During tho present ogitation of the Sunday liquor and ssloon license quostions, it may be interesting to know that the first requirement of & license was made by the Common Couucil in May, 1851, whon the amount of licenso was fixed at $50. In February, 1853, the State Legisla- ture passed s law anthorizing the Common Goun-~ cil to fix the amount at from $50 to $300. In March, 1835, after the oloction of Mayor Boone, the Know-Nothing candidate, the Common Coun= cil fixed the amount of license at $300, and_put in the Sunday clause, at the samo time giving {he Mayor power to revoko liconses. At this time there wero but nine wards in tho city, and of the 18 Aldermen 13 voted for and 5 against the ordinsnce.
