N 8 THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1873, THE ELEVATOR FIRE. Further Particulars of the Desiruc- tion of the Fulton Elovator. About 120,000 Bushels of Corn and 5,000 Bushels of Onts Ruined, The Building a Complete Wreck--Its Eventtul History. Total Loss on Elevator and Con= tents About $100,000. Tho burning of tho Fulton Elovator at 8 a'alack yestorday morning waa made publio only through Tie Taisunm, thongh undoubtedly our alowor contomporaries will And out, to-day or to- morrow, that it happonod. This elovator was built by Muann & Scott, in 1853, It hna boen the depository for twonty-ono yoars of an immonso nmount of proporty. Dostruction by firo meoms to be tho fata of all olovators, and this ono was throstoned in 1850, duribg the United Stntes Fair, hold horo in Octoborof that yosr. Beveral blocks in the vicinity wore swopt away,. and tho oupols of tho olovator was 1gnitod by burning brands falling upon it. Thore wore but ihroe steam-ongines of modorato enpacity in the city, and nono of thom could throw a stroam ot wator to tho height of the oupola, Xtfortunatoly hap= poned thnt thero wss on oxhibition at tho fair o mnow stylo of ongine from Philadelphin, it having boen brought out horo by the compsny who ran it to compote for a premium. Tho Philadelphia boya trotted out their apparatus, which threw n stroam on tho burning roof, and saved tho structuro, For this sorvico Munn & Bceott handsomely rewarded thom with a oheck for $1,000. Of courso, the building hos had many narrow escapos, tho last one belng thrao woeks ago last Baturdey, when fire was dlscoverod in tho lower part of tho building. An ongino noarby put it out boforo serious dsm= ago was dono, Munn & Bcott continued to control this ele- vator up to the time of their bankruptey, which pcourrod lnst year, It was ono of tho famous olovator combination controlled by that firm. Thoy owned the wholo of this house, three- fourths of the Northwestom, flve-sixteenths of the Union, and tho same proportion of tho Oity Elovator. A day or two after Munn & Beott failed, George Armour & Co. purchased thelr intorost in the four olovators, paying thero- for, it is understood, but 810, at tho samo Limo, however, assuming all labilitics for grain be- longing to other partios. Munn & Bcott had outstanding at the time of the sale roceipts for 150,000 buslhels of corn and 80,000 bushols of wheat ovor and sbove the guantity of grainin storo, Armour & Co. had to fill theso rucnllgl!, b loast so thoy roported, and tho public had to {nko their word for it. ‘The elovator was, in the moantime, the subjeot of disputo in tho courts, In 1808, Munn & Beott baving lost heavily by unlucky spocula~ tions in grain, woro forced to mortgago their in= torest in the four establishments to Jesso Hoyt & Co., ot New York, This mortgage had nob been Tforcolased, and was etill hold by Hoyt & Co. Their claim was rl‘lm' to that of Armour & Co. 8o the Court declded, vacating as vold tho salo to Armour & Co., and directing tho 3Munn & Bcott interest in tho four clovatora to be sold ot publio ouction. Tho amnle took placo last Friday, when Hoyt & Co. bid in \um wholo lot tor 3315,500, of which 875,000 was \he price of the burned building, It was tho fourth clovator built in Chicago, and the only gurrivor of the four, tho othor throo bavingbeen dertroyed by firo. ‘Worl in the clovator consed at 7 o'clock Satur- doy ovoniug, and tho workmon went homo, the building remnining in charge of tho watchmon, Lverything, 8o far a3 is Jmowy, wae all right until 2 o'dock Bunday mnmius when a policoman on Randolph street bridgo dlecovered flames issuing from tho cu- pola. Hegave the alarm, and, running round to tho elevator oflice, told tho ' watohman that tho institution was burning. Tho watchmen very properly omme out, By this time tho on- ino bogan to arrive, and, 4s_quickly ns possi- o, G‘“ to work, Itwsano use. The building was old and dry, just rosdy to burn, and it did * burn flercoly, for beforo the sccond alarm was surned in it was o mass of roaring flames. ‘The timbors cracked and snapped, the roof foll 1n, tho walls foll out, and tho rmin wag complote. It took no time toburo. Tho enginos wera of little uso, oxcept to save the Iarge amount of lumber and_other inflammable fi:opnrlfi in tho neighborhood. The eleyator be- g used oxolusively for grain brought by cansa), soven canal boats wore moored ab the wha slongside. They were in imminent dan- or ~ of destruclion. Thore were no ugs, 60 the firomen chopped tho onbles and sont . them nd:ift, Boon after, o fow tugs came along and took thom in oharge, The fire iluminated tho sky, and tho reflection was scon in overy port of the city. It was o brilliont sight. Largo crowde were attractod to tho scene, aud daylighs found them still standing and gazing, The ruins were visited by the curious yester- day. The tall chimnoy stood alone and eolitary, & sort of monolith commemorating the fire, Tho iron shaft romaiped whore tho machinery foll away from it. The timbors wero black and charred, and the corn lay piled over the timbers, end covored £ue baso of ‘tho building. At the rivor sido tho corn was out at the edge of tho whart, showing where s large quantity was pourcd_futo the river when tho east wall fell. he grain was smouldering, and an engino was busy dnlufii:fi it withwater. By all acconnts, the firemon di that conld bo dono under the siroumstancos, and it is & matter of congratula~ tion that the flamos spread no furthor. Thero wero 120,000 bushols of corn and 5,000 bushels of onts in the olevator. A largo quan- tity of the corn can bo used for distilling pur- poses, ‘fhis will reduce the loss vory con- siderably. Tho valne of %mln destroyed will bo about &00,000, and of tho building about 340,000, moking §100,000 iu all. Tho grain is_owned by Bonrd of Trade men, but, as they usually insure n certain amount of spaco by tho yosr, and have it fostred all tho time, tho probability is that tho loss will £all ontircly upon the insurance com- panies, The grain was from tho river towns, the building Laving boen used oxclusively for discharging canal-boats, Messrs. Hoyt & Co. will rebuild immediatel; on tho aamo aite, putting up an olovator with: sl the modern improvements, requiring an oxpon- diture of 160,000, Thero is amorigago of £30,- 000 on tho ground, held by Mr. Qeorgo Watson, but that will not interfere with tho intondod re- building. The building was insured for £20,000, but wo wero unable to ascortain tho nomes of the com- pauies. It was atated yostordsy that a '”fi“ amount of the insurance on the grain a in the ‘Traders', of Chicago. It had o fixed rolation to baptism, Tho Apostles confirmed those who had beon baptizoed, and our confirmation wss snalogous to that of tho earlier Christians, whiok required that all thoso who i boon bap- tizod must be confirmed by the Blshop. Confirmation, with rare oxcoptions, hed in oll agea boon sdministerad by thio ordor of Bishops. It involved, of necossity, tho dootrina of tho Trinlty. Tho Bishops “wore Fathers in tho Churah, thus typifying tho Fatherhood of God. Thon again, confirmation was a nocossity; it was a confesaion of tho Trinna Godhead, and it was impossible to reject confirmation without rojecting ealvationitsolf.
