6 THE CHICAGO AUGUST 1877, i, FENANCE AND TRADE. New York Exchange Firmeres= Clearings, $3,300,000. The Produce Markets Quist, and Generally Bteady—Provisions Dull and Easior, Grain Firmer, but Closed Easy—Fair Recelpts and Large Shipments—-Novement from the Seaboard, FINANCIAL. The demand for bank accommodations is not prearing, $f only dealrable customers arc taken Sntoacconnt, The banks rofuse a large portion of the paper brought them. They havo adopted, a very conservative policy in view of the probalite activity of the fall money market, and will take only tho very beet paper, Country bankearo eend- ing in paper for reditcount, hnt not In large amounts, The banks have not yet recovered the Joanable means they held before the strike, bnt have more than enongh to mect all lnc applications they care to entertain, Rates of discount were 8410 per cent at the banks to regular customers. Call loans were G per cent. ‘New York exchange was sold between banks at Oc per $1,000 treminm, ‘There was e moderate number of orders from the country for currency. ‘Tha clearines were $3,200,000. THE FINANCIAL FUTURE. ‘The tmpreseion ts almost universal among benk- cra that the loan market will bo active and etrin- kent thia fall. The probabilities of an extraor- dinary grain movement are the basis for this ex- pectation, bat the condition of the reserves of the New York banks gives it additional ground. The Now York banks huld, besides their own reserves, the reserves of the banks of the interior cities, which in thelr turn hold the reserves of the coun- try banks. When the crops begin to move cor- rency flows steadily ontward from New York to Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louts, Kansas City, and other distributing points, and from them to every wayslde station in the great grain producing States whero the farm- crs can sell theft grain. There fs a limit to this movement. It murt not deplcte the re- rerve the banks are required to keep against thelr deposits, Lant year the legal-tender average fell from $50, 524, 400 to $14,076, 100 hetween duly 20 and Dee. ‘This caused tho Irgal tendera to drop considerably below the requisite reserves, but the deficit waa fortunately made good by anin- creaxe in the specie on hand from $19,285,200 to $53,041,700. The New York banks now hold but $10,013,075 more legal tenders and specie than needed to make good thein reserves, Lart year the excess was $22,801,325; the year Ucfore, $28,504,675. Evidently, 1 the crop movement this year drawa ont — the. fame ne last year, $24,548,900, it will compel the banks to callin loans to the amount, of millions, at the cost uf great stringency, unicrs the epecte accumulations mount up, as happened last year. The present indications ara not un- favorable to anch an accumulation of specie, For- elgn exchange {s low, bpt Ifthe war should extend in Europe it would rise, and the corrent of apecte set the other way, Secretary Sherman's policy of hoarding gold I# indirect opposition tothe {nter- este of the banks In vo faraa lt will make lt more dificult for them to obtain the metat, CURRENCY CHANGES TO AUG, 1, ‘The Comptroller of the Currency has fesued hia monthly report, bringing fhe statistics of changes in the currency down to Aug. 1.
