THE CITY. THE REV. JOHN CORDON. COMPLIMENTARY TESTINOSIAL AT FARWREL WALL. There are few ministera of thea Gospel in Chicago who havo atiainod so high » place fn the estoem and rospect of poople of ali denomina- fone a8 bagthe Rov. John Gordon, until lately tho pastor of the Western Avenue Baptist Church. Few indeed can show #0 proud s record of the reaulta of carneat zeal and anflagging work in tho ministerial spbore, His talante asa preacher, not loss than bis qualitics as a man and a Chriatlan, have placed bim in the front rank of Chicago clergymen; and tho general approval by all classes of the rotigious com- munity of bis manly and dignitied course thronghont the troubles in the Western Avenue Church, which finally culminated in bie resigns~ tion of ‘tho pastorate, found fitting expression Inst evening in @ munical and literary entertaia~ mont tendered at Farwell Hall san complimon- tary (estimonlal to Mr. Gordon, It wae by no means Baptiet affair, but was participated in hv the beat people of the city. irresvective of cect. The severity of tho weather did not pro- vent a large attendance, and the entertninmont offered wanin overy respect worthy of tho oc- casion. Weber Tauslg proper that wo should now hear from the other sido. ‘The first anbject of importance is that of placing conductors on the “bob-cara.” This is & vory good suggestion, a8 a conductor Is a very nice animal to have on a etreot-car, as be is eo kind and obliging, slmavs keeping the rear door opon, 20 a8 to cause pasnongors to feol as If the: were inside of s refrigorator, and you muat al- ways pay your fare, or else ho will “bounce” you. And ho is always 62 rccommodating, ea pecially to lauy prssongers, and, to give Lim tho Tull benedlt of this subject, he is a very handy article to conduct passongers to just the street that they don't want to go to, and ho is vory nor- viceable to conduct doad-beats of of his car. And, lastly, he is faithfot to his own little voat- pocke:, by conducting every stray nickel into it thathe happens to “knock down." Thus wo lhave tho stroet-car condustor, a hv now is, aod ia akely to always romain. 1 will now proceed to give neveral good reasona why E think that it would bo detrimental to the South Sido Company to place conductors on their cars: First, tho Company operates 800 of theno cara, which cost thom on an average 3800 each, making a total cost of $240,000. Tho cars are not fitted for a conductor, as there fs no rear platform for Lin to stand on; hore wo Lave the very first obetacio to cantend with. Second, if conductors wore put on the cars, large Natform would hareto be attached, the fare- zea takev out, and eovoral olor minor changea made, which would make an sveraze expense of abont 2100 for cach car, which would make s total expense of $50,000, So much for # beginniug. Nov, you have got to employ a conductor for eich oar, whoso wages average 93 per day, and with adriver at the eamo figures, tt would amount to $1,900 a day just for employes. ‘Lhird, the cara sill only scat twonty passengais, whilotho double cars comfortably soat about tate comfortably eeating thirty passeogors, specially fitted for a conductor and drivor. If now cars woro to be purchased, the oncs that aro pow in uso would be lying idle, a4 thoy the purchaso of now cars, capable of and Afra, Li HE Watson, thirty. One Great festure of tho * bobs" is, that # porsou can go lo Stato streot sud get acer thst is going aouth every two minutes, aud, if double carts wore used, vou could got ona only evory eight minutes, Thus you eco we havea saving of six niinutes (quite a long time to stand on a streot corner these cold davs waiting for a ptroct-car). Lhbave observed that thecats on Cottage Grove avenue, State streot, and Archer rond are crowd- ed with mechanics every morving on thoir way to theic work, Now, if they bad to wait from eight torixteen minutes every morning fora car, it would cauuo a great loss of time on their part, and it cau bo called a great accommodation to getaboard acar and juat pasa up your faro, and not bo waiting half'an hour with a aickol im your band, almost froczing, while you aro “ waiting for the conductor.” ‘Cho Times Brat informed its readers that tho Company woro violating one of the most im- portunt provisions of their chaiter, the ecction that calla for a carwithaconductor, These glad tidinga wore esgorly recoivad by the vast army of dead beats always fouud on o atreot- car, nnd they linve carried the suggestion mado hy tte Times into good effect by entering the car and takingo seat, without paying any fara. Finally tho driver takes unou himself the cognomen of a conductor, and boldly enters the ear and collects tho fare and deposits Jt in the fare-box.
