MASONRY AND TOE MORAL LAW. at s needless to reiterate the fact that Free- masovry is not a sect, neither is it, in itsgen- interpretation, a religion, yet in its strict pretation it dues inculeate a code of morals pire and devoid of selfishuess as that taught Ly the church itself. Its foundation stove be- iz taith in God, our code of morals is that of the Bible, and however liberal or restricted its terpretation by those not of us, Masonry in- ~ls upun a literal conetruction of ali those suciples of @ bigh-toved murality, without wui. hall faitn is vaun and all professions of no is is a fair construction of the broad prin- upon which the Order is founded, the first ~Sous 10 Which are received and acveded to at e very thresicld of the Euntered Apprentice deprec and increased in its binding force as it runs throuxh all the degrees included in Ancient C.ait Masoary, and tu a strict observavee of wlicu a% are Lound by the most irrevocable en- pugements to keep and perform. How, then, the faithval Craftsman lay them aside with grace_and engage in tboge doubtful nities of life that carry with tiem nought v aud corruption? Euper buL deseneracy A nrst stated, Freewasenry is not a religion, fa the popular sease, but it coes inculeate and i of its followers a rigid adherence to the s o1 that * Greet Lizht # without which ould be his patbway through life and vumy bis hope of a future minortality. And yet ti.cre are men. claiming to be Masons, who e Lving in the daity practice of those grosser rxesses and imwmoralities from which thelr carlier and later pledges bind them to abstain. Liow kad, and yet ligw true, that in many < men are 1o be found wio are drunkards, wamblers, adulterers. slandercrs, oppressors, Zud meny otherof the grosser oficnders agninst cood society and good morals! Wo sce the cvil, let ne go waere we will, und we sce. Loo, tue terrivle effect it is having upon society at lurge, aad thue memvership also. Musonry is judged by the morality of its mem- berenip; and tlie example uf oni bad man will do more to warp public opinion than the good 2xample of a dozen others can undo,'so long as the vad are allowed to remain in the lodges. Nuw, we call upon the officers of the lodges 1o talkic bold of this matter, mect the 1seuc firm- Iv,and purge their lodges of ail impuritics. Unless you do, good men will neitlier come nor antong you, aad our beloved Order will be forted to the wall under tnis foul cloud. Of- il.ers, brethren, remenber your obligations, do your duty and purge your lodges.—.Masonic Journal, Greensboro, N. C. IMPOSTORS. The number of impostors traveling about the cour is unusuully large, aud their brazenness i~ zimost beyond belleq, if it hus not been wit- ssed, Tu obtain money they hesitate at noth- c {u the way of false pretenses, sud, there- T..re, it becomes all lodges and brethren to be very cireful on whown they bestow charity. If the applicant is a stranger, his diploma with s 1ecent receipt for dues should be demanded, and, if they are not produced, resort should be ud Lo the mails or to the h:luz'm}yb. ‘This pre- caution is all the more necessary from the Iact tiat many of the impostors are either suspend- o1 or expeiled Magons or their confreres. This duigence should be exercised that the wortuy 4y be juvariably assisted and the unworthy re- 1used.— Volce, TOUNG WORSHIPFUL MASTERS. M.-. W.~. Bro. Cushiuy, of Texas, thus gives are of the reasons why dissentious exist iu many lodges: iore than half of all the troubles of our lodges ¢ from the ambitiun of Joungmen 0 wield the Master's guvel. More than half the Masters of Tudies, who are thas new to the eituation, are ut- teriy iznorant of the constitution. the landmarks, the Grand Lodge edicts, the customs, and the i:odes of government of the institution. Hence, when calied upon to decide yuestions, they evolye conclusions from the depthe of their own origi- nulity, Dot always 100 decgaw be sounded, and tho views of thoee who have had more experience are ouiraged. Samctimes young Assons make the Lest Masters, but ench are only wen of principle and_stugents, and whose ambitivn is more the good of the institution thn personal advancement. A New Use for Parrots. That notable tvpe of precocious depravity, the gamin le Paris (says the London Giobe), bas aza:n been distinguishing himself by & brilliant ‘nvention, which scemns to have been a grand success until detected the ottier day and exposced 1t the Police Court. The professor of the new science began by providing himeself with a_tame purrot, which was trained, like a falcon in the aze ot chuvalry, to return to the fist of his wwaer in obedience to a particular word of com- mand. Accompanied by this aily, safely housed in 2 small cage, the urchin wonld go into a procer’s ghiop, as if for the purpose of making a vurchase. Mardly had he entered the shop, huweser, when tue prisoncr escaped, to the in- tense apparcut alarmo of the poor owoer. Of coursc the eynpathy of all present was instantly aroused, and every onc—shopman, sssistants, aud chance customers—rushed about in pursuit of the lost bird. While the chase was at its Lieight the adroit youth would be filling his pociets with all” the most costly delicacies e ‘within his reach, and as soon as a sufficlent quantity had been collected wonld call the bird to him, pretend to catch him, march off With him and with the booty. The trick was ruined by its own success, a_too frequent use of it having excited the indiznation of the trades- men, and brought about an application to the Yolim who have now been down on two of- enders caught in the very act. z R e — HUMOR, A salesmsn praising his goods is said to be like an opiate, because Le's laudin’ ’em. 4What is that man yelling at?” asked a farm- er of his boy. * \Vh’;,” ctfuck]ed the urchln! ¢he's—he's yelling at—at the top of his voice!” ¢ Keep from intestine wo,” sang the Pennsyl- vania-Day poet at the Centennial. °Lhis is sup- <ed to convey a positive warningagainst drinke RI“V any of the Schuylkill water. g On the Channel, where the voyace roduces the usual effect.
