Louis aro owing to tho fact that Mr. Edworda has been porsonally attacked by tho press of that city, and the accuracy of his work steadily donied. ‘Tho Chicago Direotory of 1860 contained 28,708 nomes; thatof 1860, 70,103; that of 1870, 100,655, end the now one, 188,060. Assuming that onch namé ropresents three ond o half persons, tho total population of the city would bo 465,170, or 166,788 more than was givon by the Government census of 1870. This differonce, howover, ia partly owing to the defective charactor of that consns, a8 was shown by tho ono subsequently takon by Mr. Edwards, Bo far as hie ratio of threo and a half is concerned, overy porson who uys ony attontion to the po&u\ntlon in Bl ‘own Roighborhood wit find fhat il tuo privato families around him so far ox- ceod that number por household as to compensate for the unmarried peoplo, and for those who aro packed in bo: g-housos snd hotels, who constitute in this city only about ton anda hale ‘porsons out of every hundred ; whilo in 8t, Louis cighteen out of overy hundred como under that category.
