This statement J be regardid-as still more remarisable when it is remembered that the cky.s? of 1873 1ax the business buildings dostrored in_tho firo of 151 moro than Testored, thero being S jarger area of this class of accommodations fnan beforo tho fire. With the exception of yero aad thero & desirablo location, for which ere was & paying demand, comparatively lml_o capital has cought ivestment in business archi- jocture,—that is to say little, compn.r;d "jfih the milhens which -were cxpended during 1872 and 1573. Although tho trade znd commerce of have received largoand important acces- xperienced a steady increase scity of it5 forpisked to fhe city s, and have gince the fire, THE ECPPLY OF DUSINESS STRUCTURES Jas been slightly in excess of the demand, for {he reason that a large portion of tho burnt dis- in tho'South Division, proviously occupied by residences, was abarndoned for that purpose, and given over to be rebuilt with busivess blocks. + At tho commencement of -the preseat year thero was:overy Teason (o anticipate an extreme- Iy dall building season, ‘but bafore the summer ges Lalf over it began to be apparect that the Zullness had been over-cstimated. The fact is— and it is given e tho unanimous judgment of the leading architccts—that this has ‘been by no meane & anil building scason; on the contrary, tiat it has averaged as well as preceding years. - TUE FINANCIAL SIRINGENCY Basnot been without its compensations to Clu- £ago, and it is probablo that to the close condi- Fon of tie money market, a5 much zs to any other cause, the city hos been indebted forits maerial und permancut growth avd advanca- Tact duiing the year. The extremely low prices of building material and Jabor have fully made god the ravages of the panic in the domain of [ilimg. People who wouid not bave found iz oseible to to suit ‘them at tho prices of t year bave mado au oxtra eort «o take ad- sautage of tho more favorable conditions which bave prevailed sinca then. 5 MATERIAL AND LABOE. Here aro gomo of the reascus why building cpuratious havo been Lrisk in Chicago this ason: Brick Lz sold at about §6 . thouswud; ° last year 1t was worth §12 and $18. This year, bricklayers’ Fuges linve been from €8 £0 $3.60 per day ; last ar they were from &4 to S1.50. Carpentersget 210 $2.50, againat 5 to §5.00 1ast year. Plas- fering is f-om 10 to 15 cents per yard cheaper, and rebble-stoue are laid in the wall &4 and &5 per cerd lower then Jast year. The wages of itonecatters have fallen off, thereby chezpening e cost of marble fronts. There hus been » £ depreciation in tho pigher graacs of lum- ber, and » coneidersble reduction in the lower grades, Building hardware i8 irom 5 to 10 per ot lower, -and ‘the ‘priccs of plato- gires, common glees, aund - other house- fuishing materia's Lave undergono abom {he gawe rate of reduction. Peraaps a boiter illustration of the diiferoncs between the cost of building now and then could moi be furnished ti:an to give the words of a leading archiiect: “Thave buile for £6,090 = bandsowe residenco which cozld not bave been put up lest year tor Iess than 10,50, TLZ }O0ST NOTADLE BEDTCTION Iins bean in tho priee of brick, which maynow be satd to bave fairly touched bottom, zad thoy sredn 3 fair way 1o remain ibero for some time to come, rccording to tho calculations of th best qualiicd to judge. ‘I'he reason for the present low price of brick is found in tho fact that Jarge nombers of yards were put in oporation in crder to supply the domand ezeated by the wholesale consumption in the fire of 1671, Prices were extiavsgautly ligh, and 59 préet was the burry to rebuild that auything that the brickmaliers zsked tas paid, rather than lese time in rebuilding. Brick -went np_to 218 per 1,000, end for more than a year soid at an srerage of above §14. At this price thero was mopey 10 the business of producing brick, aud the vast deposits of clay lying close to tho sur- face in the Euburban “parts of the erty sovn gvarmed with brick-yards. Tho relentless Iaw of wopply and demazd in time- seserted it- self, and, 25 the cost of production was greatly reduced by the low rate of wages to_laborers, brick gradually depreciated to their present price.—the lowest, 1t is said, that they can of manufactured for. Brick Lousey, which were formerly a luxury only poesible to people be larze meaus, have now been brought so closely 1o the cost of wooden siructures as to mako it wmestra inducement for_ every oue to build while the prices of _material and lsbor remain titheiriow rate. The consequence has boen the exection of. a larger number of RESIDLSCE BULLDINGS a0 ever before in the bhistorv of Chicago. A Letter from Mr. Periing, T the £iitor of the Clncinnati Commercial : I Liad Loped to haveavoided mabung into pring concerning my domestic troubles, and wounld have much preferred that the public would have learned throngh the medinm of a jndiciat inves- tigation the exact facts concerning the sama, but the quasi-authorized statement of Joseph Clare, which has ‘appeared in thepublic press of this date, demands, in justice to myself and m: friends, that I should break the silence which had determined on maintaining. 1t is unnecessary that I should go into a de- tailed statemont of my early acquaintanco with ber who subscquently became my wife, Suflice it to eay, thar when just vatering upon man- hood, some eight vears sinco, I became entan- gled with Julia A. Snell. I found her after she nad already fallen, became infatuated, and was led on step by step till I married and donght to reclaim her. While'it may be truly said that I have not been immacalate ar faithfol to my marriage vows ; that I have, as most young men are likely to be, been led astray—yet, in extenu- ation, let mo urge that before, ot the tima of, sud after my marriage, sie koow my habite, character, and diaposition, and it was by her kuowledge in this respect that not only did she obtain ber mastery over me, but which, in fact, led to marriago itself. Sines she becamo my wife I have songht by overy mozns in my power, to elevato her social condition, introducing her into the family.circle and weaning bor from the socioty and compane ionship of those who knew her before her re- formation. 1 havo always provided for hor avandautly, and npon this ecore there has never Deen any complaint ; nor has there been any se- tious disturbance between us becaunse of my at- tention to others. M _ It is not neceveary that I shonld at this writ- ing go into tho bistory of the introditction of Jozeph Clare into my Lonasehold, the facts which have alroady appeared in print ate sufficieutly zceurate, nor that I should make a detailed statomeut of all that occurred between us, (my wife, Clare, and mysclf) upon that ill-fated night. Suffice it that Isawand heard ensugh tb con- vince mo. that my wifo had been faithless, snd 0t whom I had introduced hor was acd had been for some time pravions maintainipg ¢rim- inal relations with her. Upon that very night, under my own roof, had they agreed to repeal that which bad so often taken place betwéen them before, wsiting only Zor the child to fall asteep to accomplish their purpose. All this I had overheard myself, and cvon after I had forcad the guilty pair into my presence, no posi- tivo denial was attempted oo the part of either. True, when I mentioned dates of previous cc- currences, Claro would say, * No, not then;” but as to the offanse, rave as to date, no pretansa was made as to tho untruthfalness of the acca- sation. As to my wife, she not oaly then freely confessed to mo her mtimacy with Clare, but has emce repested tho statement to others of the family. And now, lot me ask, What could I have dons under the circumstaucss which thew surroanded me other than I did? Ibad no desire for a scene or & public exposure. 1 simply desired, tor the sake of all parties copcerned, to avoid as much s I possibly could the scandal which would follow. Of course, separation was in- ovitable, and I wished that it might be accom- plished a1 quictly as possible. Therefore it wos arranged, at the urgeut roquest of both my wifo and Clare, that tbey might remain under my . roof uatil the foilowing morning; then she was 1o g0 to her fathor's_home, at Medina, O., and ho was to sea hor eafoly to the tratn, With this plea _agreed upon, left the houso at 6 o'clock in ~the morning. The dreadfal tragedy which followod, the public 18 al- ready acquainted with, It is not my purpoes uow to trace the footsteps of Clare upon the succeedivg - day, nor to correct tho wntruthiul etatements a8 to his movements which have been pat formard by his frionds concerning the same, Such an. inveatigation here ia uncalled for, snd ‘would be out of place. My only desire is to acquaint the public with his councction with the events of that fatal night. And now let mo say emphatically that my transgressions, however unpardonable they may have baon, did not cater into, nor_did they form any part of, the diliculties or quacrels of the night in question, or were thay in any way connccted with the tragedy that followed. Afy only request now is that the community will await the judical investigation which mustin- evitably followw, and thonlet the ax of publio censure fall whera the sworn testimony thus de- veloped shall place it. Cuas. L. Peorina. ‘The Jlassacre by Indians Near Sherie dag, Kan, From the Denver ~News, Oct, 4. The ontrage by Indians near Sheridan is paint= ed by fuller reports in blacker colors. It scems the chitdren were not abducted, as had been gup- posed, but murdered, and thelr little bodies, four 10 number, cruelly maogled, hava been discov- ered by further research. Tho bodies of two udults, in addition to those of.the three beforo digcovered, were also found, feariully mrtilated and; maogled. The fact of this dozen of victims beingsepzrated from those first fonad 14 accounted tor oa the ground thiat they were dragged from where they had originally fallen by wolves, and the bodies, especially those of the childran, all bore traces of tho teeth of their de- ‘vonrers, where the flesh waa not torn entirely off their bones. A company of cavalry, 'which set out from Fort Wallace in pursuit of the marderersas soon asthe newa arnved, havo been scouring the country for the past severzl days, but as yet bavo discovered nothing to indicate sho tribe or where- abouts of the murderers.. They are supposed, however, to have been Cheyennes, as soveral parties of those Inaians have been scen from the trains on the Kansas Pacific more than once during the past week. 3 —_— tmpartiality.
