THE PAPER FOR THE FARMER, MECHANIC, MANUFACTURER, HERCHANT, BANKER, PROFESSIONAL MAN, AND THE FIRESIDE. PROSPECTUS FOR 1874. The ‘coming year promises to be , the most eventfulin a political sense that we havo seen since the close of the war. The questions which have sngrossed and divided tho public mind during tho past twenty years are rapidly passing away, and wo ind growing up in different parts of the country & party called by vari- ous names---in California tho Inde- pendent party, in-Iowa tho Anti- Monopoly party, in Wisconsin the Reform party, in Illinois tho Farmers’ Movemont---having & com- mon p ose and inspiration, and exhibitifig a strength which proves that it answors one of the chief de- mands of the hour. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE will give a large share of its attention to this NEW MAN- IFESTATION OF PUBLIC SENTI- MENT. It‘holds: 1st. That the old party organiza- tions aro essontislly corrupt and fraudulent. Having no longer any principles to carry into effect, they have become mere business onter- prises, meking a show of opposition to each other, but really shering in the proceeds-of profligate and dis- honast legislation. To supposeo that any healthful reform can flow from the pretended efforts of these worn- out and demoralized partnerships Is altogether vain and illusory. 2d. That the teriff system now in vogue is & cunning dovice to rob the many for the benofit of the fow, and that its efféct is to cause farm pro- fuoets to exchange for about one-half the quantity of forcign or ¢ pro- tected” goods they would otherwise uy. 3d. That railroads cannot exact more than a fair rate of interest on ‘he capital actually investod in them, and that when, in addition to this, they olaim dividends on watered stock and fraudulent bonds, the State may rightfully interfere for the protection of the people ; thatunjust disoriminations botween different localities are in violation of law and 1hould be prohibitod. 4th. That subsidies or bounties of -money, land, or public credit, to railway, steamship, or other corpo- rations, are flagrant abuses of the powers of government, fraught with the gravest dangers ‘to the peoplo, and tending to promote corruption, pxtravagance, speculation, and Brancial disaster. The general character of THE CUHICAGO TRIBUNE is too well pstablished to need recapitulation. It is alweys independent and fear- less in the expression of its views. In its news department it is second to no paper in the United States. The Weelkly Edition contains a care~ fully prepared summary of the news of the woelk, brought down to the hour of going to press. Literary,- political, financinl, s0- oial, and agricultural topios will constitute, as herectofore, leading features of tho Wooekly Edition, and no paing will be spared to increase its attractiveness in these depart- ments. Its rharket reports are un- surpasged, ombracing all the infor- maticn which farmers require for the intelligent transaction of busi- ness, both as sellers and buyers. THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE is o large eight-page sheot, of the same size a8 the Daily Tribune, consisting of fifty-six columns of closely- printed mattor, and, as o family newspaper and in ita general make- up, i8 unsurpassed by any paper in: the land.
