond the Ist of May next; and that, wencrally, the Ixposition people be notified that the use of the building hereafter by private firms for private purposes will not be fuvored. » The substitute was adovted. Ald. Daly stated privately that he should 1nake & minority report recommending that the railroad peoplé and Field & Leiter pay over their rents to the city, aud that thes be notified to vacate the buildinz 4s soon 1s convenieot.
