WEST VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND, A Sketch of the Alleghany ‘Wilds. Down the Yough==The Upper and the Lower Falls. The Story of Tom Winans--Tom Swann and’ Pinkney ‘Whyte. From Our Owen Correspondent. Ot Riven Countny, W, Va,, Sopt. 26, 1870, MOUNTAIN ARTISTS, Bon/ag and many of tho landscapo-artinta hayopainted up the Ohoat Iivor Countiy, and olhers intond to vislt it. Soning was once mia- takou by Frank Thomas for an interviower, and dnvon off his track with a shot-gun, Thomns Iad been Governor of Maryland, but political md domestio contrariotios oxpdiled him to the mountains, whers ho lived in a log-hut, near Bavage River, with only a nogro-cook. 1io was the Mountain Sam Houston, forvid in oratory, deop in resontmont, and bo revived his caroor ond ennoblod it by leading tho mountaincor sontiment for tho Union in 1861, Sontng waa interosted in his story, and wag skolahing his bt and porson, whon tho old man got bis shot~ gun and demned him off the glades. Thus Bon- tag is tho ouly man who has been interviowed with a shot-gun, Swallow Falls, n spot nlmoat uuknown, is ono of Sontag's slkotohos. Tho rido from Oakland to BWALLOW FALLS (8 miles) traverses a boautiful Lill and glado country, 'The beat path for oquostrinns s west of the Big Yough, although tho road for toams, which is none of the best, passes cast of the Yough, under tho mountein ealled Roman Noso, Ialf-way to Swallow Falls there is o yole or great bend of tho Yough, and hero tho equesirinn path through the glades roturns to the wagous rond, laviug crossod two considorable glado- strenmo; tho Yough in forded st tho plnco of mocting. A milo south of tho ford is tho place nemed * Amorfcan Stock Farm,” . gonorally known beroabout ag ‘“ THE EXOLISTMEN'S PLACE.” It I the creation of & colony of young English Inds, of good families nnd abuudant prospeots at homo, who, voluniarily chose Amer- ien ond tho indopendent lifoe of Re- R"bnm yeomanry for residence and career. Ir. Droad led tho way, aud purchased 500 neres, for §10 por nero, from John W, Garrott, Exq., by whoso advico the glades of Maryland wore solected. Mr, Broad was joined by Mr. Willink, of Liverpool, the sccond yoar (1872), and Messra, Ford and Bushby, of Chestor mig Dovoushire, camo: ovor in 1873, Good barns, stock-sheds, and a comfortnblo dwelling wers erected; almost without nasistance, thoso youn men clenved oft tho timber and thickets, fouce the upland flolds, tiled and_ ditched tho glade in o manner now to theso parts, and, at tho time of my visit, had oponed in tho wilds of the Yough iho rudiments of o profitablo and _beautiful cs- tato. Interaturo, bosing-gloves, fire-arms, and tho arcana of young Lingland wero portions of this rustic retreat, Theirs is tho only habitation —two log huts_cxcopted—botwoon Onkluud and Muddy Creek Falla. DOWN THE YOCK. Tho onk-groves givo way, as we approach Tol- Jiver's Run, to tall and statoly pincs, and the steep path down to the Yough is turfed with sofs moss, and flanked by laurol, ;:rul)u-vinu, end rhododondrou (mugnolia?). Gigantic rocks also appear, strown along the teep ecarp, rent from. Bome mountain-wall, apparently, and cast up on tho sides of tho river, ThoYoughis, in summer, & stream of pools, eddics, shullows, and dry rock, which a horsoman can ngcond, and for somo long stretches lio can drivo a wigon in tho river bed; in spring, and after rains, it is o torront, raiscd 10 feet, and even more, above its summor- level. High banks, rock-strewn, and rrucipitouu heights of fir, shut in tho aisloof black water, Doulders, and fonm ; the margin is inclosed with 1aurel and magnolia, With occosional mountain- ash pushing through and havging its insecls over tho strenm ; A gulf of black light,” somo Lave called the river on firet viow. The Yough, near the Upper Fall, passes under a rough bridge, sud is soon after drawn between 8 pair of rocky slabs ; after which it flaws ovor an_apron, or hulf-domo, of uaked limostono- rock, parting it a sheet of foam on sither sido. The fall hore is about 80 feot, and tho breadth of surfaco wet by the riverin dry weather is about 40 feot ; this is nx{muau.d, in rainy timee, to o running cataract, filled with tors and drift, quite hiding all barriors and obutacles, Below thie Upper Fall,—whose are is couvex, and can- not thereforo bo tho true Swallow Full,—is singulurly-bold precipica of detached rack, with a ehclf or tablo overlooking the pool, and beau- tifully ndorned with ferus and mosses ; thiy in aboui 40 feot high, Further down, on tho othior gide, aro soms bold forms of_ fallen rock ; balow which tho river is received into n spreading snlver or bnsin, of comparatively still waler, and a rim of flat rocks nearly lovel with tho current. Just off this placo thero is n circwlar arbor tramplod ont of the Inurel for the uee of picnic partics, with n cool pring at tho water's adge, About 300 feat below tlie Uppor Fall, pud with o descent of about 10 feet of rapid and curront botween, occurs the second or true Swallow Fall, Inferior ne to height, but a truer cascado, with o clear full ovor the coucave rim of a ahelf of recessed rocks, with a chord of about 80 feot, aud a periphery, conscquently, of above 100 feot. This fall is 10 or 12 feat high st low wator. Below the Lowor Fall in.a cavo about 40 fect deep, dry at low water. A fow roda off, Muddy Creel falls into the Yock with ono tremondous leup of 70 feot and stronming rapids ; and, o milo further down, Deop Creek oxecutes the samo foat in o slriking caseade. THE RECLAMATION OF THE ALLEGIANY WILDB In West Virginia in n necesaity in the forerround, Coal is too deur, travsporintion too insuiliciont, to permit tho groat coal-ficld from tlie National Rond to Staunton and Charleston tolie void, Tor 200 yours thore are deposits suflicient in that blanlk epot to eupply ail the chimnoys, gas-ro- torts, and steamships cost of Lake Erio and tho Miselesippi, _No conl-ficld s 8o central to all parts of tho North, Fast, and South.
