16 N\ SUNDAY, OCTCBER 8, 1876 -SIXTEEN PAGES. THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE the story that Thackeray at a party once asked Mr. Ticknor if he knew Theodore Parker, and when he repiied with a Jook of disdain that he did not, re- g}:ed. **Then I am afraid you don’t move in the st soclety. " It is very curious to read this now, and rather peculiarly interesting to one who has not gone over the fence with the general flock. How- ever, 35 one feature of the success, I'm glad of its selling property for the publishers’ sake, who deserve every sible success for the ex- uisite manner in which they bring out books. e last thing of theirs in exquisiteness is Longfeliow’s * Poems of Places.” Talk about Euglish books! No English book in cloth ever began to compare with these two beautiful vol- umes. It is a luxury of totch and sight to hold these books in one’s hand and turn the tinted, satin-finished leaves. The most important book probably of the season will be HARRIET MARTINEAU’S AUTOBIOGRAPHT, which J. R. Osgood & Co. will issue in No- vember. With the autobiography there will be 2 memoir by her American friend, Mrs. Chap- man. It will be uniform in size and style with the George Ticknor books. Of course all culti- vated radicals will scek these volumes with pe- cullar interest, but to every thinking, intellect- ual person they must be welcome. ~After this autobiography there will probably be a demand for her * Society in America,” and ber novels, the title of one of which, ‘“’The Man and the Hour,” is certainly suzgestively taken even in this day of queer titles. Special Correspendence of The Tribune. BosTON, Oct. 4.—Airs. Sarzent opens the sea- #on with a very interesting “reception,” given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Smalley, from London. Mr. Smalley is the New York ZT'ribune’s distin- guished correspondent. Mrs. Smalley, who, by the way, is specially interesting to Bostoniaus, a5 the adopted daughter of Wendell Phillips, is said to be the most popular American resident in London. The position of her husband in con~ nection with the New York Zribune, of course, gives them almost an official place in society, and makes their home a resort for both literary and diplomatic people. Mrs. Sargent's party ‘was at noonday, and though at such an ususual hour, as a business man said, ‘“right in the heart of the momlnE" it did pot fail o draw. And now Mr. Murray is going into the story- telling business. That is, it, will not be a continuation of the sketches, but atale the background of which and some of the characters are of the Adiron- dack region. Mr. Theodore M. Brown, widely known as a problem-composer of the first rank, and 2lso as o strong chess-player, died at his home in Penn Yan, N. Y., on Monday, the 25th of September. When Mr. Brown first commenced the etady of chess is not known, but as far back as November, 1838, he edited with ability the chess department in the St. Louis Democrat. He was 2 successful competitor in several problem tourneys. both in this_country and Europe, and his fine compositions are to be found in the chess literature of the last twenty vears.
