THE CHICAGO 'DATLY. TRIBUNE FRIDAY, JANUARY S A A A A R A o ————————.. . ———————— T ¥ TNy MONEY AND COMMERCE. MONETARY. TuURsSDAY EVENING, J2D, 22 Very little change in the local money market 18 noticeable yet, In New York and throughout the country the supply of money ssems to be in- creasing, but the accumulation of grain and pork in this market absorbs so much local capitsl that money is less plenty bere just at present than in alnost any other city. The general abundance of funds, however, in other places, prevents positive stringency here. New York exchange sold at 50 cents per $1,000 discorn t to-dey. There iz very little currency going to the €OUNIry NOwW. . THE MECEANICS' NATIONAL. As was indicated in this column this morning would be the case, the Chicago Clesring-House Association met this afternoon, to consider the cass of the Mechanics’ National Bank. No defi- nite action, bowever, was taken, aud this leaves the Association in precisely the attitude toward tbe bank which it tovk day before vesterday, viz. : that it recommends the Mecheanics' National to withdraw from the Clearing-House. . CURRENCY INFLATION. There is reason to belleve that the House of Representatives will pass. by a large majority, thet portion of the Ways and Means Committee's bill to suthorize the 18s5ue of the whole ** $44,- 000,000 reserve” of greenbacks, and, while it ia believed there is & majority in tho Senate ainst icflation, to auy considerabls extent, it is probaole the Senate will eo far concede the popular demsnd for more carrency as 0 pass euch a bul. It seems, thaiefore, pretty certain that, if this ome roposition of author- izng tbe issue of the $14,000,000 can be presented to Congress un- incumbered with any other provisions, 1t would puss. Already , 27,000,000 out of the £44.000,000 have Leen put out, leaving only £17,000,000 more of iufiation to come out yet. In che present temper of the people it would be Impossibie to get auy measure through Congress for the retirewent of the $44,000,000 additioual greenbacks, and it may be accepted as a foregoue 2onclusiou that the contraction made by Secre- wary McCullough several years ago will be res sanded by the reissue of the greenbacks. It seems hiardly probaule that auy more inflation of greenbacks than this will be secured. Dut the juestion of withdrawing $25,00,000 of National Bank currency from banks in the Esstern States, to distibute it among benks in the West and South, is pending still. The Eastern opposition to this withdiawal of ban! Ing prvileges is €0 stroag that, togother with the demand for more currency, it wiil probably result in the repeal of the restriction on the s gregate smount of National Bunk circafation. It is doubtful, however, if {ree banking would satisfy the intlationists. Notwithstanding that their great aigument 1s that the country needs more currency, i: is really an expansion of tue Govelument «redit, 8a increase of the Puhuc aebt, a depreciauon of the Governmeut egal-tender notes, an advance i the price of gold, that they desire. There are thousauds of debiors now who cannot see their nay clear of Lankruptcy uniess there 18 8 nominal iucrease in the value of their property by reason of the iu- flation ; or, in other worda, they canuot puy un- less the valae'of their debts is first diminished by the depreciation of the legai-tender potes of the United States. No increase of National Bonk notes will accomplish this unless accowmpa- uied oy an increase of greeubacks. TIE TRADE DOLLAR. ‘We clip the followiug from the Japan Mail of Dec. 8: “A recent number of the Hongkong Govern- ment Gaztle has declared the nuw American trade doliar a legal-tender in the colouy, aud & proclamation by tue Goveinor-Geueral of the two Qusogs has been issued in Canton giviug the particulars of an ofiicial assay of the coin, and establislung ita currency throughout those Provinces, “It is, of courss, & question how far the power of the Shroffs will be used to impede the 1ree circulation of the new coin, but it is so easy for them to turn occasions of this nature into sources of .profit, that the chances are iu favor of the success of the measure.” LOCAL STOCK AND BOND MARKET. The leading prodnce markets were gonerally lower to-day, barley and wheat being the prin: cipal esceptions. There was, however, more doing in most departments, the result of prop- erty being offered more liberally by bolders. The trading was chuefly speculative, tho shipping movement being light. The contioued muddy westher is dimimnishing the volume of receipls; which fact teuds to prevent s break in prices. There was far activity in the demand for domestic dry goods, and also a fair movement in impoted fubrics. Prices were again quoted firm. The grocery trade was reasouably active at generally firm prices. Sugars still show s lack of strevgth, but for all otber articles enum- erated in our List the feeling was decidedly firm. Coffees’ were marked up mnother igc, Mocha now being quoted at 45@46c; 0. G. Java at 3U¢@4Uc ; and fancy Rio at $43¢@343¢c. Cloves coutinue to advauce, aud are now beld at 5@ £sc. Anadvauce of 3¢ in pulmegs wus also voted. Thero was av active demaund for butter at an advance of 1@%. Cheese was quiet sud firmer. No change was noted 1u prices of dried truts, though in some descriptions the tendency was upward. Fuh were in good request st generally firm prices. White~ fish and trout were up 10@l5c per b5 Uil Coal remaius dull at $8.00 tor Lackawauna, $8.00@8.50 for Erie. $7.00 for Indiana block, 2nd at £5 00 for Wilmington. Carbon was suonger, in sywpathy with the Eusstern market. No changesof importance occurred ic the lum- ber market. The order trade continues fair, thongh the unpleasant westber will probably restrict business somewhat ; but the market 18 1eported stesdy at $12.00 for common lumber aud £38.25 for shingles on track. Metals, babs, and iron were unchangell.' The firmuess of tuese markets heretofore’ noted continues, and many materials, noticeably tin plate aad pails, aro likely to advauce soou, All bLuildng materias, such as bnck, lime, eic., were quiet. Common brick are held with more firmuess by many dealers, who anucipate an active aemand eaily in the spring, while the stocks are light and, it is thought, may be exbausted Lefore new can be made. The mild weather cansed shippers to hold back, and the bewt bids were st a dechine of 10@20c per 100 1bs, at §6.05@6.15. Holders were not willing to goil at theso tgures. demanding $6,20@6.25, and preferred to keep.their |Toperty till to-morrow 1a.her than male the concession. The ouly salo reported was 18 culls at £€5.85 per 100 Ibs. Provirions were moderately active, but weak. Mers pork declined 20c per brl; lard 10¢ per 100 15 ; and meats were a ehade easier, though not wealened like the speculative articles. Tue market was & shade firmer at the extreme close. The markets at other points were depressed, and for the same reason that existed here—the pres- sure of cousiderable quantities on eale, with few buyers. The market or live hogs exhibited no d-cided chauge, though the weather wus up, fzvosatle for handling products. Liverpool was rumored to be 18 bigber on lard, but operators did not seem to belteve it. Porm is n large stock, here and elcewbere, having been manu- faciured in extraordinarily large quantiues to meet an unusval speculaiive demaud. Besides, there are rumors to the effect that not a Lttie of onr pork Lias been scaled pretty low; and Cana- dian buyers are willing to pay more for Cin- cinpati pork, in consequence. This leaves little but the speculauve demand to Lsa- dle our pork, sud that is wnot adequato to carrying it over March, most of tne option purchases haviug been onginally made for February, in the belicf thut the greatest bulge would occur before that time. A great deal of the pork bhas recentiy been turned over into March; bLutitisstill lLere. and;operators outside of the S.ock-Yards are not »0 Buxious to carry it a8 heretofore. Lard is_confeasealy in hghbt stock; but the demand is also small, the low price of pewoleum inducing & large con- sumption of that oil for purposes which have Leretofcre been supphied by drafis on the lard tierce. Meats are inbmallstock, and tue depres- sion in rail treights is an inducement to take hold, but our ity yieid is just now being com- peted with by lurgé guautizies of counry pro- duct, sud the feeling is *nmot helped by whe anxiety of holders of pork aud lard to place their property in other hands. Liverpool was quoted lower, and buyers’ Leld off in N York, which depressed the tone here, but with- ont caasing sny break, The fact seems to be that the chronic short sellers lost 80 much on the rise since the panic a8 to have become nn- usuelly cautious; bLence they offered to scll much more sparingly than usual, and buyeis had more confidence for that reason, notwith- standing the weak tone elsewhere, es;ecially as our receipts were light, owirg to the weather, 2ud our sbipments respectable in vorume. Taera was no shippivg dewand of consequence, and yeucash wheat ndvanced .more than options. The reason for this was that there was more capital on_the market, prepared to buy cash wheat sgainst options sold for future Geliveyy. The preseut weakening in Europe is undoubted- 1y due to the facs that the very Liberal cousign- ments rocently mede from this continent, sre now in sight, and buyers oro less disposed to take bold till the available volume of grain is somewhat reduced ; especially as the adoption of the cousersative policy will probably enable them to buy to bettor advantage bye and_ bye.
