SR The shove map will furnish the reader with a very clear ides of the disposition of the Russian Sorces in Roumanin and Asia Minor.. The head-- quarters of the Army of the Danube were origi- nally at Kischenev, which is on the railroad line leading from Odessa to Jassy, Capital of the Province of Moldavia, and about midway be- tween the Dnlester and the Pruth Rivers, but the base bas since been established at Jassy, which is in easy raflroad communication with Russis, and from which a railrond and two or three good public roads run down to Galatz, on the north bsnk of the Danabe, not far from its mouth. The army crossed the Pruth at ! three points between Jassy and Galatz, and has swung into position between Ismail and Braila, threatening to cross at this point Into the Dobrudschs, a districk in the extreme northeastern part of Bulgaria. The only avail- able crossing-places "gbove on the Bulgarian frontier arc' at Sfistria, Rutschuk, Sistova, and ‘Totrokan; but all of these are commanded by powertul fortresses. It is morc than probable that the apparent intention to cross at Ismail is only a feint to draw attention from the real crossing-place up. the Danube on the Servian frontier, near Gladova, whence the army could casily torn the Balkan Mountains and pene- trate the heart of Turkey injthe direction of Sophia and Adrianople. The Russian army in Asfatic Turkey, as orig- inally organized, composed a corps of over 100,000 men, cemmanded by the Grand Duke Michael, brother of the Czar. The Russians since the Crimean War have constructed their roads with reference to possible wars in this very section, and their communications, there- fore, are now perfect. She has a railroad run- ning from the Don to the foot of the Caucasus, and has reduced the timc of travel to two days. Across the mountains shc has con- structed a fine macadamized road extend- f AN " Diarbekr 2 Lo, Bast from 213 Greenwlel\ _ vo,--i:‘ ing to Tifiis on the Kur, through the valley of which sha hss & perfectly easy approach into Armenia. The basc of the Army of tho Caucasus is at Erivan. The locality of the skirmishing recently reported from Constantinople is in the Turkish vilayet north of Armenia and along the coast of the Black Sea cast of Trebizond, and near the mouth of the Tchoruk River. The two object- ive points of the Russian army are Trebizond and Erzeroum. Trebizond is the Capital of the vilayet, and is the first commercial port of Turkey in importance on the Black Sea, im- porting large amounts of grain from Russia and the Danube, and commanding the overland trade with Persia. Erzeroum, the second ob- jective point of the Kussians, is the Capital of Armenia, on the west branch of the Euphrates, about 110 miles southeast of Trebizond. It is the halting-place of the caravans from Teheran to Meces, and the distributor of the Trebizond trade with the East, and commands the road from Constantinople to Persia, and its posscs- sion by the Russians will give them control of Armenia and the south shore of the Black Sea. Kars, the location of Sunday’s battle, is a for- tified city of Turkish Armenia, situated on the River Kars, 100 miles northeast of Erzeroum, and avout the same distance inland from the ex- treme east coast of the Black Sea. Itis acity of about 15,000 inhabitants. The place is partly walled, and contains a number of mosques, also several Armenian churches and convents, most of the latter being in ruins. It was taken by the Russian General Paskevitch in 1823, and oc- cupied two years. In 1855, having been strong- Iy fortified under the direction of English engi- neers, it was strenuously defended by Gen. Williams and Ismail Pasha against the Russians under MuraviefL An attempt to captureit by assault (Sept. 29) failed after a bloody strugele, but the place finally surrendered from famioe at the end of November. Later on the place reverted to Turkish possession, and has so re- mained for over twenty years. TO RENT. b FENANCIAL. OCEAN STEAMSHIPS. FOR RENT. DESRABLE OFFICES IN THE TRIBUNE BUILDING TO REINT.
