IN NEW YOUK. y A correspondent of the New Orleans Picayume draws a pictare of the real eetate market in New York which cannot be reassuring to the proper- ty-owners of that city, but is entirely in harmony with the statements made Intherto in this col- umn on the best of authority : *‘Tho real estate market has soldom been known to be so depressed as at the proseut time, and many owners of it are being made bankrupts because they do own it. Bome fino buildings up town, which cost §16,000 each to erect, and upon which there were mortgages of 29,000 each, wero knocked off at anction recently for 8,000, or 1,000 less than the mortgage.. Some of the best property in the city is offered at ono-balf its cost, and yet it is not purchased. Those who own real estate say they have enough, and do not care to add thereto; while capitalists who do not own it, and yet have pleaty of money, refase to purchase. “Thoro are elegant honses on the avenue, lately erected, that are Jot for a mere song—simply less than the taxes—simply for the purpose of hav- ing them occupied, as a new house is always bette}' {mé.being used a yoar or two after it is ote * This drag on real estate helps to drag dovn and demoralize everythiog else, and it is tho be- lief that matters will not mend with us in a busi- ness point of viow nntil this dead-lock in real estato has boen broken. It ig difficult to picturo our position. There are cords of monoy, snd et trade is suffering as sevorely a8 if therate of interest was ten times what it is. REAL ESTATE. of the Operations of Review : the Week. Few Transactions, and None of Them Important. ¢ The Loan Market Shows a Little More Activity, Snmmary of Building for Three Months ---Miscellaneous. Real-estate has been quict fhis week. The volume of traneactiops is small, lmd. there are among them none of considerable importanco. There is & great deal of good prnpux:ty. that can be bought quietly at 2 bargnin, butitis a well- marked featurc of the real-estate finances that few purchasers venture on'a falling market, A rase is related of an investor who advertised tnis week for cheap real estzte of & certaln de- scxiption. So much was offered him that he in- zontinently drew in hia horns and decided to wait a while. The belief that purchases can be made in certain localities, like Wabash avenue, to advantage, for long investments, is general among men of meass. * Thoy will no doubt act onit, but as their number is small and their way of operating quiet, the result will not widoly affect the market. Thereis s groat deal said ebout * the prospects,” and here opinions differ 8 widely as inclinations and necessity vary. One of the best known of the veteran citizens of Chi- rago, and one familiar with all the turns of the real estate market, gives it 88 his opinion that if presont causes contmue in oper- aion we ehall -have a brisk o in the spring. A pleasant prediction, and every oo will hope it may come true, But before we rophccy we must know what Congress is going Jo oo with the financial question. + SOME BALES OF THE WEEE. There is a gradual improvement, and loan agents speak in hopeful terms, but the truth is that the improvement is not of such & decisive character 85 to warrant us in painting the immediate fu- ture in roseate hues. The'best that can be said is that the business doing is a8 good and even a littlo better than it hasbeen for some weeks past. The Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Com- pany made a loao of 247,000 secured by a mort-~ £228 on 56x180 feet, enst aide of Dearborn streat between Randolph acd Washington streets, five years’ time, interest 8 per cent; the loan to be expended in buildiug. Provisions wero moderately sctive, though less 80 than on Friday, and easier on the spaculative articles, chiefly in consequence of a decline in the price of live hogs at the Stock-Yards, which, in tura, was the result of warm weather, not of large reccipts. The packing scason opens very slowly, the thermometer giving » longer lease of life to the pigs than the owners counted on. This makes cash product temporarily scarce and strong, but acts the cther way npon options, a3 the hogs have to be killed some timo, and the quantity of prodnct on hand late in the season will probably be larger than if it were moving out now.
