I6 THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE: SUNDAY. MAY ‘27, 1877-SIXTEEN PAGES. fall of interest, which results inevitably in good humor, and isa necded relief after the view of bloodshed given in the Vernet, a powerful as it 4s an aupleasant piece. From the soldiers who are firing and felling the eye turns to one of the merricst of German merry-makings. There is astudy inevery feature of the large canvas, from the geese who lead the way with open- monthed wonder, to the boys turning hand- springs in the exuberance of their joy. The. rustic procession is a complete antidote for the blues. The musicians are not mere players for others, but the partners in the fun, brimming oyer with ft. Three healthy, jolly maids appre- ciate their position as second only to the music, ana behind these comes a whole host of cheer in himself, THE PATNER OF HIS COMPANY, with the small beer-keg on his shoulder. Bat yet surpassing all is the trio, the proud village swain witha maid on either arm. His head high and his eye beaming, but not this holds you. Nor is it'the happy and unconscious look of the nearer Inss. it is the other irl who looks up at William with an admiration and wonder which in our language can only be ex- pressed by * O law!” ‘There are three Troyons in the collection, “Cattle Grazing,” Cattle Drinking,” and “The Water-Cart,” the latter a particularly fine piece. From these the connoisseur turns to the two Schreyers, ‘The Halting Pisce,” and “4 Wallachian Team,” both in the artist’s best etyle; and to the mystic landscape of Daubicny. Meissonier is represented by “The Chess Players,” a gem in painting. “The Good NEW YORK. Mr. August Belmont’s Oil- Treasures. ificent Gallery Opened for a Charitable Object. Tnese names alone, in the absence of detail, serve well to in- dicate the pleasure to be derived from such op- portunity as the present. The $1 paid for ad- mission not only goes toenlarge the measure of g noble charity, but js well spent in any case. THE PLACE OF DISTINCTION, 60 far as sucha place could be made in sucha company, is given the artist J. Beaufain Irving, whose sudden death left a wife and eight young children with but scanty means of support. Six of his paintings, aside from the two owned by Mr. Belmont, are placed on casels or hung. “Among them is the “Scene from. Richelieu,” painted at the order of the Hon. Leland Stan- ford, of California, and most fortunately fin- ished afew days before the artist's death, thus securing $5,000 toward an inheritance. The scene is that startlingly dramatic one, not to be forgotten by'any who have witnessed it, where Richelicu rises to the words: “Mark where she stands—around her form I draw the awful circle of our solemn Church. Set but afoot within that holy ground and on thy head, yea though it wore a crown, Ilaunch the curse of Rome!” ‘The expression of the moment is admirably caught. The eyes of the Cardinal blaze with ire and indignation, his attitude is full of power. Nor was the artist Jess happy in portraying: the expression of dread and baffled purpose,—the not esvape notice that Mr. Belmow has e bought mostly ot foreign artists. The exce] tions are Eastman Johnson's “ Picture Boo! Bierstadt’s “ Burning Ship,” ‘¢ The Shipwree! of DeHaas, and the irvings already mentioned. THE CHILDREN'S DAY in Brooklyn, ur in other words. the anniversary of the Brooklyn Sunday-School Union, is worthy more extended notice than the telegraph gave it. Fifty thousand children in procession is a sight not_common, and was never seen before even in Brooklyn, though these anniversary processions and services have been a feature of May over there for many years. It was considerably more of a day for the youngsters than Fourth of July The strects along the line of march were gay with flags and crowded with spectators. But the pro- cession itself eclipsed all other display. ‘fhe panners of the schools were added to by the banners of the classes, and the rich colors of these set off to striking advautage the hundreda ot white-dressed children. More than 150 Sundsy-schols had part in the celebration, Piymouth and its branches making the largest showing. There were seven gathering places in convenient parts of the city, and a parade division to each. After the march the children were all given lunch at these poiuts of reudez- yous, thus ending the day in the most interest- ing manner. One of the was that which took place at Prospect Park. The Sunday-school of the Lafayette Avenue Congregational Church (Dr. Cuyler’s) came upon the grounds in the morning and spent the whole day in the groves and upon Long Meadow, making use of a large tent which had been erect ed for their accommodation. Before 2 o'clock came the other schools of this division and gath- ered ina grove on the common. On the stand sat Dr. Cuyler, Mr. Talmage, and other cleryy~ men and officers of the division. Two tull bands furnished music, accompanied by Mr. Arbuckle on his cornet. The scats of the chil- most interesting of the parades will to do checked by the fear ofdoing,—or that | Gren were s0 ui in the natural of confidence in the sweet face of the protected { amphitheatre of the place as to lady. The figures are posed effectively. The | produce a most beautiful effect when they were filled. From the temporary stand to the very top of the hill on three sides one could see a bright confusion of fluttering pink and blue and white; of bright eyes and fans, There were the usual exercises of music, of prayer, reading, very short speeches and the benediction —nothing tedious—and the whole. lasting only about half an hour. The procession of the schools then formed and marched out upon the Jong meadow, Marching four in depth and in close file the lines extended ucatly four times across thecommon. More than_ 1,500-scholars were under the banners.of Mr, Talmage’s Tab- ernacle, and fully 12,000 were in this division, which included nineteen echools. ‘This much of detail will give an fdea of the day, which is looked forward to by the Brook- lyn cnildren more eagerly than picnic day or Christmas-tree time is by those who have no suchspecial and grand occasion. THE GAME OF DRAUGHTS. Communications intended for this Department background shows a lofty flicbt of steps bor- dered with trees, a fountain playing in the ex- treme distance. As a whole the work is pre- efsely of the kind Mr. Irving delighted in, and well represents him, though not so finished as his “Cardinal Wolsey and Friends,” nor so pleasing as the pehiee pieces, such as “The Cock-Fight,” or “The visputed Trick.* In all these the same peculiarities appear. They are bright and striking. The eye is attracted to them at once by the dash of color. It might almost be said that Mr. Irving could not paint a picture without introducing A FIGURE IN CARDINAL. In “The Cock-Fight,” for fnstance, though a small bit of ‘canvas is covered, two of. these fig- ures are at hand. The place isa monastery garden, and in the wall-doorway stands one of these holy men in scarict, holding aboye him a Blue umbrella. to protect head and baek from the sun, while he watches with the same keen enjoyment a3 his two churchly companions the desperate conflict of the cocks.
