TR AR N SR e e (msmw&mmmzmmimmmnfm RIS i 3 THE CHICAGO "DAILY - TRIBUNE: -SUNDAY; JANUARY ‘18, 1871 B O PN PR Lo s st b e G e s S e i A el st Sl U e PR T P . ‘REAL ESTATE. good Deal of Negotiating, but Tittle Accomplished, A Better Supply of Ioney on, Tiortgages. seme Imporiant Sales of Business and Residence Property Lately, Building in Suburban Guarters. Activity of " here bas been but liétle accomplished in tho {ast week in the w3y of eales. Itis difficult o’ 3gn LY special reason for this, as thera is » +desl of negoiiating, & great many:offers b e made; aud tho recd estate brokers huvemore thsa tho usual number of memoranda of wyants” on their books. The eeverity of the westher forsevoral deys this wesk, and tho stringency of the money markef, have bath [ probably’ exercised some influence to Soter fthe consummation of eales and check business, From time fo time we Desr of gales made at some rodnction on thoe “ccs st which the property was kold last spring, sod it is probable that for some time yet parties whoee affeirs were deranged by the panic will be obliged to sell property for cash, at some reduc- tion on former values. But in a few months ihess will all be sifted ont, and, as nobody has soy donbt about tho commercial prosperity of fhe city, and there is no reason why they shonld psve any about the future value of the real estste, theso forced enles will cerse. MONEY ON MORTGAGES. e pote that the suppiy of money to loan on mortgages is increasing. One prominent firm of loan agents eay that they have funds offered {otake mortgages to an aggregate of about £200,000, if satisfactory property almost any- whers inside the city limits is offered. The raling rate now on all mortgage loans is 10 per cent. On sums under £3,000 higher rates are id in many ipstances, but for loans over £,000, and for periods of five years and up- * vard, the supply of money is Eo good that it is possible some concession on rates will be made when tho commercial market eases up again, as ibis likely to do within & week or two. . From tume to time the papers of the neigh- boring cities—as, for instance, those of St. Louis Iately—make a great fuss over the fack {bst Chicego property is heavily mortgaged, and ictimate that it is significant of some dire event —vo don't know what, and doubt if they do—that isto fall upon our real estate intercsts. If it is a fact that Chicago real estato is more besvily mortgsged thau that of other Western diies, we (Mnl its only significance is, that = capitalists both in this city and elsewhere sre more willing to lend money on Chicago rea 1 estute than on property in other cities, because_they beliove it will increase in Taloe more rapidly, and is thoreforo better ge- cority. As far as the commercial prosperity of {te ¢ty is concerned, and tho consequent owth in wealth and population, it would make g:fi little differenco whether the bulk of these nortgages wero held by capitalists of other cities or not. If they are held by Eastern cap- iialiste, it is at least a pledge that they, having sn interest in the prosperity of the city, will say and do what they can to increase it, the same as they wonld if their permunent residence was bere. THE ANDERSON HOTEL property on_the morth side of ifadison street, Jost east of LaSalie, bas been sold by Mr. James £ Tyler to Mr. Harvey M. Thompson. -The negotiations bave now becn just about_closed ) though the pepers will bear date of Jan. 1. o property 1 3 fve-story building, which covers the lot, €0x177, tho lot baing held un- Ger a lease which Lins et 034 vears to run., The fries at which the property is trausferred i ibout £150,000, of which a part was cash and the balance in other city property. The build- ing is now bringing in & rentsl of £30,000 ampam. We have not learned snpual | ground rent under the Jesse, but only know that ehortly after the fire of October, 1671, before any of the property in ihat vicipity was rebuilt, a bonus of £40,000 was offered for the lease. When the present build- ing wes erected, it was expected that the Open Board of Trade wonld occupy the rear half of $he first floor, as the rear entranco is only across Exchange place from the Chamber-of-Commerce Building; but for some reason the Open Board never oecupied the room prepared for them. and ¢ is pow occupied for a Lilliard hall. While this 18 a transfer of oneof the most valuable ard central pisces of property in tke city, the fignres do noi furnich much information as to the mar- ket-value of ihe fee of the properiy. Butif the building be valzed at $125,009, the rental would indicate a va'ue of about 100 per square foot for the ground. MICHIGAN AVENLE property south of tue limits scems to be sitraciiog more attention than aimost any othier residence’ property in the southern saburbs. Everybocy seews to understand that in view of ths extension of tho first-class rosidence quarter ecuthward along this avenue, it ia the chespest firet-class property in that part of the cifr. A week sgo we mentioned the sale of a S0-oot lot, between Forty-first and Forty-second eireets, o price equivalent to $125 per foot in cach. Mr.Ira Holmes has recently sold 200 feet on AMichigan avenue, between Forty-first w1 Fortr-seccnd 8 racte, for $84,000, and we hesrof an offer of $100 per foot all cash for 100 fect, east froat, between Forty-second and Forty-t streets, which was refused. THE OTHER AVENUES. Mr. Ira Holmes rold somo weeks ago 100 feet, winsr of Indiana svenue and “Thirty-ninth greet, without improvemeants, for §20,000. Also 100 feet on Indizna avenue, east front, betweon Thirty-ninth and Forticth streets, for $12,700. Statement of a Former Attendant As to the Way In Which It Yas Cons ducted.. . " o Attention has besn repeatedly called to the fact that a larger percentage of small-pox patients dio within the hospital than of thoso who are treated outside, and who receive private medical advice. 1t is difficult to understand why this ehould be so, since in other large cities, especially in . Europe, the reverse is tho case. There, under the supervision .of the best med- ical talent, and surrounded by modorn hygienic improvements, tho small-pox patient fares much better than if left to private treatmeat. To ascertain oma of the causes which have placed our smell-pox hospital into such an un- favorable light, a reporter was directed to inves- tigate the matter. In his search he came across o woman who had been employed in the hospi- tal, and the following conversation took place: Reporter—When were you employed in the emall-pox hospital ? Mrs. A.—In 1873. Reporter—How long were you thore ? Mrs. A.—After I had been there as a patient about two weeks, I was engaged to act first 18 a washerwoman, afterwards s cook at $16 per month, in which capacity I served four months. - Reporter—Wero you discharged ? Mrs. A.—No, sir, I left of my own accord, bo- Nov. 1,187 ; cause I could not stand it to look at the way patients were treated. . TReporter—How were the patients treated ? Mrs. A.—Very badly. When I first entered the hospital tho etarving look of the patients startled me. After I got to bo cook they all complained to mo of not having emough to satisfy their hunger. Reporter—What kind and what quality of food aid the patients receive? 5 Ars. A.—The fond, as a general thing, was very bad. The soup was like water. aud the meat, when given, was in most cases tainted. Reporter—What kind of bread did the patients get, and did they receive enough of it ? Mrs, A.—The bread was good, and after I gob to be cook, I gave them all they wanted, for I had the distribution of it. Reporter—How were the patients- treated by their nurses ? - Mrs. A.—I can spesk only of the wards where the femala patients wero. Theso were Lreated very harshly. The Steward, especially, was very croas with them. = Reporter—Did & physician visit daily tho spartments you had access to ? Mrs. A.—No, sir. Sometimes one wouid come every other day, and sometimes not as ofien. Roporter—What did he do when you #aw him in the wards? Mrs. A—He wonld hurry through tho wards at & quick pace, and not remein within the room at any one time over ten minutes. “Roporter—When you were there aa.a pationt did he examine you carefally ? Mre. A—No, sir. He did not even examine my pulse. Reporter—Do you know of auy case whers & patient died from lack of medical treatment ? Ars. A.—I cannot say from my own Lnowl- edge, but I have heard of cases. Reporter—as the hospital kept clesn ? Mrs. A—Not at all, sir. It was very dirty,—I mesn the women's ward. After a paticnt was put into a bed tho shests were nover changed until she was either put into a coffin or dis- charged a8 curod. Thero were no baths, and all the patients were wallowing in dirt. Teporter—Do you knosw of any cases whero patients hnd money taken from them while in the hospital, or when dismissed ? Mrs. A.—Yes sir. .I know of several. R.—Tell me of one. .. Mrs. A.—1I know of a Bwedish woman who, on leaving the hospital, had $9—all the monsy she posspsged—taken from her by an officer under the plea that it was for the support of tha hospi- tal. . R.—Did you have ansthing taken from you ? Mrs, A.—No, sir. In the first place, when I loft I wasnot & patient. In. tho next place, I 1ad no money to be taken from me. The reporter next called upon & well-known physician, with the intention of eliaiting some more information in regard to this case, and to ask his opinion about the truth of the sbove statements. ~He admitted that he had heard tho same stories, but could not tell from personal koowledge. He only kmew one fact from personal knowledge, and that was that » great many more patients died within the small-pox hospital than therc should if proper- ly treated. He bai heard that the visiting physicians hed tho deliricus patienta locked up 108 room by themaclves, where they were left to rave, tear, snd scratch themselves to death, thongh that was the most cntical timo, when & patient should be well taken care of; it wss the time when the scabs formed, snd the patient became delirious. He further 8aid that if only half of what had been told of the small- hospital were true, barbarism itself would Bhash to contemplato it, An instance was relat- ed to him vwhere & man was rolled up in his shroud while in & half dyiog condition. Theso statements, however true they may be, apply only to the old management of the hospi- tal, and not to the wayin which it has been con- ducted during the last three months. INSTRUCTION.
