RELIGIOUS. ' METRODIST MINISTERS. The Methodiet ministers held their weekly meet- & No. 57 Weshington street yesterday morn- dug. Elder Jutkins presiding. After the ueal relizious exercies, which were 8dby Mr. Boring, the discassion of the topic, How Shall We Best Utilize Our Church Forces for Christian Work? " was resumed. Mr. Mareh eaid three suggertions had been thrown ©ut,—personal eupervision, the epirit of the work, 2od the aystem laid down in the Discipline. The It didnot eattsfy him. since it seemed to be al- Zogether impracticable. He did not cee how thes, 3¢ minieters, could go to this ome and that “9¢, and say, Come here or go there, or, Do this ordothat " He believed in a division of labor. one thing essential was the epirit of the work. That mugt bo had before anything could be dome. They needed fire fn ihem. The Diccipline, to his d, presented a_perdect e5stem to accomplish he- work, but the committces appointed were Terely nominsl. Outside helps were depended up- ©n 100 ‘much. While he would not have the _fl"“’ changed, they came togesher too much to Bave s good time, and mot for segressive work. ‘There was ample machinery in the Discipline for Suceess 1f 1t was only naed aright. 2 Mr. Willing thonght there was great need of per- souai visitation. As to gencral church work, the pastor, in his measure of love, and faith, and work, was the peneral measure of success. The people would follow the pastor. Mr. Boring thonzht the beat way touse the forces wae to use them. He took it to be their business 28 Mcthodist ministers to carry out the provisions of the book in_which ‘the machinery was to be found. God furnished the power. They ought to do as their futhers did. He deprccated the substi- tution of choirs for congregational singing, and of **wishy-washy staff * for the grand old hymns. Mr. Adams took issne with Mr. Marsh on the Emnt that the classes were Loo much concerned in aving a good time. He believed the good time was the secret of the work. The work must have a religious impulee. ' Tis observation taught him that the good effect was Inyersely to the amaunt of «inging upon the work during the meetings. They should'be clothed * with spirituality, Krom this came power, and work was the scquel. The way to utilize the forces was to increase them by grace. Secure the forces and then utilize them, Dr. Harricon, of Atlunta, Ga., nlso spoke in favor of congrepational singing. He had fought choirs, and would fight them as Jongas he was able totalk. Jobn C. Cathoun had said that the Dis- cipline was the grandest vystem of church govern- ment ever mnclosed within a single yolume. What ‘was nceded wus not more machinery or less, or a tinkering of whiat they had, but persousl consecra- tion of the ministry 1o the work. In the-citics, ministers developed the lterary side in order to draw congregutions, —often, he was afraid, to the neglect of spiritual communion of the heart witt God. They didnot pray often enough or long enonghi before they went futo the palpit. The grundest instramentality in church work was not Zenius, but the holicst man was the most efficient. Power' was lost by dividing themselves up into pieces, and retailing the parts to the masses. The power should be kept for the palpit. With the Spirit of Christ there with them, God would blcss their work, Mr. McChesney euggested for the next subject “Personal Visitation. " This was agreed to. Elder Jutkins annonnced that Dr. Harrison would epeak in Trinity Church, inIndiana avenue, near Twenty-fourth street, this evening, The ministers were then dismissed wiih the ben- ediction. THE UNION PARK CHURCH. ‘Theannual renting of pews in the Union Park Congregational Church occurred lust evening, and was very euccessful in o financial point of view, and brought out a large number of the regular at- tendants at that handsome place of worship. The bidding for cholce of sittings was noro animated than on former similar occasions, and the amount of money produced therefrom much larger. This state of things was duc mainly lo the popularity of the pastor, the Rev. D. N. Vandeveer. The chnrch-edifice, which 15 &0 well located and as fine 3 gue s any i the clty, lias seating capacity for 2,250 persona, ond the kittings have hereiofore ‘brought $12, 000, : The bids for_choice of pews ranged as follows: Four pews at $30 cach, one at §35, four at $25, one at £20, two at $15, cleven at $10, twenty-one ut $5, one at$4, thirteen at $2.50, anda large number of others at $1 and §2 each. None of the seats in the G per year and ‘gallery were told. The amount realized from premiums was SSU0. 'The terms of the eale were the premium und a quarter's rent in advance Mr. Thad Desn conducted the sale in & business- like aid good-humored manner. A pood many ladies were present, and they were consulted u great deal in the selection of pews. The sale commenced at 8 o'clock and closed at 10. MISCELLANEOUS.
