Standard, Jan, 20, Avery sad occurrence took pléce at Clinton yesterdsy morning, the particulars of which we Jearn from Dr. E. G. Macy, who happened to be near at the time, Mr. James Brooks, who is Constable of that township, has a family of nine very promising children. Among them wero two little boys, one aged 7 and the otber 5 years. ‘Yesterday morning }fr. Brooks was standing by the stove with his children around him. He had a revolver in his pocket, or strapped around him, which by some moans beceme disengaged and fell. ‘The pistol struck the stove in the fall, and one barrel was diecharged, the ball passing through the body of the little 5-yesr-old child and into the body of the other. The bali struck the youngest child near the navel, and, - passing throngh the body, came out near the spinal column, producing death ina sbort time. After passing through the youngest child, the ball entered the body of the 7-year-old boy’ above the hip, and passed into the abdomen, where it lodged. The oldest boy may recover, although very seriously injured. The bali bad not been extracted this morning. The boy that .was killed was a remarcably SSright little fellow, and the sad accident has overwhelmed the family with distress. ‘The most remarkable part of this ead affair re- msing to be told. The night before the acci- dent, the oldest boy, after t being pnt to bed up- Btairs, awoke in s great fright, and came down- stairs, Ho told his father that a neighbor's boy (calling him by name) had shot bim and ns little brother, and that his brother died, but he @id not. ‘The little fellow was dreaming, but Le was go much frightened that he would not go to hig bed again, so bis father took dim in bis -own bet to pacify him, whero he slept the remainder of the night. Anderson, was instantly killed, and the fireman, Walter Cummings, was quite seriously injured. Tho scene of the wreck this morning was truly terrible. The broken rail, which caused tho diaaster, met just about tho centre of the curve. Although the west side of the track was torn up for abgué 500 feet, the engine avd beggage-car did not go over the 2U-foot embankment until they had run that distance. The day-coach and tho sleeper were left standing on s small bridge which spans the rondway leading to Black Hill, All the ties on the bridge were torn up and shoved together, and “many of them broken in two. ‘The only truck left on the rails .as the rear truck of the sleeper. Tho rest of the wheels were hanging on by aheir's breadth of ties and stringers, and the elightost deviation from their position would havo precipitated both carsinto the roadway beneath. The dead engi- neer is said to have an uncle in Chicago. KILLED BY THE CARS. Special Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune. Cmmuiicoras, O., Jan. 22.—Capt. From the Boston Tranacrirt, Earl Ruseell’s Recollections will appear from the prees of Roberts Brothers as coon as {3 work can be printed, progress having becn stopped by a telegram from London. The noble Lord has canceled somo fifty pagesof matter, which very likely s curious world may always be endeavoring to recover, He bas not, however, cen fit to suppress the following lines, which will appear in the revised pages. Alluding to his declination to svbmit the question of the Alabama to arbitration, he says: “If Mr. Adams, in his answer to me, had stated that the ‘Amenican Government neither wished to call in question the good faith of Great Britain, nor to deny that our Jaw officers were the bost suthori- ties to-decide the meaning of a British statute: if, Tsay, Mr. Adams, who is a man of high honor and unblemished character, had given me theso assurances, I should at onca have agreed to ar- bitration ; but Mr. Adams knew perfectly well that he could give meno suck assurances. In fact, Mr. Fish, who succceded Mr. Seward as Secretary of State, did not scruple to allege that Lord Palmerston and I, the Prime Minister and Secretary of State, Sir Roundell Palmer and tho Law Officers of the Crown, Sir Thomas Freo- mantle and the Commissioners of Cusioms, foro all guilty of falsehood and hypocrisy." ee ‘emperance in the M. A Philadelrhia paper tells the following story of acar-diiver in that city who was frozen to Seath at his post. If truo, itis singular that no ‘name is given. It says: ‘The fortitudd dic- played by the renownad pilot on the Lake Erie packet, in meeting death at his post and saving the lives of the passengers, was emulated on Saturday night, during the passage of the polar ware, by sdniver of a Market strect car, who froze to death while driving the car to the depot at Forty-firet street and Haverford svenue. When near the depot, the conductor rang the bell, signalling for the car to stop. It was not heeded. Again he pulled, and no attention was paid. Ho then went to the front of the ear, and found the driver numb from exposuro, and dead. The man vas sitting ubright, with the reins through his hands. When “the denot was reached he was Femoved, and effort hse made to restore life, bat with no success, The man was comatiit 28 years of age,” AMUSEMENTS, HALSTED-ST. RA HOUSE, Cor.
