i ' RS i b e -and were . made - When Ellis & 16 OBITUARY. Doath of William Ellis, One of the Ploneers of Chicage=A flan of Strict:| Antegrity and a Good Printer, ! _ ‘The announcement that William Ellis is_dead | " will dim many an eve with ear of regret. ‘He passed away ai an early houron TFridsy morning 1ast, in tho 61st year of his age, and the, 831 of ‘his residence in Chicago. The disense. which" carried him off was a. galloping cnnmmpmm, ! superinduced by an internal, injury. susained in railread sccident about two years ago;; while ‘bringing the remains of his wife from Montana to this city. He was confined to the house for about two monthe previons to_ his death. The funeral will take place at noon to-day from his Iate residence, No. 65 Aberdeen stroet, proceed- ing thence in carriages to Calvary Cemetery. . Ellis came to Clu::fo in 1840 from Mon- treal, where he had served s long and faithfnl apprenticeship at the printing business. Ho immediately obtained mplo ent st the offico of the original Tamvxe, and worked there until 1841, when he formed a copartnership with Mr. Roberg Fergus, who is at the present time one of the oldest, best, and_most prominent printers in Chicago. Ellis & Fergus were the only really capable printers in the Northwest in those days, and their business soon corresponded with their men(s. During the first year of their pariner-. Ship they put in: cizcnlation the - firal penny paper published in Tllinois, called the Quid-Nunc. In 1644 they started the Democratic -Advocate, the Corporation Printers by the Common Council. Previous to this time, ~John ' Wentworth, who wss n member of Oongress, and the editor of & paper advocating his pecullar political views, was one nf the most powerful men in the Btete. His ger!ndlcm:nhhon of abon¢ 8,000 ocopies generally speaking had: ‘matters nmmcxpal arranged pretty much to its own sstisfaction. Fergus - entered the field with their. Democratic Advooate, and their suj anar Imowledge of the printing bnsiness and of the value of news, they made & large inroed uj John's patronage, and their journal rapidly came the favorite paper of the public. Moy showed the people of that early day what 2 good newEpaper meant, thongh neither of them: Were ‘profeasional journalis In the Evening Joumgzthu other day, there appesred & readnble sketch of old_times in Chi- cago, from the pen of Benjamin F. Taylor, who hes been connected with tiat paper in one ca- pacity or another for & great many years. With the excoption of one or two unimportant por- tions, the aricle was purely imaginative ; ut, a8 it has reference fo the timein which Mr. Ellis figured s publisher, it is proper to give ita most, imaginative portion a little attention. Mr. Taylor points with commendabla pride to the fact that the Journal of that day. published the President’s Memah foll, & fut in local journalism which never. before besn sc- oam;\l.lshefilmd claims that it geve the docn- ment to ublic in advance of its con- temporaries. I'ha truth about. the matter is, that the Journal wes fumished with copy of the message from the office ot the Democratic Advocate which had -gone to the unheard-of expense of sending couriers fo Michigan in orderio beat Long John's nows- paper. The Journaland Another unimportant paper were supplied with copies, so that Went- worth might be made to feq his defeat all tha more keenly. The securing of the messsge was but one of . the many enterprises in Chicago journalism which Mr. Eilis get on foot. After h&vmg‘ been together for about eight years, Ellis dissolyed u?mners!up, and tho former went to Cmroms, gold fever be~ ing then at its height. It does not :gpeu— that he worked in the gold mines, for gu prlnhm ‘wera scaroe in that wild country, and enormons wages. He secured the pouhon u! foreman in the leading office of: one of the cipal fowns in the State, at 8 salary of $100 in gold per week, and_remained there for some years. Being & thrifty man he experienced no difficulty in Saving money, which be wisely invested-in Chicago Teal estate, One of his meny speculations was the purchase of the old city pasture lot, situsted in the vicini- 4y of what is now the corner of Douglas place and State street. The tract comprised ten acres, and Mr. Ellis risked 8100 on ths ‘whols lot. Of course, all the wise men of ths.time said he was® ion].\sh ond would never get hia ‘money back, but he sold it not a great many years ago for about 88,000, He leaves & hand-~ ‘some fortune behind him. Perhaps the best epitaph that could be written of him is, that hu w2a & man cf strict integrity exda good printer, THE CITY IN BRIEF. ‘The County Clerk issued twenty-five marriage Ticonses yestorday, making & total of 135 for the week.
