THE FIRE-ALARM TELEGRAPH. ‘How the Introduction of the New Automatic Boxes Will Affect the Efliciency of the Chi- cugo Fire Department—Explanation of the New System of Giving Alarms. - There seems to be & general idea that the in- troduction of the sutomatic fire-alarm tele- graph instruments is going to complicate the already intricate machinery pertaining to the signaling of fires, whereas the reverse isthe truth. The old boxes were valuable enough, just a5 the old stage-cosch was valusble, end Would have remained in general use had it not been superseded by mors modern machinery. The fact is that the turning of the crankin the old machines was & delicate matter ; under the excitement consequent npon tLe discovery of fire, the turning in of the alarm was rather en- trusted to mechanical instinct than to calm rea< soning, and the signal man at the central office was more or less dependent upon his watch- ower to corroborate the news sent in, end de- &ne the precise situstion of the fire. With tho sutomatic boxes, there is & certainty of his re- ceiving the alarm distinctly. The despatch is sent by machinery, and therefore af- fected by no nervous excitement. The man who turns in the alarm bas merely one motion to make after opening the box. A brazen hookis the only thing visible, and he instinctively puils this in the only direction it will own- ward., Lethim pull till he is tired, he cannot affect the message, nor interfere with the work- ings of the little wheels within the iron casing. Ho hbes done all there is to do, . and science is bmey doing the rest. And there is the advantage of the sutomatic THE SUPERIOR COURT. Wudge Gary.) —743—Price v. The interior of the box contains the marvelons mechanism, which an excited pull at the hook sets in_motion. This consists of a spring, which sets in motion a series of wheels, whicl Ingeniously sever and connect on electric circuit in connection with the central office. Each box cc 1tains a battery, a telegraphic key, similar to that used by operators, and 8 gong. It is thins a completo telegraph ofice and firo station at once, though it does not occupy more room than an ordinary box. The pulling down of the hook on the ontside winds up the clock- work within, and thus even action is guaranteed. When once set going, the despatch is repeated af the central offico until the spring is uncoiled. To wind it agein requires merely that the hook be drawn down, when the message i8 repested. The employes of the Firo Alarm T .egngh Department, undor the effiient Superintendent, Mr. Chandler, aro en- abled *o telograph from cach box 88 it is visited; and the condition of the wires can be ascer- tained, and an imperfection instantly localized. There ‘are now in the city 135 of these automatic boxes, while 60 more are to be in place within 00 deys. The fire alarm system of Chicag. will then be perfect. The Fire Departmeat’s efiiciency depends entirely upon itsel now, and no blame can be shifted upon the helpless but perfec: instruments. Hawkins, aged 54 years, of the wealthy jewelry ‘menufacturing firm of Carter, Hawkins & Dodd, eloped last weok with Miss Mattie Lynch, & young lady of considerable musical talent, who for two or threo yeers has been very popular with Nowark audiences. A strange phenomenon has, it seoms, been diacovered by the British surverying ship Shear- ‘water, which vessel, laving accomplished her task for this season, has latcly returned to Gallipoli. The Inbors of the surveying party on board have, says the Dardanelles correspondent of the Levant Herald, been crowned with satis- factory results, and one highly interesting fact 'has been azcertained of which tho existence was nover before surmised. It wasfound that the ‘proverbially rapid current which runs from north to south both in the Dardanelles and in the Bosphorus is only euperficial, for at the depth of twenty fathoms the surveying party discovered in the course of their soundings that there exists sn under-current running with prodigious force into the Black Sea. To test the strength of this under-current a special epparatus was con- structed and attached to the ship's boats, when, astonishing to Telate, the boats were inmany places driven along against tho upper-current with a velocity greater than that of the steam launch belonging to the Shearwater. The same remarkable fact 18 frequently {0 be observed in the troubled waters of political life. Thers is an under-current of public opinion of whose ex- istence Btatesmen are often ignorant, Trusting entirely to the apparent strength of the upper- current, they become at last confused in their reckoning, and either run their. vessel on to the rocks or arrive at a goal they little anticipated at the commencement of their yoyage. He only ‘who studies the under-currents becomes a suc- cessful statesman in the end. New Method of Stopping Lealks. An ingenious method of stopping leaks in iron ships when af sea has been patented in England by Mr M'Cool, who effects his object by means of what he calls “ safety-plates.” These plates are, a8 artisans pay, ‘‘dished"—that is, they resemble a dish_in ehape; conseguently, when the hollow side is pressed against the plates of & ship, the “safety plate” fits closely, and will keep water out when held firmly in place with screws. By o clover contrivance, when once the leak is discovered, means can &t once be taken for fitting on the new plate, A weighted line is Sopped hrough the hole: this is lajd hold of by Jine# drawn under the ship, the weight is teken off_and replaced by & fcrew bolt; a plate, with indin-rubber covering the inner.edges, is next screwed to the bolt, is_dropped overboard and drawn into position by the line hanging. th.ruuih the leak ; an inner piate is thon screwed to the inner end of the bolt ; and thus the leak is com- ‘letely covared on the inside and on tho outside, and the water is kept ont. Thst this means of safety can be mado use of in the open ses, and under different circumstances, withont the necessity of docking the ship, i8 not the least among its recommendations. —— ——— —The Boston Transcript, the only daily paper which- sustained material 1085 by the great fire, presents the same neat and thrifty appearance 28 before the conflagration.
