Ench aucceeding day bringa its signs of im- provement in groater abundance than did the dny beforo, yesterday boing particularly notico- ablo in this respect. TuE TRIBUNE roporters who have watchod the banks and interviewed tho banltors sinco tho beginning of trouble, a fortnight since, were surprised yosterday by tho goneral air of business which provailed at almost sll tho banking institutions, At tho busy hours of tho bankiny day, many of the leading insti- tutiona were filled with customers, whoso atten- tion, not a8 a fortnight since directed sololy to tho paying-tellor, were protty equally divided among President, Cashior, and subordinate ofil- cors, It was vory evident that both thoy and tho benkers meant business. The latter, in re- sponso to tho roporter’s interrogations, ex- presgod themsolves as very well ploased with the condition in which they found themselves nftor thoir protracted struggle. In view of tho fact thiat during the carlier half of tho month the bulk of commorcial paper, ospecially of tho ac- commodation doscription, matures, the bankers woro especially interrogated as to what course would bo pursued. The following conversation, had with s leading banker, will show that tho bankers are doing the best they can to bring mattors to a happy issue: NOTES FALLING DUE. Reporter—I boliovo, sir, that during tho eatlior part of tho month tho number of notes dis- counted maturing is always much greater than townrd the latter half of the month? Bankor—It is invariably so. Roporter—Then, at tho presont time the strain upon the commercial community must bo much greator than it was a weok ago ? Banker—This month is uot an exception to the general rulo you have alroady mentioned, though I may eay that October is always a light month for payments. CONCESSIONS TO OUSTOMERS. Roportor—I supposo that the banks aro necessarily, under oxisting cireumstances, con- strained to make many concessions to custom- era whoso papor matures? Banker—The bankers are doing sll in thejr poswor to help tho customora. Roporter—Is it not a fact that in the earliest part of the month a quantity of what is known a8 accommodation papor matures ? Banker—It is. Roporter—What will be dono with paper of this description? ‘Banker—}fuoh of it will bo duly met, the mak-~ ers having for somo timo past given their atten~ tion to procuring the necossary funds to do so, ‘What littlo of it Is not paid will, of courae, have tobo carried on. THE PROPORTION, . Teporter—Doos this accommodation paper represont a vory large fraction of the bills ro- colvable ? Bunker—I am not authorizod to spoak for any bank other than my own, Ssventy-five per cent of our bills receivablo is strictly commercial pa- por. This statemont was indorsed by Mr. Alfrod Bpluk, who at that moment entored the bank, Toporter—What do you think of the presont condition of affairs ? Banker—I cousidor that it is much moro sat- {sfactory than it has boon siuco the panio bogan, 1 think T ameafo fo giving it as my opinion that tho worst is past, and allin front is plain sailing. What was mado known in this lnterviow was fully indorsed by tho oficers of the other banks, who, it was clear, are oqually dotermined to carry along such of their customors as require tomporary sssistance. CONDITION OF THE UNION NATIONAL BANK, A roporter of Tux Trinuneeallod on Mr, Cool- baugh, Prosident of tho Unioy, National Bauk, last evening, to nscortain tho#prosent condition of the institution, and the progress made in liquidating its liabilitios. Mr., Coolbsugh mado tho following statement ; Ou Sept, 2, the Unlon National Bank owad to depositors in, round figures, §0,000,000, and at the olose of bueinoss on Oct. 8 (last ovening) It owad to doposltors, all told, $2,213,320.03, "o protect this amount, tho bank has in good DLills rocolvablo, £3,814,139.08; in cash nswoty, immediatoly available, $104,865.68; in United Statos bouds, and other bonds at thoir cash value, aud iu premiums ou United States bouds deposited a8 socurity for its eiraulation, 260,000, making a total of $3,409,604.04 of nssots, Of tho total linbllitios of the bauk, amounting to $2,218,820.02, thoro Is duo to dountry dopos- {tors and country banks, $1,310,605,48 to city dopositors, {noluding all suma due to THE RELIFF FUND AND THE OITY TREASURER, and to ovorybody oleo, $870,689.19. Of the entiro amount of tho cily doposits the Union Nationnl Bank does not, a8 ita ofMcors have the bost authority for' believing, hold moro than one-tenth. ‘They are prepared to pay as promptly in propor- tion to the amount of these deposits which they Lold aa any other of tho banks of this olty. COUNTHY COTTECTIONS. In a porogrination among the wholesalo mer- chauts our re‘;ortur was quite sirprived to find thoir doscription of tho condition of things much ‘more favorablo than could reasonably have been anticipated, Many of thom roported trade brightening daily, while all eaid business was wuch botter than thoy had hoped for, On tho subjact of coliections thoy spoke with evidont pleasire. A momber of a large wholesale house on Madison streot said that at no time in Sep- towber Inst was Lhoro 80 good o threo-dys' list ot colluctions as they could show for tho Tues- doy, Wednesdny, and Thursday of this weok. Their country customers, they etated, werodo- ing thoir utmost to moke romittances, Alto- gother, the wholesale trado of tho city, judging fromn the statomonts of tho wholosale morchants, is fant recovering its autumnal status, and thoro m;:n o:fiel!enc prospects of a good fall trade after all. D ———— THE STONE-CUTTERS, QWING TO THE FACT that soveral of the yards wore closed up beforo tho roportar roached thom, attor 6 o'olock, this roport is not quite completo ; but the tour of the stone-ynards of the South Side, which practically includes all the stone-yards of any consequonce in tho city, was consclentiously made, and prob- ably not more than three or at lonst four es- tablishmonta were omitted from the following report PETER NEU & COMPANY, stone-cuttors, corner of Hurrison streot and Fifth avonue, gave good nows. ‘They discharged 81l their hands Inst Saturdny, but sufiiciont busi- ness has since como in to onable them agamn to omploy a full forco, namely twenty-two stono- cutters, The scone at the yard was a busy, cheorful one, all the men being hard at work and woll contout to find thomsclvos so much better off than they had expeoted. The firm say thinga look so much brighter that thoy saw no reason to fenr being ablo to k8cp all their workmen in full employment all tho wintor. No reduction has beon made in wages, and none will NUMBER 44. both beforo the crash and at prosont, but it is very difficult to make colloctionaj henco tho ne- cosslty of finisbig up onrly. 'THE SINGER & TALCOTT BTONE COMPANY, marrymon, Lemont, ofices No. 816 Frauklin stroet, bhavo dischurged about Lalf their men, aud ara paying the balanoe the reduction. Thie Company have mors ordors than they can fill, and arc obiiged to turn tho smallest over at times to othor peoplo; but, having ndopt. the principlo that it is botter to s spfe business than o large one, they only koop on mmuxih handy to turn out tha material roquired by folks who bavo tho moncy to pay forit, Thoy usually close their seasou’s business with the closo of “navigation, and hopo to do #o this yenr, and uot beforo ; but it is jta- poesiblo to ‘sny, as collections aro bad, Thoy were yestorday able to recommance making da- posits in the First National Bank, and hopo to continue doing so daily henceforth. " EDWIN WALKER, ~ quarryman, Lomont, officos comer of Harrison and Franklin stroets, will closo a couple of weoks earlier than usunl.
