grb Kinens nll UNIVERSALISM. Notable Gathering of Leading Mcm- bers of the Denomination, Mass Conference of Ministors and Laymen of the North- Wests Interesting Discussion of “The Outlook of the Work.” Remarks by Dr. Ryder, the Rev. Mr. Pullman, and Others. MORNING SESSION, ‘Tie FIRST OF A BENUES of masa conforonces of the ministers and laymen of the Univoraaliat Church of tho Northwont ns- sembled in thia city yesterday morning at St, Paul's Obureh, Uichlgan avonue, betwoon Six- teonth and Kighteonth streots, Tho object of these conforencos, which are to be held in rapid snccosaion in the principal citios of tho North- treat, ia to discuss tho iutoresta of tho gencral Church and to promote tho cause vf religion, Tho attendance at the opening yea- torday tas not ne largo as liad been anticipated, or ag it doubtless would havo been with more fa- votable weather, Tha caveral States of tho Northwest, howevor, wera repreaontad, the del- egation from Iowa boing particularly largo. Atoug thoso presont wore tho Rey. R. IL. sull- man, Goneral Becrotary of the Conference of tho United States; the Rov. A. C, Fish, Racine; the Tov. A. C. Countryman, Dubnquo; tho Rev. ‘A. Barnes, Kansas; 410 Rov. W. 8, Balch, Elgin; tho Rov. J.S. Fall, Indiana; tho Hoy. Misa A. J. Chopin, Michigan; the Nov. W. J. Crossly, Urbana: tho Rov. B. F. Rogers, Cedar Rapids; the Rov. J. M. Bailey, Pooria; tho Rov, 0, F. Gibbs, Bycamoro; tho Rov, J. Morofield, Michigan ; tho Rov. James Gorten, Aurora ; and tho Reva, W. LU, Rydor, Sumner Ellis, W. G. Ralph, and E, 1, Ottaway, Chicago. Among tho insmen present wore D. FP. Hill, Paxton; tho Hon. F. 3. Upton, Cedar Napida; Dr. Harris, Grinnell: Abraksm Galo, Galewood; T. TF, Jones, Gstesburg ; and Juucius Eaton, of Urbana, Quito a number of Iadiea commectod with tho churches in the city wore alao presont. The Conferance was callod to order at 11 o'clock by tho Rev. R. II, Pullman, who nomi- nated tho Rev. E. R. Ottaway as Moderator, and tho Rog. James Gorton as Clerk. The Conference vas formally oponed by sing- Ing, 10 by the choir of tho church. Tho Rev. A. Barnes followed in an improssive prayer, iu- yoking Diviue blessing upon tho deliberations bf tho pesajon. ADDRESS OF WELCOME, Tho Moderator then introduced the Rov. Dr. Ryder, who proceeded to extend a hearty wel- come to tho visitora. IIo hoped that nothing would bo Incking in any of the arrangoments to make their visit pleasant, Ife wanted all to focl entirely wolcome to whatever hoapitalities thst might bo oxtended, not ouly the members of the Conferenca who fad yuthered from the surrounding Statos, but all persons of whatever faith, Tho aneccas of the moctiug, as woll as thatof ali utber similar movtings, depended upon tho spirit charactoriz- lugit, Ho would bo bappy to nce prevent an rarnest Mothodiut, # working Presbyterian, or a coneecrated Baptist. ‘he Church believed a larger charity and 9 broader platform would tend to clcvate and qnickon religiuus feeling. It was a great work to break down tho narrow walla between the Universalist oud other de- nominations, IIo rojoiced in tho growing liber- ality of the secular press, and that ho lived whero thoro was uot only tho freedom of speech = but th freedom of worship, While he was in favor of every one worshiping God as ho pleased, that ho or his Church conid not stand indifforent to the wrong ia tho world, [Io belioved an honest doubter stood better before God than a hypo- critical pretender, ‘Tho epoaker renewed hia words of waloomo, anu concluded with the bope that brotherly Jove might permeato tho work of tho session, ° THE REV. RW, PULLMAN was then iutroducod. Ho said the welcomin; addrors had filled the atmospliore with a pecul- far warmth, and hod mado him feol ontiroly at howe. ‘The object of the Conyoution, that of tho promotion of religion, had brought an intelligent Andecaruost assemblage, Le felt that, after tho Convention, cach dalegate would roturn to his home doubly armed to grapplo with the real con- dition of tha Church, ‘The Church needed a re- vival of religion, and seemed to havo aroused elmultaneously to appreciato that fact, bonce the series of moetings in that interest now in- angurated in Chicago, and to exteud throughout the Northwest, to close at Cleveland, ‘Chere were & thousand things to pray for, but tho ona great thing waa the outpouring of God's holy spirit npon the Church, which he hoped wauld be the direction of the prayors of the afternoon sounion. Prayer could accomplish a groat doal, and should be directed ta the one great aud. It mattored not if the prayers were filled .with rop- etitions. ‘The earnestness of prayer was measured in no small degroo by its concontration, and anewor came from the spirit rathor than the language. Lot the prayars, thou, be united in purpose, aud Jot the Church display a hergiam in the cause of univorsal love. Belisving in universal salvation, Tet ue bo united in loving the purposoa of tho Church, and in sdvancing the cause of humanity, ‘The vory statement of the purpose of the Uni- veraal Church waa a grand argument in fayor of Its divinity. Thoy wero taugut y God to love eyorybody os Ho had foved us. Tho most degraded, sbandoucd, snd wicked foul ought, to attract their softest words and = tonderest sympathy, ‘Thoy should sxorciao the faith of the Church alwaye, and thon there would bo no broken hearts and fewer aouragomonta, The darker tho day tho groater would be the triumph, ‘Tho speaker wosed by urging upon the ministry the impor- Yauce of renewed consecration to the great work of bailding up the Church and sproading the ospol truths, DINNER, Atthe conclusion of Mr. Pullman's address, Dr, Ryder came to the platform and extended to all an invitation to partake of dinner, which bad becu prepared by the ladics of the church, and was then spread in tha churets dining-room. After winging, led by the cholr, the Conference adjourned until 2 o'clock, AImmodiately sftor adjournment, the visitors Were conducted to the dining-room, and partook of dinnor, which was all that could be desired in quantily, variety, aud genaral excollonce. Ss AFTERNOON SESSION, DEVOTIONAL EXEUCISES, The Conference was called to order at 9:15. Aveording to the programme, the oxerciscs of tho Orvt bour wero of a devotional charactor, ted Ly Mr, J, I. Swann, of this city. Tha exer- aed consisted of alnging aud prayer, in which the untire Conference united with deop carnest- weas, ‘The noxt order of business was tho discussion sf the “OUTLOOK OF THY WORK IN TUL NonTUWesT,” ed by tho Itey. JamouClorten, ‘Tho speaker aald (Wo mout ought to be made of the condition and 2pportunitios of Uniyersatinm as it wae found. (n tho Northwest the Church was flourishing at vome points, while at other points thore was no organization, although its adherents and frienda wore ready and anxiouato eulist in the great work, What was neoded under the clroume itaucos waa persistent, energetio work, tucked by an unfailing faith in tho Muse. 5 ‘tho financial condition of tho suurch ' was’ found to bo from bad ® worue, bogotton toooften by mismanagement, idea that the finances of the Church uuld take cure of itsolf. ‘Tho idea was mid- ‘ko, for a sound nancial basis had beon found locesgary in atl Uhurches to their religious quick- wing and spiritual growth. Ag @ Church the Ovivoraalista now bad no fixed fluaucial plan, tad, aa s consequence, Was often in debt. | Ex- Wavazance fatherod much of the tingacial atress, wad retarded the proaperity and promotion of fhe Church. ‘the gods helped those who selped themselves, “and Liv experience wan that not yold or charity, but some ised. nancial plau of work, was 1. Preachers bore the reputation of x Alnenciers, to which thoir lives enti- em, if to nothing olse. trem © ouusideratica of the fineucis! condition of the Church, the spaaker referred to the want of rofigious lifo and energy in the Churel: among pastors and congrogations. Tho Chureh in the Rortuwost, from its nize, wanan ivolated body, which was a terrible barrior agsinat ita dovolopment. Tho moetings now in- augurater would tend to overcome this trouble, and ought to bave been commonced years ago, ‘They would bring tho churches into closer relationa, and tha hearty diw- cussions ~~ that vould = folloy could but promote tho feneral cause, Another nead was a first-claas ‘Theological Inatitute, which contd bo maintained successfully by a anion of the States, if the prejudices and ractioual feolingy could bo buried, for which a $1,000,000 endow. ment would be necossary. Sitch a school would advance the miniatry in education and general fitnegs for tho work, and beside afford parents a moang of giving their children a tighor educa- flon, Tho church momLetship wan amply ablo to found sod maintain such a school, but unless it waa of tho highest possibla typo tho effort wonld prove worse than folly, Such schoat would prove 8 poworful lever in the building up of Uuiverniism, aud would matorally enlance tho idens held ro dear to tho Church. Tho ministry had s work to doin advancing tho roviyal of religion,—not only hy preachiug great moral truths, but in proclaiming tho doctrines of the Church, ‘Tho field was broad, rich, and full of promine, and, if entered into Hoarty, could not fail financially and religiously to yield the grandest results. THE REV, A.C, ¥IBT, of Wisconsin, was the next speaker. Ho did not entirely agreo with the gontioman who had preceded him about tho ostablishing of » Thu- ological school at tho expense of $1,000,000. lio thought the colleges of tho Hast sufficient for tho education of the Church, and, if denominational schools were to bo maintained at all, the Church had all it could carry at present. ‘Most of wuch ecliavin now ox- isting wore loaded with debt, aud he believed the ostablishing of auother would but add to prea- ent embarrassments. Ifo hoped the idea of a collogo in the Northwest would not be seriously entertained. : Te heartily indorsed the Snancial suggestions of Bro, Gorton, and felt alao that it was s torri- ble fact that the Church waa isolated. ‘Tho isola- tion, ho believed, could be botterovercomo, how- over, than by oatablishing aechool, ‘ThoChurch needed 8 Binhop, and mora Goneral Conyentions, which ho thought wonld tend to unify Universalist sacieties. lo thought tho outlook of the Church in tho Northwest was brighter than it over had been. Ilo saw it overywhero growing into recug- yn, nud was eapeclally ploased to know that rival Churches were yielding their projndice, even to allowing their pulpits to bo occupied by Universalist mivisters, THE NEV. B, F. ROGERS, of Codar Rapids, was in favor of tho school sug- Rested, and thonght that tho precoding speaker misundorstood tho proposition. Tho school proposed was not intended to muiti- ply tho numbor, but to increaso their character—to concontrato tho enorgy of tho buureb upon ono, Which suould be the equal of the best in tho country, Moe thought tho finan- cin question ought to be sot apart as = aoparate subject, and that a large portion of the tima of the Convention ought to have beon givon to it, To deprecated church extrayagauco, and urged the adgption of somo fixed and economical plan of financial conduct, and clonod by urging the importanco of zealand unity in thoChurch. THE REY, W. J. CROBSLY, of Urbana, spoke in approval of tho financial ideas advanced, and predicted that, uuleas #ome now scheme was adopted to sustain the Church, it would ovontually suffer. Ho approved these Conferences, and thought thoy ought to ba periodical, aud thats State agent ought to bo appointed to work in the interest of the genoral Church. Io found somo members of the Church doprecating the adoption of any means to advanco the Church employed by sistor Churches, Ho thought this opposition was bo- gotten of prejudice, and if tho Church hoped to be successtul it must spocdily outlive the idea, THE REY, Re Wt. PULLMAN was tho noxt apeaker. Ho bad traveled ovor the Northwest, and regarded the topic undor dis- epevion of the highest importance. Ie P22 novyer seon the Church in a better con- | dition, growing out of tha fact that tho peoplo were waiting to be ted, What wan wanted was lenders, It was truo that 8 fow parishes woro fading out hero and there, but it was uot the failure of Univorsaliem, but of tho leaders of tho Chureh to embrace the opportunities boforo them. Ho believed the Church on tho high way to now victories and richer fielda, Tho Conference then adjourned until 7:30 o'clock, when it waa oxnected that tho Rev. Jomes’ ML. Pallman, of Now York, would proach on “Tho Moral, and Regonorating Power of Universalism.” Word waa ro egived jurnt before adjournment that Br. - fullman was * snowed-in” on his way here, and could not possipiy fill tho engsgoment, The Roy. R. H. Pullman was appointed to fil lus placa. ——— EVENING SESSION. SERMON BY THE NEY. 0H. PULLMAN, Tho attendanco at tho ovoning session was largor than it bad been during the day, Mr. Paliman proached cloquontly on “The Motherly Spirit of the Church.” ‘Tho balance of the sea- sion waa givon to devotional exorcises, ‘Tho Conforeuce will assomblo again this aporn- ing at 1Qo'clock, Tho following order of’ busi- ness will bo observed: Discussion, Topic: “Btato Missionary Work, and How to Do It Speakers: Tho Rov.
