One of the most sagacious af the oid opponents of Masonry, John Quincy Adams, recognized the impor- tance of this lan3uage, when he svowed that Masonry could not be destroyed until its landmarks were first removed. Take away the landmarks, and you destroy the untversality of the language. Do this, and the parapbernalia of the Lodge-room degenerates to tinacl, cereiony becomes a mockery, and the ritual a farce. Without_ the inner mesning which illumisates the landmarks, wotds aud pliraset, tropes sad metapbors may be marshaled in vain, It is truth which gives pleiuness and brightness. Not many years #20 there came to the editors of one of our leading dailies at Chicago an emissary from oue Pomeroy, late Uniied States Scnator from Kiusss, trying t0'have published the recent tirado of that per- £on against Masonry, The proposition was declined by the editor-in<hiel. Money was offercd for its in- sertion as ap sdvortisement, snd even that was de- clined, althongh some people think anything can buy its way into the pablic press. The agent was politely invited o take himself and his wares elsowhere. Thie production was sensational to s degree, and » sensa- tion is a fortuue to a newspaper, An editor is never held responsivle for his advertising columns, unless obviously endangering the public murals or publio or- der. The Esyptian Deity was designated by the ultributes Wisdom, Power, and Goodness, Toe Piatoniat styled them the Soverelgn Good, Inteflect, and Euergy. The Brahmins, or Hiero- phanis of Hindoo mytlology, conceived and repre- tentod these three al-0, and in the solemn cersmouies of initiation, weare told : * The chief Brahmin sat in_ the East, high exalted on a brilliant throne, clad in. » flowing robe of azure, thickly sparkled with' golden stars, aud bearing in bis bond a cal rod—thus symbolizing Bralima, the Creator of the world. The representative of Vishnu, the setting sun, was placed ou an exalted throne in the West ; and he who per- sonated Siva, the meridian sun, occupied & splendid throne in the South™ As in the Masonic lodge, bounded oply by the extremo points of fuo compass, the higuest heavena and the lowest depths of the cen- t7al abyss, theso three Tepresent Wisdom, Strengts, and Beauty. *In like manner the Persians, who termed thelr emblematical caveor lodge the Empyrean, feignad it to be supported by threo intelligances, Or- Tmisda, Mithra, sud Alithras, who were usually de- nominated, from_certain characteristica, which they were supposed individuxily to possess, Eteraity, Fe- cundity, aud Authority.” ~And thus everywhets these threo must be present, not only to the Universe, but 1o the world and to the single buman life. It s excellent to bavea giant's strength; but it i tyrannous {0 use ‘¢ like & giant.” Drule strength alone commands no admiration from any thinking Deing. Divide and conquer 18 ons of the oldest injunctions to tue General, Djvision s the signal for dissolution, Death i8 the groatest of divisors. Multitudes in numbers are oftentimes but accumu. lated weukness. A very small army will scatter » vast mob, The immensity of the Alexandrine Empirs doomed fts disntegration to its original parts.” Rome wag omnipotent until it believed it raled the world, The millions of Xerses' srmy Were acattered and brok- en to indistinguishable fragments but a few days after be wept at the thought: “In a hung years All these will be dead.” The burning breath of QJisunion corrodes faster than the inevitabls tooth of Time. Whe Titus encamped around Jerusalem, its internal discords accomplished more for ita destruc- tion than did the javelins, the catapults, and mines of his soldiery. In upjon there is strength, Not the balf million men around our altars prove greatuess, but the brotherhood of 1celing which compacts them into one. Timehooored usiges sad forms afford them 2 common language, but it s Trutn only which Yils this lsnguage with power. Masonry csumot be overihrown until the grand truths which” underlie its supporting pillars are destroyed out of the world. Lame men get op_horseback to conceal their de- formity, and men void of understandiog get up into clamor against Masouic forms to hide mental and ‘morul incapacity to see and receive the inner spisit “which makea the form forceful and fustinct with life 2nd beauty. To us Masons comes the practical in- Junction that, while we adoere as closely as well may De to the grand oid ritual forme of the craft, snd sack 10 preserve the consistency and order of its needfol requlations, we sball not permit little and pitiful dif- ferences about any of thess to mar the harmony which everywhere :Loald preval within our myatic ‘t0.8 doing, the pillars of this temple shall never be shaken, ROT the fire upon ita witars ever go out, 5.
