The line has also boen located from that point to South Chicago, and will run through the centre of that place, From South_ Chicago northward the lie has ot been located, and fhere is much _spoculation smong land-owners and other inter- ested parties-as_to ‘which of several proposed -routes will be adopted. It is protty well under- stood that the Baltimore & Ohio Company have made afi arrangement with the Dlinois Central for depot facilities and for the use of the tracks of the Iatter Company from the depots to some Puint outside the city limits to be settled upon. The:use of the Ilinois ‘Central tracks is, we understand, to bo poid for by the mile, ond the ' Baltimore - & Ohio Compény are thérefors’desirous of making -the oint of junction as near the depots as possible. Jo routes havo. been proposod for the road From -South” Chicago. to_the junction: One throbgh the centre of Secs. 25- snd 3l.io o junction with' the Ilinois Central somewhere Dosr Bixty-sixth street. Along this ronte of about three and a half miles the Company would be.obliged to’buy ithe right-of-way, but as the believed to be desirous of hay- ing tho -advantage of submrban trains, they would probably offer any -rcasonable induca- ‘ments to the Company. ~The other proposcd Tonte runs nearly north-from the north boundary of South Chicago to the eouth end of Railroad avenus, adistance of one mile. Through this land the Company would have to scquire the right of way, but the land-owners are kmown o be desir- ous bf having the road, and-the cost would in fact. bo oaly mominal. - Bailroad avenue runs confined to sirests like Twenty-second and West Mndison, but is_evon greater in the newly-built treetsin tho business centre of the city, whero yentals to correspond fo thé location would be easily obtained for 16-foot shops, when équal Tents could mot be~obtained for the ¢ palatial stores.” - 7 235 2 v * Thero is, however, & groat demand for shops 20 4l the secondary centres of trade, such as the Junctionsof Madison and Halsted, Blue Island and Halsted, Lake. street- west of Union Park, Twenty-second and Wabssh, Douglas place and Cotuj: Grove, eto., etc. New clusters of nhogu ere o being formed in-various parts of the city, Gausing _grest increase in the value of the property, and concentrating trade to a wonder- ful extent. It isonly four orfive years gince the man who built the block of hops on the northesst corner of Michigan avenue and Twen- ty-second street was® laughed at for what was ralled his folly'; but the street hes become 3 great thoronghfare, and his buildings have pai from 15 t0 20 per cent per annum on his invest- ment.. - But on the other hand we' find ' that in -some neighborhoods there hns been s very large re- duction in the rents of small stores and shops, resulting from the gravitation of certain classes of business back to_the centre of the city, from which they were driven by the fire. This is the case with all those on Wabaah avenue, between ‘Harrison and’ Washin streets, and also the Parts of West Bandolph'and Washington streets ‘esst of Halsted, and on Canal, between Randolph and Madison. -We hear of one storeon West Ilsnflol?h' street, between Cansl and Clinton, _which ast year rented for. $1,800 per: snnum, which is_now empty and offered for §500—a de* cline of 60 per cent. : « BALES OF RESIDENCES. Notwithstanding the large demand for dwell- Ings to rent, we do not find that there -are many en of saydaas of residences. Those who are desircus’of becoming the owners of cottsges Eaneully buy lots and build for themselves. [ho class that” Dwgpog better- houses, costing from 85,000 to £10,000 each, are using their cap- ital in trade, and, 28 & rule, prefer to rent. The ownership of such honsos’ is, therefore, loft xainly to sslaried and professional men in all cities, though, perhaps, less'so in this than in others, Wealthy bankers, merchants, and capi- talista of course own their houses, but this is a parallel with the lake shore and half & mile back fromit. Along this, for a distance of & mile and a quartet, the owners of the land propose to donste to the railroad the right of way, Tuus for two and a quarter_miles from South Chicago porthward, the Company would get the right-of- way for almost- nothing. It is understood that the Compsny favor this route o8 far as it goes, ‘but from the north end of Railroad avenue they want o strike directly north and run along the "LAKE PEONT OF THE PARK to s junction with the Iilinois Central north of Hyde Park Station, and & ghood many reports are in circulation that {lie South Park Commission- ers are willing to listen to some’ proposal of the Railrond Company for this_privilege. There is, wo believe, no foundation for these reports. In the first place, it is doubtful if the Park Com- missioners have the legal authority to grant the railroad the privilege of even building & track on Piles outsids of the present water-margin, as it would destroy the attractiveness of the beach, which was- the. main object -in the Jocation of that divirion of the South Parks. But aside from the legality of the question it would be an ontrage which the Park Commission- ers could never seriously contemplate. It is, thereforo, to be presumed that there is no immi- nent danger of the Railrow] Company ' securing that route, though it is*positively asserted in some quarters that they meanto try. “If the line of Raiiroad avenue were carried outto a junc- tion with the Illinois Central track at eaySixty- second street it would run through the southwest corner of Lake Park, adistance of three-quarters of & milo. If the fouth Park Gommissioners conld legally grant the railrosd the right of way through this part of the South Par for areasona- ble compensation, it would be a beaefit to every- body concerned. ~Ths south half of the Lake- Shore Park i too large to be- accessible to the very people who ate entitled. to the most consid- eration in the arrangement of theso E:xrn’ ~iz., ‘those-who cannot afford to own or hire borses and carrisges, but mast. depend on railronds of one kind or another for their Saturday and Sun-. day recreations in_the parks. - To the scuth half of tho lake-shore front of the Park it is nearly a mile and a half from the nearest railroad stations, 00 far for women and children to walk to the beach to which every pleasure-seeler gravitates as naturally as & duck. .. A BATLROAD BTATION IN THE PARK wherefrequent suburban trains would land peo- limited class in any city, and the msjority prefer builing to euit e o taena of tacko and comfort, ¢ Ar. A, J. Averell recently sold one of the mar- ble-front three-story residénces on the east side -of Michigan avenus, north of the Burlingion erossing, for £15,000. . The -fiva feet, éast front, on Calumet avenue, whick we mentioned last week as hay- ing been. sold t6 Mr. W. H. Mitchell, of Alton, . cccupied with a £80,000 residence for him, is just south of Twentieth street, and not south of Twenty-second, as the made us 8a7. . . McCord & Co. have recently sold “two, two-story and basement marble swell-fronis, on angley nvenus, near Ellis Park, located on lots 21x130 feet, for $12,000 esch. There are eloven rooms in each dwelling, l:zfip!iui with hot and cold ‘Water, marble mantels, and all the modern conveniences.” g The same parties are perfeciing plans for ten more similar dwellings in the same locality on :‘:e comer of Thirty-eighth street and Vincennes cote, 5 Five two-story and basement marble-fron dwellinga are”being_erected on the corner of Langley and Thirty-sighth streets. . i Plans are prepared for three two-story and basement marble fronts on the northeast comer of Ellis Park, Alarge hall for the use of the: “Landmark Masonio e,” with stores undernesth, will ery probebly be built soon on the corner of Wl%mah and’ Cottage Grove avenues by Geo, W. The Bouth Shore Park s more remote from the great mass of tho popula- . tion who are taxed to puy for it than any of the other public grounds, and therefore its improve- ment and the means of ‘access require different ireatment from those of any of the other parks. 1t.is too fer from the centre of po&,flhficm in the Bouth Division, and in Hyds.
