D. conuays London Leter to Clncinnati Com- merci It looks asif we were aboutto have rebellion among fashionshle young people against the mar- riage services of the Church of Encland. Itis not only because sentiment has outgrown the promise of the bride to *‘cbes,” on which the clergy still insist, though instances incresse in which the ladies refuse o utterit; but thereare some portions of the service which are almost coarse, and make the young people blush. The clergyman has, of course, no right to modify the service. There are TMOW §0 many marriages per- formed by the Registrars slone that they find it jmportant to provide neat rooms in which to re- celye wedding companies. The Registrar simply asks the man and womun by name if there Jega) impediment, and then asks each il he and she will take the other a8 Lusband, as wife; it requires that they say **No® 10 thie impediment question and -*Yes'" to the lust, and by the utter- nnce of these two words they are married. Two witncases sign the certificate, the Registrar pockets his small fixed fec, and the afairisover. This kind of marriage I largely resorted to where one of the partics has been divorced, in which case few of the clergy will ofliciate, and still_more in cases where the partics hold different religious opinions. Among many modifications of marriage celebra- tions supplied by the Nonconformist bodics, that of the Quakers has_recently attracted atiention. For 200 years the Quakers “have enjoyed among themselves the privilege of being married without the interference of cituer Registrar, clerzy, or uuy of their own ministers; but lately they Lave agreed tw receive in their meeting-houses parties not of their fuith, and recently an eminent Parliament ary circle was preseut to witness the mu ae of two young people in the Quaker meeting- Louse near Lincoln'’s lun, neither of whom were or are Quakera, Thebridegroom was M. Maclaren, gon of the member for Ediuburch University. Mra. Maclaren 18 a sister of John Bright, and was 2 Quaker, but married *‘ont of meeting.” Her Son, just married, **has never mamfested any Quaker proclivities,” and the young Jads—3lizs Yochin—belonged. 1'belicve, to the Chureh of En- gland, butaid not like its marriage service. There Were present the whole tribe of Brights, 2 larse one. and most of their friends, among otliers the two younger daughters of Richard Cobden. Tho appearance of the nssembly showed that the old Quaker peculiarities of dress are things of the past, there being on the raised dais or plutform Teserved for elders moue Who worc the Quuker garb, and eeveral female ** Friends " with gay bonxots. The bride and bridegroom were in full wedding raiment, and the bridesmaide, with their veils and bright costumes, represenied an in- yasion of the sombre place ‘which might make the dust of George Fox shudder in the “neighboring graveyard. The Quakers 8o rarcly zet any worldly people into their dolefal establishment that they thought it necessary to improve this occasion, and there was a lugubrious prayer from one and a wearisome sermon from another of their mini: ters. ‘These were voted bores, and, if tbe Quaker marriage is to find favor, these_incldents will have 10 be omitted, for there is not in that sect in Lon- don a preacher of even average ability of ejther -sex; but the marriage was attractive. Young Maclaren zrose, and safd that he took Miss Pochin 10 be his wife, and promised by the belp of God 10 be 10 her a aithful and Joving husbond. After a brief silence the young lady was moved to rise up, extend “her hand, which the outh took, and eaid she accepted him as hor has- d, and promised to be to him a faithful and af- fectionato wife, The aflair was over, a certificate lay_on the table which nearly all present signed, and then all went off to 2 pleasant wedding-breal fi: émln'hgu after noon not being legal in En- nd). On the day after the pleasant occasion just men- tioned, a marmage occarred in London—but this time in a church—which possesscd some romantic features, ‘A few monthsago a paragraph in the papers described a melancholy accident which be- 1ell a young man while out shooting. A stray shot ‘entered one of his eres and extinzuished it. This | gentleman was nighly cducated and conmected, thoogh withont fortune, and he was only 23 “years of ace. Hc was brought to his Jodging-honse in London, where he lay sui- fering. But_a wealthy and handsome young widow, on whosc estatcs he bappened to be slioot- nig when the accident occarred, came zud took up her abode in the same bouse In order to nure him. MHer care was cxiended througk several wcekz.hbn! alas! the other eye sympathized with that which had been put out, and it, too, was cx- tinguished, leaving the youth and echolar Lope- lessly and totally blind.” But the pretiy widow was equal to the occasion. She propozed 10 him—mar- riage. The result was a splendid company alight- ingut the door of 2 fashionsble church in uur neighborhood; a beautiful dame of 0, attended by her two hifle children, leading a blind youth of 2 to the altar, there to cndow bim with all lier extensive worldly goods; and the two are mow enjoying their honeymoon on the fine cstate where the gentleman may meditate on the ancient say- ings which declaréd misfortune and fortune to be near neighbors. MADAME BODISCO. Washingtor. Correspondence Cincinnatf Commercial. Our slster city, Georgetown, {s made up almost emtirely of old houses, eachone of which husits story, its ghost, or its Drilllant memories, for it wasa center of commerce and fashion when Wash- ington was scarcely planned. Among the latter I the Bodisco house, 10 which Waldemar Bodisco, ‘Dbeanty, as we had the sad opportanity of secing & few years since, when she returned among s fol shor stay, Her sonsare officers in the Russian armiy, and_her danchter has just been making a Visii fo the beantifal. Madame von Overbeck, nee Goddard, at her home in Stuttgardt. ENGLISH AND AMERICAN TWOMEN. One day a lady whom I hed "had the pleasure of taking in to dinner in o country house mear Lon- don, and whom I had =oon found to be onc of those eimple-minded, good-natured, trath-telling wo- men who are notably common in England, spoke 1o me about some ladies who, on a previous dsy, had attracted her attention, zddivg, **I knew they were Americans.” **How?" I asked. ‘‘Oh, we always know American women!" **But how, pray?” She thought a moment, and answered: ** Dy their beauty—they are almost always pretty, if uot more—by thelr fine complexions, and by their exquisite dress.” T did not tell her that I thought that she was right; but that she was 50 I had by that time become convinced. And yet I should’ say that the most beantifol wo- men 1 had ever seen were English- women, were 1t not for the memory of a Frenchwoman, & German, and & Czech. Butthe Iatter three were rare exceptione. Beauty is vecy much commoner among wolnen of the English race than among those of any other with which I am ac- qusinted; and among that race it is commoner fn “+America " than in England, I 2sw more beanty of face and figure at the first two receptions which 1 attended after my return than [ had found among the hundreds of thousands of women whom I bad seen in England. The types ure the same in both countries: but they secm to come near to perfection mach oftencr here than there. Beauty of featare is, however, sometimes more clearly defined in England than here. The mouth in particularwhen it is beantiful is more statucsque. The curves are morc decided, 2ud at the junctlon of. the red of the lips with the white there is & delicately raised outline which marks the form of the feature in a very noble wey. This may aléo be said of the noetril. It gives n _chiseled eflect to those features which is not so often found in *America™; but the nose itself, the brow, and the set and carriage of the bead are generally finer among ** Awericans.” In both countries,” how- cver, the head is apt to be too large for perfect proportion. This 18 3 characteristic defect of the English type of beauty. Its effect is ecen in Stoth- ard’s fgures, in Etty's, and in those of other En- glish pamters. Another defect is in the heaviness of the articulations. Really fine arms are rare; but fine wrsts are still rarer.” Such wrists a3 the Viennolse women have—of which I enw a wonder- fal cxample in the Viennoise wife of a Sussex gen- tleman—are plmost unknown smong women of English race in either country. 1t i3 often suid, even in England, that **American™ women have more Leantiful feet than Englishwomen have. This 1 am inclined to doubt. The feet may be emaller here; and they generally look smalier, because’ Englishwomen, weat” larger and_beavier shoes. ‘hey are obliged to do so becanse they walk more, and because of their moister climate, Dut merc smallucss is not a beauty in a foot more than in any other part of the body._ Beauty is the shape, proportion, and color; and fect are often cramped out of shape and out of proportion in other countrica than China. A foot to be beautiful should seem fit for the body which it supporta—to stand upon and walk with, 1tis sald by some persons, who by raying It profess 1o know, that Nature, prodigal of charms to En- glishwomen in Lust, shoulders, aund arms, is chery of them elscwhere, and that their beanty of fizure i8 apt to stop at the waist. Cpon thi# polnt 1 do not veotare to give an opinion; bat 1 am inclined todoubt the judgment in quextion upon general physiological principles, - The human figure is the development of a germ; and it is not natural that, whatever oay be the case with individuals, the type of a whole race in one country should present this inconsistency. Engtish Paper. The old-time fancy for distributing wedding fav- ora is again in vogue; directly after the ceremony and while the newly-married pair, with the more immediate relatives, are siguing the register. the ‘bridesmaids dispense them. The giftsdesigned for the lady guests consist of small bows of white satin ribbon tying little spraya of jessamine; those for the gentiemen are a spray of oak-leaves and acorns without ribbon, while the bridesmaids’ favors have some distinctive mark, such asa spray of forget- me-not. Their bouquets are the quft of the bride- rroom and are sent before the ceremony with the Tocket or other souvenir which he presents them. He also furnishes the bride with her flowers for the occasion.. When the service takes place in church the cere- mony is generally performed entircly at the com- munion-rails: but in bigh churches the actuzl cere- mony, in England particularly, takes pluce in tae ‘body of the church, and the briaal party, preceded by the ofliciating clergy, moves on into the chancel for the subsoquent portion of the service. Allar- rangements u3 to fecs, etc., are conded to the Dest man: while the chlef bridesmaid's duty is to take the bride’s bouquet and gloves when the sery- ice begins, - The Interval between the arrival of the guests at the houte and-the breakfast is generally employed inan inspection of the wedding presents, which arespresd ont for examination’ on a variety- of tables, —one for plate, another for jewelry, one for china, one for glass ornaments, etc., each gift be- ingaccompanied bya slip of paper, bearing the name of the donor. Wedding breakfasts are now often arranged on the plan of 3 ball supper, with several round tables and a long buffet, where the majority of the com- pony take their lunch standing, the tables being ‘appropriated to the relatives of the bridegroom an the principal guests. Frequently, however, the old custom of a sitting-down breakfast is adhered 10, and, if itis, the wedding-cake is placed in the centre of the table and the’ bride and bridegroom take their places oppositetoit. In the former lan, the cake is placed in the centre of the buflet. Very fre- quently the bridesmaids all sit opposite fo the bride, accompanicd by the genllemen who have been desired by the hostess to take them down; the best man' invaribly tak- inz the chief bridesmaid. Speeches ace now confmed—when there are any ot all—to the health of the brice and bridegroom, pro- posed in a few words—the fewer the beiter—by the gentlemen of the highest rank prosent.
