The party arrived in the city on Tuesdey morning, and ‘were met at the depot by 1ir. W. C. Cleland, Assistant Gereral Passenger and Ticket Agont -of the Pittsburgh & Fort Wayne Railroad, and -immediately escorted to tho Sherman Honso. "Mr. Cleland's office was made the headquarters «of the party, where they were visited by various ‘prominent railwey officisls duing the day. The object of the visit of these distin- guished gentlemen was to. inspect the Tecent operations in connectim with their lines centering in Chicago, and t> consider the question of 2 new union depot, on Canal and Madison strcets, to be used by the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Clicago, the Pittsburgh, Ciocin- nati & St. Louis, the Chicago & Akon, and the ABlwaukee & St. Paul Railroads. Mr. S, S. The new depot will -extend from Madison street south to Adams, -along Cmnl,hindwm be constructed of stone. The plans have not been decided upon, but it ~was resolved that it should mot be exceeded in E co by any similar structure in the country. . It is only now certain that the bailding will be ‘Gconpied by the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chica- 5& e Chicago & Alton, and the Milwaukes & Panl Bailroads, as no. satisfactory arrange- ment could be made with the Northwestern Rail- Way, regarding the Pittsburgh, Cincionati & Bt. It is rumored thatthe Penneylvania Central ‘managers have united with the managers of the Milwaukee & St. Paul Road, and that hereafter their interests will be identical. The Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Branch of he Michigan Central Ltailroad has been com- Sloted froin Jackson to Crawford, a distance of 203 miles. Work has been stopped on_sccotint ‘a7 cold weather, but will be resumed earlyin the spring. Thisroad will be completed to Macki- navw City by next October, and will run through some of the finest timber iand in Michigan. This Jand, when cleared, is found to bo fertile, unid snsceptible of high cultivation. The Com- pauy own sl the land slong the line, and will tlear it as raridly as they progres. The Chicago & Alton Hailroad Company are buildivg s three-mile branch north from Lou- isiana, Mo., alorg the river bank, to a place in £he yiver whera the channel is fullof water the geerronnd. Thisis being done to avoid the sty delaye in trains over the Louisians exten- sion, which have been occasioned by the fre- quent- low water at Louisiana. The Company ‘heye securod a stock trade over this route which neither they nor Chicago can afford to be de- ived of, and every effort will bemade by the E;npmytokeep the line in active operation duwing the winter. Company, yesterdsy filed his zepiy to the revisory petition of the petitioning credtors, "praying that the decision of Judge Blogett, declining to remove the Assignee, be ¢akm poder review. Evanston's Sensation Man Again on His Midnight Walks--Young Ladies Badly Frightened. An sttempt was made, Monday evening, by some miscreant, to burn the public school build- ing in this pise. Shovings, saturated with keroseno oil, had been placed under the front stops and ignited. The flames spread rapidly, but were fortunately discovered by Mr. Bllc_k- ley, the janitor, before they were undontrollable, and by active exertion on his part were sub- dued.
