THE CHICAGO ‘DAILY TRIBUNE: WEDNESDAY., DECEMBER 4,. 1872. 7 CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET. S TuEspAx Evexmsa, Dec. 3. The receipts of Live stock since Saturdsy have been as follows: Cattle, Hogs., Sheep. 2,508 94360 548 593 208w 1,138 6,530 61,186 1,686 3409 64357 1,309 565 23,85 1,954 Catile, Hogs. Sheep, eeenees 1,034 3473 302 CATTILE—Trado opened very dull for all do- seriptions of stock, neither I nor outside buy- ers operating to_any considerable extent during the foremoon. Eastern advices, though not in- dicating any decided change in the condition of the market galow. were er unfavorable than otherwise, and shippers declared they could nob handle the stock eave to lowerprices ; claiming that their shipments of last week are losing & plenty of money. Holders, however, would not: give way, and, toward midday, New York, Bos- fon, Pitfsburgh, and Buffalo buyers entered the market, and, for a short time, trading was fairly active, at S425@L75 for commoR 10 ium steers, averaging from 1,076 to 1,250 lbs, snd st $5.00@6.00 for 00d ' to choico steers, saversging from 200 to 1,400 Ibs, which were substantially the closing prices of Jast week. Inlow grades the ‘market continned dull and drooping to the close. Toocal butchers com]flnin that there is at present littlo sale for beef, the sbuncance of poultry and game, and cheap cuts from the packing houses, materially lessening the consumption of the ex- ‘pensive steaks and roasts. Consequently, with pens literally filled with common native cows and rough stecrs, and thin Texas, and thinner Cherokee cattle, they were in a position to dic- tate terms 1o sellers, and the few droves taken by city butchers were bought ab rrices of their own making, Their purchases, - howerver, did mot perceptibly reduce the supply, and more than enmough of this scallawag stock remains in the yards to fully satisfy their wants for & week to” come. If the arrivalsof thin siock during the remainderof the week shall be very considersble, even the low prices. currens to-dsy cannot be sustained. There wera many Texas cattle on _sale, among them some choice corn-fed, for which $4.40@4.50 was real- ized. Conger Bros. sold 61 hend, Lvmgmeg 1,980 1bg, st 9440, and B, Btrahorn obtaine $4.50 for a very fine drove, averaging 1,127 lbs, but the ruling prices for these foreign cattlo were $2.25@2.75 for through droves, and $3.25@ 4.00 for corn-fed. Stockers continue in steady, moderate Tequest, at £2.75@4.00 for thin rnn%u. -Jota to thrifty young steers of from 700 to 1,0 Ibs, with sales mostly at £3.00@3.50. In the dry goods market, the week under re- ~view has been satisfactory in a business point of view, fair acfivisi prevailing in all depart- ments, and prices ruling firm and uniform, both for cotton aud for woollen textiles. Although some large orders have recently been placed, there seems ta b an entire absence of a gpecu- 1ative spirit, which goes far toward establishing the fact that the continued advance in prices._is Jegitimate, and fully justified by the enhanced cost of the raw materials,—cotton and wool. In comparigon vith their condition a month ago, stocks are, of course, much reduced, but they are, with & few exceptions, Btill in fair working order, xmd,l in point ©Of =4 sortment, ure complete. e changes in prices gince our last review have all been to an advance, the more_prominent being & 34c in ‘Atlantic, Indian nen% Nashville, and Agawam. ‘brown cottons; & 3¢c in Massachusetts fine browns; a i¢cin New York Mills and Blackatone ‘bleached cottond; 1c in Amoskeag and Willow Brook ticks, and 1c in -Amoskeag stripes. The carpet trade has been rather quiet throughont the past weelr, with no material variation in rices.
