THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: SUNDAY; APRIL 6, 187 METROPOLITAN MODES. The Democracy of Attire, and the Despotism of Clothes: - The Fale Glories of the Lenten Season. “Polozaises More Complicated Than . Rver-- Ko Femizine Soul Above Buttons: Hand and Head Adornments, - From Our Otwn Correspondent, New Yo, April3, 1873, April1seems s more natural date for this ecveod; for certain it would appear that only fools would gossip of spring ‘and summer fabrics; ‘styles, neceseities, when, 80 for s weather goes, - thereis nothing to indicate the approaching . peed of any of them. The only comfort in the + Inteness of the season is, that -numerous busy _ mortals, who generally are not quito ready for any change of time, may, in this instance, be enabled to have one suit or garment completed * before the days of its desirableness havo wholly © cdme. 5 ‘THE REPUBLICAN LEVEL. From a politico-economical standpoint, the fashions of to-dny are a curee to civilized na * tions all over the globe ; but especially is this frue of tho Republic. Hore, where thore is no * 1aw of custom to prevent the cook from woaring* © a3 costly clothos as her mistress, if she can get B , the evil is plainest. Tho lady with $500 spend for her year's vardrebe does Ber best to dress as finely as she who spends *' €5,000; and it is natural, though not wise, that + ghe should. Few, indeed, are the circles, espe- cially in New York, where the quality of gowns and hats does not count for or against the wea= er in social sums, If this unfortunate fact is true of tho beiter classes, how much truer it must be of those poorer-bred and poorer-sduca- * ésd women who have no ‘interior power of re- sisting the current of feminine extravagance, which is fast sweoping all social life into one vast whirlpool of clothes. . - Ifwecouldonly have alittlorespite—soy asingle .. yoar, in which to recaperats our montal, moral, sad physical forces—(fachion {8 quite z8 wear- ing physically a3 any other way), and live, for . even that brief space, in an’ atmosphere of * untrimmed skirts and simple waists, what a boon it wonld be to helpless, hopeless “femininity " The world might then present a future unroffied end untucked; we might xise Buperior to tho next decade of plaits and puffs; we might even lose the desire to wear silk, when . we secretly know that we ought bardly to afford alpaca. It is possible—barely possiblo—iwe might come to rule fashion, instead of fashion ruling us. Who knowa? L3 7 - And so, having writ my little plaint, 1l come beck o the great questions, and try to help my walucky sex on their melancholy way. THE ANTE-EASTER DAYS. The last fortnight or ten days before Easter go for little, 50 far 2s ‘modes sre concarned. Those who have new things readst> wear kesp them for tht all-important oponing-day of vernal vestments ; and those who have nothing &mpned aro laviog their plans, sod discussing eir needs, holding the 13th' inst. over in view. A few hapless victims of the sterner sex, who have boen falsoly educated in tho belicf that March is amonth of spring, have slrondy ap- ed in light overcosts and pesrl trowsers. ¢ their wiser sisters bave withheld, thus for, 21l the bewitching novelties their clover braing bave devised. There is no doubt that the calen- @ar should be revised and redivided into spring, summer, sutumn, winter, and March ; and, until this bo done, we must ever be in state of hope- less perplexity a3 to what division rhe Last really helongs. Egypt is the only spot on the globé swhore March 18 not only tolersble, but pleasant. It would, however, be excessively in- oonvenient for all the model Republicans to pack their carpot-bags,—only wo %o longer have carpat-bags, and I really mean valises,—and take passage annually, in the middle of February, for _ tho Nile-land; to ey nothing of the great hlow this would involve to® home-industzy. There- fore, if we were allowedonly to consider Marchas a season by iteelf, we might endure it patiently on our owh shores. 3 - POLONAISES 2 &till retain their place in the estimation of mo- distes, and mainly for the reson-that they in crease in complication s surely as the Auxl'.g Te- volves. It daily grows less emsy for the nnac- complished hand £o fashion one correctly ; henca the dressmokers insist that tbey are tho onl correct wear. Tho artists in mantus compel us to nse a certain styla ; then force uato let them make the garments, and pile Pelion upon Ossa by ssking us peaco-Gestroying prices for their servicos. The polonaise is lefh useful and economical for the warm days than the basquo and upper skirt, since it is not possiblo to Wenr thin waists —thoso time-honored standbys—with it. But per_contra, for tho brief space we dare to call epring, they are unquestionsbly the favorite mode.’ There seem to be throe featuresof which all varisties partake this season: They are very long, sometimes teaching almost o the bottom of theskirt behind; theyare double-bressted, and also openin front from tho waist' down. There is also almost no fulnesson the hips, and but fow long, gracefal loopingsin the becl,— the double box-plait in the middio of the back seeming to bo the link connecting the present garments with thoss of the past winter. 2 One_of the most satisfactory and- elogant trimmings for these long, open costs is vest of eilk, of » blending or delicately contrasting shede, Iaid on_the waist, and faced back on the ekirt of the polonaise, like brood revers. This should be finished by two folds, an inch wide, of the material and the ‘mlk lke the rbst,—the material turning toward the rest, and the silk the roverse,—with a fold, piped on one edge with silk and the other with the stuff, in m iddle, Threoslternato folds of staff sad ilks, with & piped fold at the top, are tho praper thing for the edge of the polonaise, LR One pretty garment has the two side-bodies of the back carried down, on the ontside of the polonaise-skirt, into two long, square sash-ends ; while the side-bresdths are caught on, nnder- neath, to the wast-band which ought to be in all waists. Many of these new coste—or reding- otes, a5 they are almost—have squaro entique pockets on tho side-breadths firiog thom sn ncompromisiagly business- ike sspect, Which 8 rather a relief after the cnerally raghaggish spposrance (however fine e bitzin it} of costumes of the last three or four years. It is unguestionsble that many women look remarkably woll in the ragbag styls, wbowi!.llookmanksblgfll in the severity of the incoming designs. But they must content themeelves for & fime in eimple attire, giving their statelier sisiers & chance to show what euitability can do Zor them. ‘When one comes to describs costumses, it Beems as if everything were trimmed with folds and pipings, and it is almont literally truo. Never were these plain and attractive ornaments #0 extensively used a3 on tho dainty toilettes preparing for the mild deys we expoct $o have &0mo Lime in tho distant futore. - BUTTONS form s most moticesblo fenturein all the new euits. They are molds covered with silk or serge, or_any and every material; thoy are of steel, o ivory, of old silver, of_oxydized silver, of jet, of bone ; they are cut, or inlsid, or or ‘polished to uniraginsble brightness; they aro round, theyare squaro, they are oblong, thoy are dismond-shaped; but, more than all, they &re large, snd are used with a rackless disregard to the strength of the wearer. A recently-completed costnme had upon it five dozen Jarge buttons covered with tho same a8 the drens. They were put ca in overy concoivabls Placo, and peeped ont fromall soris of odd olds’ and Joopings, eingty, and in groups, of threea and fives ; and, though one would natur- ally suppose there had been an epidemic of but- $ons, and that this dress hod taken the disesss severely, it would bo difficult to_point out the pot whare even one button could_bo removed ‘without serious injury £o the “ air™ of the robe. One fortunate thortal here, whose possessions need be limited only by her desires, has obtaingd some beautiful Japanese ivory buttons, inlaid with mother-of-pear] in exquisite fanciesof birds and flowers. The cost of these ornamenta is $3 apieco, §36 for the set of twalve. They have eyes and can bo readily removed from any cam- bric or lawn dress by withdrawing. the 1ln, before eending the garment 10 the Isundry. As they can be well worn . with Usohi czosn and with carefal usaze will Iast a lifetirae, they are not 80 éxpensive in the' end a8 they séem at first, and, 28 they 1. a part :tty |20 passing mode, they will Ji.:;s i GLOVES— " * * ¢ that is, kid gloves—almost dlvide with lsce au- promacy in the feminine mind. It is rather a pity for women who have protty” wrists and arms fo wear these long coverings, for pretty wrists and arms sre beaitios to rively bextowed by Mother Nature to warrant their en- tire concealment in any gloves, even though they be so perfect as the new. Thess are’ considored very be- co:ning, but do not hold their shape &0 well as thelong gloves which button from wrist to elbow. Now, ts ever, the dark Quaker grays, and the greon graya of. to-day, are the choico for stroot-wear ; while' blnc-lavenders, pink-pearls, and & new shedo of straw,—* gosling,”—are the 1Invorites for calls end receptions, But, where one has hundreds of shades of tho same color to choose from, there ié no sense in making one or two the special mode, Eachand evory one is beautiful enough to be chosen, and thereforo they ehould all be worn. HEAD-WEAR. Thoremmicisafionu to the evil of being & woman. We can't havo the bellot, but we can have some of the most charming bonnets ever concacted to ensnare the eyes of the free and in- dependent voiers of these United States. It's quite uscless to pretend thore is any epocial ghape to them, or that thoy ato describable, otherwiee than that " they are bunchies of Iaces and flowers, with a few straws thrown in to make a protense of some- thing substantial, which, by & wido strotch of imagination, we vainly endeavor to beliove io bo held on the head by delicato scarfs: of lace, fust- ened far balow the chinby rose-buds, or pansies, or tiny leavos. . No'hing lcas than_inspired vacuity conld have devised the present bonnot. It is the most un- renl of realities, and is charming withal. Itis o bo worn far back on the heafi, exposing the forehead and front hsir to full view, and will doubtless be sufficiently unbecoming. RBut, in and of itself, it ia besutiful ; therefore, lot us praiso it befora we put it or, lest dissppointment close our lips forever thereafter. FURBELOW. PISTOL PRACTICE. dudge Willlams Puts Down His Foot onthe - Use of tite Pistol for Imaglnary Affronts-Hs Sentencés Wray in W iclesome Anglo-Saxon. “Bill” Wray was up for sentence in the Crimns 1 Court, yesterdsy, Mr. Evans, one of the leading counsel of the city, looked very much out of place de- fandinghim, Mr, Evans declared, in the most em- ‘phatic and solemn manner, that he w38 as well satisfied of Wray's innocence as he was of his own. He prayed the Court for clemency, and made one of the most powerful zppesls ever heard in the Criminal Court. Bereviewed with minutenesa the testimony 23 to the manner in which the shoeting was done, with the in- tention of showing that it wasaccidental, Hs then spoke of the mamner in which the papers had worked Tp a public feeling against the prisoner, for whom he spparcatly feit considerabls commiseration, Ho denjunced the practice of suck sen- satfonal newwpopers as tha Journal coming out with such bloodtiirety reports as that which appeared in that lively and interesting sheot on the evening of the trial. Ho tried to show that the man’a ‘ife was sick nigh unto death, end that it would be & cruel and an uujust act to depriv: her and his helploss Iittle family of the solace of William’s company and support, without the very clearest evidence of his t, which, he contended, bad not been afforded. Ha ‘would produco the *family physician ™ 3a to his wife's sickness. - Ths doctor was called, and_ proved that st the time Wray’s trial wea laat oz, his wife was laboring in the pangs of child-birth, and was for thirty-six hours in a stato hovering "twixt 1ife and death, The child was eickly, and the “oman had at no time since bezn out of danger. Ho was examined at great length on sub- Jects that aid not affect the question at isane, but Which doublless zroused the sympathy of almost everyone in Court, - ‘Tho Court reviewed the tostimany, the arguments of the counsel, and the afidavits filed. ’ He referred o an idea that prevailed that ho had ehown himself proju- diced against Mr, TWray, and informed those who enter- tained the ides that they were deceived, and that far {rom being being prejudiced he had striven to ba just, even to the straining of that term, in his instructions tothe jury. Ho had instructed the jury in the very ‘words used by Alr, Evans, and not only 80, but_he had done it more than onco, ' He did not. agres with Mr, Evana as to the facta in the shooting. 1In his opinion, Wrsy was not justified in what he did, and he was not in real danger when he fired. Ho had spoken very in- zolently to Condon, and the latter went from behind the ‘bar, no doubt menacingly, but still not insuch 3 manner aa to cause Wray foar. Wray was a powerful man, and had no rezson to shrink from s personal encounter with Condon. In justice to the defendant the jury were instructed to find whether Wray had fired_ the shot with the idea that he was in danger. By their verdict they found that he did not ; and he was able to 2ay of this jury that ho had very ‘rarely seen a_more intelligent or more respectabls jury, in thet Court, They were all old citizens, And s to the press, he did ot think many peopls had seen that paragrapli in the Journal to which Mr, Evans referrsd. Ho did not be- lieve that men wers to carry pistols about with them, sud draw them ot st the first word. Wray o this instance did soem to hive invoked the trouble that had come about. There was no pretense that he was bruised, or that ho had suffered corporeal punishment, had 2 black eye, or 8 biceding nose, Hecause s ‘mon s siruck it does not follow that he has any right to raw s pistol and shoot his sssailant like a dog. This sort of thing waa too much indulged in, and it was time that citizens should know that it would no Jonger pass rapunished. It waa very well fora man to say that he was threatencd. A threatened man was often an untrustworthy Jjudge of Lis personal peril In this case, Wy ~was struck s blow on the Tresst; tliat was the utmost that had been set up, snd thersupon he fired 3 pistol ot Condon's head, Tho aim was of & deadly charaoter, and i was no fault of Wray, but an accident, that Condon didnot fall dead on the spot, and that ¥ray was not there standing in that court charged with his murdor, The county had hsd 100 much of this sort of business, and it was time that the dispassionate execution of justice should be ca- forced. As to tho sick wife and family of Wray, it was always a misfortune that theso guilty men drew down with them in their fall the innocent ; that the punith- ment of the guilty alwaya fails on the funocent a8 woll, And as to money, it was not to be understood that be- cause s man had’ monoy, or possested frisnds who had moncy, and was therefore able o obtain the a6~ istance of eminont counsel, thut they were therobs Spated s fate which would befall & Toorer criminal. Bucha bellef had existod, and ft was tim the peopls shonld learn it must cossc. He waa determined, ss far aa he was concerned, that equal justico shonld be meted out to all, and he was sure that hia brother Judges who would sit in that Court after him, would carry out in practice the ssme sentiments, Afier fur- ther remarks of thoe same kind the Court sen- tenced the prisoner 10 ono year in the House of Cor- rectlon, and a fine of §350, refusing to be influeaced in his sentence by the cloquence of the connsel, ax- cept in mitigation of the fine, THE VIENNA CARPETS. In s late number of Tz TaBUNE We copied from the Public Zedger, of Philadelphia, an ar- ticle respecting the carpets manufactured by the Vienns Carpet Manufacturing Company of thit city. Our attention was attracted to the article by the novelty of & good carpet produced at 8o low s price ; and, knowing the good character of the Zedger for reliability, we copied it as = mat- ter of interesting information. Since that time, Mr. Beed, the Presidentof the Compsay, has visited Chicago and made arrangements with Megsrs. Field, Leiter & Co. for the sale of this cn-set to the people of the great Northwest. Under the management of - Mr. Dixon Bean, the head of the carpet department in their extensive establishment, who has a fne assortment of pat- terns or Bpecimens, -we have no doubt, the Vien- na carpeta will soon become widely and favora- bly known in this part of the country, 2a they are east of the Alleghanies. Mesars. Field, Leiter & Co. will be able to sell theac carpota st factory rices. # We have before ussamples of theso goods, and are surprised st the low price at which thoy are furnishod. But the manufacturors claim that they mingle philsnthropy with their businozs, and say that money may be made by supplying a much-needed srticle st philantbropio pricos— an article which insures warmth, comfort, cheer- fulness and cleanliness at excecdingly economi- qfi:‘m' ot af ‘woole " ents many o cost of woolen carpets preven householders_from covering their floors, the scrubbing and keeping clean of which costs much Iabdr, producing bad colds, etc. ; but the prico at witich these carpets are placed enables all classea of peopld to cover their floors and adorn their .@wellings, thus eaving labor andinsuring com- fort and ‘élegatice, instead of sufering from )flmnodlcfl deluges, and being mortified by barren oors and chocrless rooms. Sad a5 this novel announcement may scem, 3 gentlemanly young reporter of the Staats Zeitung s compelled to sdmit its force. Let the following facts llnstrata it : Yesterday 8t 11 o'clock or thereabouts the young gentleman in question, while walking down Harrison street, nenr Wabash avenue, obeerved a boy carrying an_enormous envelope. B0 huga was this envelope that the surgi populace aud the geatlemanly reporier were of agliast at ia proporticns. While lost in wonderment at tho envelope's size, the young gentleman's satonishment was further increased by observing tho ‘bearer of the portentions envelops fling it 3\:!5!1:! into themud, ' To fing anything Into the mud is an fn- dignity ; but to disposa of so majestic an envelope in this manner was, to the reporter’s sensa of morality, little short of sacrilege. When the boy departed, the gentlemanly reporter picked up tho cuvelope, and, opening it, was moro astonizhed than ever. It was found to contain five £10,000 notes, and some bonds and mortgages bolonging to Treasurer Hatch, of Burlington, Towa, The envelope was addressed 10 the President of s National of this city, To the banker the reporter carefully conveyed the precious discovery, and, on presenting it to_the gen- tleman, receivod 'his warmest thanks. The young gentleman whoss honesty and sagacicy may have re- stored o fund of wealth {0 its owner, has mot yet seen that box of Boss Conchs cigars for which his soul thirateth. It is probable that the banker, in his aston- ishment, forgot to sk the finder which brand he pre- ferred.
