VOLUME XXXI. WESTEEN TRADE. { f sy CHICAGO, SUNUAY. OCTOBER 1, 1876—SIXTEEN PAGES. CLOTHING Representative Houses. Tir OPENTXG of & branch house in Chicago by A. T. Stewart & Co. 18 a large addition to {he importance of Chicago as a business centre, “gnd is cvidence of the fact that the business men of the West prefer to buy in Chicago rather | zflun in New York. The Western buyer is an | ntelligent one, and to the cxtent of his means 1ghrays wants the best. The tendency of intelli- i gent merchants is largely to encourage this de- mand, for experience has taught that the dealer . whose goods and whose manner of doing busi- gess has attained @ public celebrity is not only enabled to sell, but forced to sell, nt moderate , prices, and to furnish & good article. In every ;mnmry in the world a well-established mercan- tile reputation s & very valuable element in * pastness, and recognized as the very best guar- I antees a stranger can have in making purchases. A countryman thinks h is buying a watch very { cheap 8t some auction shop. He hears every 7 reprecentation made that will be likely to in- * gnence the sale,—yet if the same countryman ¥ spplicd to N. Matson & Co. be would have |. . learned that every representation made would conform to the truth, and that whatever he ; bought had Intrinsic value. The purpose of the fuclosed scheme of news- < paper advertising is to bring intelligent and re- ¥ gponsible buers into a wider acqualntance with § dealers of established reputation, to the mu- ¢ tusl advantage of both. FIRST DISTRICT. A BOW IN THE CAMP. Union Hall has seen noisy times. Never be- fore, however, has it witnessed such disgraceful scenes as took place thereyesterdayin the cffort to nominate & Democratic candidate for Con- gress from the First District. To describe the crowd it is only necessaryto say that the twa classes of Democrats wers present,—the plugs and the respectables. They belonged exclusive- ly to neither faction,—Caulficld's or Hoxic’s. They were found in each, snd in grest profu- sion. The idea of a contest was uppermost in most minds, and none were disappointed. [t was clear from the start that there would be trouble. It was in theairand in the complex- ion of the crowd, and the proceedings will show how everybody’s anticipations were realized. Promptly at 11 o'clock, Gen. Corse, Chalrmaz. of the Congressional Committee, ranped oo tho tahle and called the elements toorder. Im- mediately R. E. Goodell jumped up and nomi- nated E. F. Cullerton for temporary Chairman. Somebody else nominsted Gen. Corse. Howlg of approval and dissatisfaction followed from the representatives of the two sides. Gen. Corse tried to cvoke order out of the chaos, but his cfforts were fruitless. J.H.Rea, one of the respectables, who had taken 3 seat Dear tho front, tried to get a hearing, and succeeded in saying that Gen. Corsc-should nominate the temporary Chairman. He was rewarded for his pains by the pertinent observation from Gen. Corse that he ought to take bis seat. The noise continuég, both sides tryiag to get a hearing, and Ge] rse advising and entreat— ing all parties to come to order, and not behave like a lot of schoolboys. He managed to re- store partial quiet, and read the published call. Having got this duty off his mind, he nominated A. D. Waidron, of Hyde Park, as temporary Chairman. R. E. Goodell jumped up and renewed his pomination of E. F. Cuilerton. Gen. Corse put his nomination of Mr. Wal- dron, and the afirmative votes certainly were in the majority, although the noes were loud and T Forsyth ted a chalr in great hast obn Forsythe mounted a e, e Chair. and appealed from the decision of Gen. Corse—I have decided. . Everybody now esteemed it his duty to nolsily proclaim that he appealed from the decision of the Chair. Gen. Corse introdaced Mr. Waldron as tem- porary Chairman. The Forsythe crowd, the supporters of Barney Caulflcld, received the an- nouncement with evident disgust, while the Hoxie men, led by Mr. Rea and other respecta- ble gentlemen, looked quictly o, their more noisy partisans_expressing_their approbation with howls of delight. Mr. Waldron stood un- movyeable amidst the noise and confusion. Jobn Forsythe put the nominaticn of Cul- lerton, and were cries for Cullerton and cries for Waldron.
