Tragedy in the Town of Lake, Two Children Déad and One Dying. A Nurse Arrested on Suspi- "cion. Description ot the Sickening Scene. The Post-Mortem Examination Reveals Nothing. The Town of Lake was yestezday the scome of the most appalling tragedy that has ever occurred in that suparb or shocked any com- mupits. The intersection of Trumbull strect and Dissell avenue is marked by a low, squatty, rude, but eat, tenement, in which this morning gloom and mourning are holding high carnival. Darvid Thompson livedin this house, surrounded by tho comforts of & frugal home, and checred by the presence of a wife and four children. Mrs. Thompson, who was but just recover- ing from tho pangs of child birth, has by the shock of the tragedy been thrown into a most precarions condition, and her recovery is s ques- tion of the mercst chance. A woman by the name of S SUSAN BEIRENS, behind the iron gratings of a cell, enconnters the gazo of those who are attracted to the jail either by morbid curiosity or a desire to ascertain her necount of the tragedy, for it is believed that 6ha can explsin the mystery that surronnds it. Ars. Godfrey, who lives in the house ad- joining Thompson's, bas been accustomed to pay aaily visits to Ler neighbor, and offer such sympathy and sssistance as lay in her power, 28 only those who have suffered all but death are able to do. THURSDAY AFTERNOON sbe called on the invalid, snd found her conva~ lescing o rapidly that she anticipated the full re- covery of 3rs. Thompson at an early day, end rejoiced with her at the cheerful prospect. The visit wzs repeated Fridey afternoon, but without her being able to sce her. She tried to effect an entranvo through the back way, and, failing in ber effort, went round to the front door and rapped for admittance. But 0 RESPONSR &8 vouchsafed her calls, and, after remaining & querter of an hour, she concluded that the fam- ily wero alecp, and the nurso out on an errand sonnected with her vocation, and g0 returned to her home. Reflecting on the strange circum- stanco during the night, she felt dissatisfied tliat she had given up the effort to chat awbile with hrs, Thompson, and experienced & fore- Loding that there might ba SOMETHING WROXG . with the family. Acting upon this supposition, sho rerewed her attempt to gain an’ enirance yesterday morning, aud her success was tho means of promulgating this mysterious tragedy. After rapping _at the front door for & brief period, she turmed its knob snd pushed it oped. Tho hotso s composad of o the two rooms, with & small shed attache rear, ueed a8 a kitchen, The main rocmis about tiolve feet square, sparsoly but decently fui- nished, and is used a8 the living-room of the aftticted family. Half way from either side, and looking toward the west, & door opens into a close, smali, contracted sleeping apartment, feted with the odors of sickness and foul-air. THE BCENE. When Mrs. Godfrey bad pushed the door ajar, the first object that presented itself to her pstouished =ight was the figure of Suean Behrens, standing mute and motionless in tho middle of the main_room, looking the very image of imbecility induced by madness or Jiquor. Horrified at {hie spectaclo she approach- cd the appatently ibanimate woman, snd de- manded ** What in God's name is the matter?” ‘The nurse rolled her eyes, and a meamngloss smulo lighted up her foce for an instaut, when ¢he relapsed into the semi-idiotic condition she mamtained when first seen. The visitor repeated her interrogatory, prompted by a feeling of un- defined terror, and with such emphasis that the witness for an instant became conscious, aud, in brolen mutterings, informed her that THE BADE WAS DEAD. Mre. Goafry waited to Lear no more, but hestened totho dark, uninviting quartersoccupied by the sick woman. She bad only reached tho threshiiold of the room, when she stumbled sgainst some innimato objoct that checked her further movements, and sent a chill of horror through her. She stooped to examine what it was, and discovered the body of THE ELDEST CHILD, Nettie Thompson, pulscless and stiff in the em- bizce of death. The mother, who badbeen aroused by the commotion, awoke to the pres- once of some one in the room, and in 3 faint, sickly voico begged that her visitor would givo her a cup of cold water and s small quontity of wine, which had been pro- cured during her sickness, Having sdministered to the wants of the afilicted woman, the bumazc visitor burried out into the street, procared the sssistunce of two neighbors, and, with Mirs. Baker snd Mrs. Gibbons, returned to the reliaf of the dying. e The lifelcss form of little Nettie was raised from the floor and placed on a tablein tie room. nd, ater laying it ont, they turned - thieir atten- ton'to the living mother. : THE OTHEE. She was found on the bed, from which ghe had attempted to rise, and hed succeeded in reaching the bare floor with her feet, when her streugth failed and she fainted quite away, Hereyeswere vlosed, her skin cold, her }imbs motionless, and 1t was only by ber irregular breathing, which was interrupted by spasmodic gzsps, that she gave token of life. The Samaritans bent them- selves to the task of reviving the seemingly dy- ing womanp, and for a time it was Goubtfn] if their attempt would be crowned with success. But the irregular breathing became more regu- lar, tae gsping cozaed, and the witnesses were encouraged when ehe, in response to their com- bined efforts, became more lifelike, and finally resumed consciousness. She opened her eyes, and, in a strange, faint, pitiful voice, lamented Ler condition. Sho was made as comfortable as circumstances would admit, and search was 'made for the rest of the family. The visitors on removing & pillow from the bed, had revealed to them A SECOND CHILD, be, too, sleeping the sleep of death. They had by this tims ceased to wonder as oach horrible fact developed itself, but with nerve and cour- age, devoid of callousness, continued their search, ufter placing Jimmioon the rough deal table, by tho dead body of hissister. Atthe front of the bed, iyiug crosswise, with his head to the wall and his feet protruding beyond the outside, A THIRD MEMBER of the family was found, moaning, and to all intents in the last agonics of disso- lution. A chair bad stood iu a re- mote cormer of the room, sand in the nosence of Mrs. Godlry in search of help, it had by some unaccountable means been moved to ths side of the bed, a few inches distant from wiich it remained. Between this chair and the bed, wedged in and held by a grasp that required the strength of the strong, healthy woman who discovered it Lo remove, they found tue babe. When it was recovered from the critical position in which it bad been placed, it kont up & wail of grief which tem- posarily aroused the mother, who inco- herenty sought sympathy for her desolate and afiticted condition. ~ But the tender arms of those who were present bore it into the air, and -by the kind means, which only a woman's love #can invent, soon soothed it into quiet, and it “was befo,6 long chuckling aud crowing in- Docently, and happily iguorant of the calamity that afiiicted the housrhold. But the mysterious causes that bad killex two mormbers of that family had released their grasp only temporarily, and returned to scal the fate of the baby. The jury, fo be empaneled to-morrow, will be doubtless called upon to include its death in the vordict, as also that of the mother, for her recovery is next to impossibie. THE NUBSE. The lunatic, or drunken mid-wife, during the . progress of the events above narrated, remained motiontess, gaziug into vacancy, making no ef- fort to escape, nor_ attempt toaid in the work of resuscitating the living or removing the dead. Sha is 3 German woman about 40 years of age, residing at the corner of Burnside and Thirty- eighth streets, and had been employed by tho family about a week. She was employed by Mre. Thompson in the capacity of & nurse, acting un- wrs. Beano, Rouse, and_Dodge, on being 8 plicd to, hurried to the house and dld all thet Jay in their power to ¥e- licvo the distresscl mother and dying boy. Bat their skill, supposed, will bo ox- ertedin vein, a8 there is hardly a chance for their recovery. TOE HUSDAND is from the Norih of Ireland, andisin compar- stively easy circumstances, owning the propercy on which bis house i8 builf, whichis of no_in- coneiderable value. Heis a moulder, and has, until within a ehort time, been employed at a foundry in his neighborhood; but the sstab- lishment was closed early in tho winter, aud he was obliged to seek odd “jobs, which frequently detained him from home, except at occasional intervals. He was last scen at his houss Thurs- dsy morning, when Le went to Lis work, somewhere in the lower part of the city, de- signing to return home last night. One can, hardly imagine the exqusite grief that over- whelmed him when he wae informed of tho calamity that had overtaken his household, nor with what feelings he returncd to a family ho bad left but a few hours beforo, to find two of them dead, and the remainder fast following in their footsteps. One could rarely seo a moro melancholy spectacle thau that exhibited to the sight of those who are called npon to visit the locality. The dead brother sleeps beside the corpse Of his elder rister, and the pall hides from view the two forms, composed for the tomb, their- hands folded on their bressts, the eyes dglnsay, exprecsionless, sunken, and dis- torted. THECAUSE is not fully ascertained ; rome belicve it to have resulted from asphyxia. but the statement that there was no fire in the stove during Friday goes far toward disproving this theory. Others azo of opinion that it is case of poisoning, and regard the purse as guilty of the crime. It is reported that the mother of Mrs, Thompson Jisited the family Thuradsy, and distributed a large amount of candy amonfs the children, but it is hardly probable that this could have pro- duced a fatal result. Tho woman Behrens was arrested, and will be held to await the verdict of the Coroner's 7ury Dr. Henrohin, Counsy Physician, assisted by Dr. Beaue, made & TOST MORTEM EXAMINATION of the deceased last night with the following re- sult : Upon openivg tho bodies they noticed the tisenes had o bright red appearance. The lungs were studded with bright red spots, minute in wizé. Otherwise they were pertectly normal. ‘Tho liver, heart, brain, and kidneys were nor- mal. The stomach aud iutestines contained but little ; they were bright red, and evidently some- what inflamed, especially that of the boy. Thero were no signs indicating the exact cause of desth. The stomach and other por- tion of the body which are necessary. were taken poseession of by Dr. Heorotin for chemical analysis and microscopic examination. The third child, Willie, was dying at 10 o'clock, [ snd the mother, though in no immediate dan- ' ger, was not in her right mind. She says ths chifdren were sick during the night, 2nd sho pat them allin her bed. She does not believe them to bedead. All liquids that are knmown to have been administered to tho children swere removed from the house and retained by the physiciau, ‘The Coroner may throw some light on this mys- tery at TRE INQUEST, 0 bo held to-morrow, the result of which will be looked for Ly the public impatiently. Tme TRisuNE reporter desires to acknowledge his in- debtedness to Mathew Fleming for his courteous aseistance in ascertaining the facts. MARRIAGES.
