THE CHICAGO-DAILY -TRIBUNE:, TUESDAY, -NOVEMBER: 26; 1872. 3 raEt s L fmproveme-{s Made ;i Contemplated by the Michizan Ceral Road. 2 —_— . Tie Chicazo, Pekin ‘& Soutestern, Chicags & Canaca Southern, and'icago & I nois River Ros. Mr. H. 2. Bargent, the Gopral Suprinon- dent of 20 Michigan Central Joad, reportsihad: ths compsny is this year expeidiog $5,000000 in impovements upon its main Jize. Thesela= proveuents consist chiefly in 87miles of doble track which, togother with tieuseof thelir ", Ling between Kilos and Jackson, will comiets } ollat 57 miles. of 264 of the rond, ss dable ¥ treki The company is this year wsing 3{000 ¢ tms of steel rail, about one-half of Which i re- % quired for the new double tre, and ihe bul- ance i used for repairs on4neold track, 2 of i which is being relaid wita steel rails as rejidly fas possible. The company this year has adied forty new locomedves, and sbout 800 freisht: ,cars to its rolling stock; “the efect ‘of whih® has been to ry largely increage the businees of the past izce months over the same period of any prevbus year. Treparations for the tunnel at Detoit hava aade it necessary to removethe locomoive andcar shops of the Campany from theircld loeation, and the latter havebeen placed at Jick- son, where the Main and Air lines unite, as dso where the Jackson, Lansing & Soginaw ind Grand River Velley branches diverge. Tirso shops are to bo mach more elegant and subsin- tial than they ever were before, being bailiof stone and iron, and, therefore, fireproof, Mmy railroad maen have prononnced them to be the finest in the country. These shops are fornih- ed with 2 52 horse-power engine. The Compiny is also constructing a half-circle engine houscof #fwenty-six stalls capacity, at Michigan City,in addition to the present accommodaiions there, and will Dext year build a ner ehop et the same place, The new car-works of the company will be located at tho Junction, so-called, three miles west of Detroit. They are to be built in the most substantial menner, and fitted with all the latest improvementis. e works are to ba very large, and so constructed that they may be enlarged for future demands. _ The burning of ome of the company’s car- shops at Detroit was a rather slight affair, com- pared with the sensational reports which were + Tife about it. The actual loss was only aboul 512,000, and the shop was £00n t0 be tom down, forthe reasons above stated. The general offices in the city have been re- erected on the old site, 2t the foot of South Wa- ter etreet, and will be occupied by the Company the 1st of December. The freight buildings of the company in Chicago, have been fully re- stored, and 2Aditional buildings erected to ihe extent of double the capacity of the old build- ings. g‘sew roads in the country are doing more then the Aichigan Central to improve their road-bed, :rolling stock and the means for keeping them 'in proper condition.” It well deserves tie ligh ‘character it has g0 long maintained &s a first- \class road in 21l its sppointmenis. = ANOTHER CONNECTION. Another railroad connection has been given Chicago in the completion of the Chicago, Pekin & Sonthwestern Road, which is to be operated in conjunction with the Fox River Branch of the Chicago, Burlington & Quiney Rond. The Jast il was laid on this line last 8sturday, and the Tosd will_be open for business next Monday. TThis roed begins at Streater, whers it connects with the Fox River Branch, thence it rune soutl- <rest to Alinonk, on the Illinois Central, thence 1o Eurcks, on the' Logansport, Peoris & Burling- ton Roed, 'and ends at Pekin. Thia route gives Chicago through rail connections with all ike important Southern and Somthwestern roeds, :ns opens_up & tract of country herezofore uot directly tribntary to this city. * TEE NEW BOADS. ‘We note, by the proceedings of the Common Council, that the Chicago & Canads Southern, and the Chicago & Ilinois River Roads, have, after much unnecessary delay, got their ordi~ Tauces throngh that hoporable body, giving 3hem the Tight of wey into the city. Shese are ot fmportant lines, and when compieted, will add Tiuch to oar présent syetem of railwe: The former rond is being equipped with Tails, end is being pushed ahead with rap Targe gangs of men are now grading the norel- “est portion in the Stato of Indiana. Clinton, Jowa, and Chicago, to in- sugurate the Dew route just opened by whe com- plstion of the Chicago, Clinton & Dubuque Rail- xot which connects with the Northwestern Fosd for Chicago at Clinton.
