MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 187, THE CHICAGO DATLY™ TRIBON RAILROAD TIME TABLE. R.. R. Company v. McAulsy et al; motion for new WISCONSIN. !"Results of the s.ccent Elec- tion---A Review of the Canvass. Congressional Candidates and Votes. The Next Legislature --- United Sté!es Senator Howe Certain of Re-election. From Our Own Correspondent. Bap1soN, Wis., Nov, 15, 1672 THE ELECTION. Official returns made to the Secretary of State, from thirty-four countics, complete statements published in the newspapers from a dozen more, and pretty reliablo reports from {he rest, show & majority of over 17,000 for the Republican candidates for President and Congrese, which, it isbelieved, the official canvass will make near- 1y 18,000. Tlis is some 8,000 more than was estimated by experienced Republican politicians the day after election, and a third more than the Liberals then conceded. The incresse of the ‘majority beyond expectations comes mainly from the newer-settled counties in the Seventh and Eighth Congressional Districts, which rail- conds lately built and now building”are rapidly developing, the total vote is considerably more than last year, but less than four years ago, partly owing to bad weather, partly to the indi jposition of many to support eithor candidate for President. The campaign was sharply contested by both parties, and earnest efforts put forth by State and Local Committees. tee, appointed by the delegates from Wisconsin to the Cincinnati Convention, issued an elabo- rate address, which was widely pub- lished ; but the Chairman of the Com- mittee, its author, the Hom. H., A. Tenney, soon after connected himself with the 5t. Paul Pioncer, and no effective organization swas made till after the Baltimore Convention. Then the Laberal and Democratic Committees /ad a meeting for consultation, putan Electoral | ticket in the field, having on it some of the most i honored Republicans in the State, such as tho A “Liberal” Commit= than the Democratic vote in 1868 in only Keno- sha and Racine Counties, though in all the counties some strong men went With the Lib- erals. " In the Second _District, the candidatas were he Hon. G. W. Ha zelton, of Columbie, Repub- lican, 'a man of feir abilities, and s clear and pleasant speaker, who. has made a good record in the gmgsaut Congress ; and the Hon. George B. Smith, of Dane, s prominent Democratic olitician since the days of ¢ Barstow and the balance,” but most heartily Supported by the Liberals,'s lawyer of ability oonarge practice, &0 effcotive speaker, most agreeable socially, and 8 most zealous partisan. PBoth candidates made speeches in all parts of the district. Four years ago, the Republicans had 4,169 majority in the present district,—in- cluding Columbia, Dane, Jefferson, and Sauk,— and, in 1870, only 706. This year, Grant has about 2,000; Hazelton, $1,600. There is a large felling off in the vote, mainly on the Republican side, though the other does mot equal 18G8. In the Third District,—comprising Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, and Richland Counties,—the candidates were J. Allen Barber, of Grant, Republican, & pioneer settler, an able lawyer, end fully imbued with the proverbial Grant County idéas of scrupulous honesty and close economy in governmental inistration, and who bas made sn excellent member his first term; and Ailan Warden, of Lafayette, Lib- eral, a miller and active busihess man, and Democratic Postmaster at Beloit under Pierce. The Straightont Democratic paper in the dis. trict, the Prairie du Ohien Courier, preferred Barber to Warden. That paper, by the wey, Taiged tho O'Conor ticket, and, though long the organ of Southwestern Wisconsin Democrats, and always ultra, there were only 11 votes for that ticket in Crawford County, where it is pub- lished. Several made it a pass.into the Grant camp. Grant hod 4,967 majority hera in 1868 ; Barber, Republican, for_Congress, 2,354 in 1870. Now, Grant has 4,150; Barber, a fow more. The vote bere shows & falling off from the last Prosi- dential eloction on both’ sides, except in Grant, where the opposition vote is incronsed some 250, and in Tows 19, 3 In the Fourth District the fusion candidate was the Hon. Alexander Mitchell, of Milwaukee, the present popular Representative, & man of much financial ability, of ample means, of large influence in railroad ‘and businsse circles, of whose benevolence Milwaukee has had many proofs. Fred. W. Horn, long 3 leader of the German Democracy, came ont 88 an independ- ent Straightout Democratic candidate, mainly with a view to_divert the votes from Greeley; but concluding, after the October elections, that ho was not likely to be elected President, and that, as between him and Mr. Mitchell, many Milwaukee Republicans would vote for the latter, be withdrew. General Fred. C. Winkler, an able German lawyer of Milwaukes, wasthen nom- inated by the Republicans, and made a brief can- vass, though, of course, without any hope of success, In the Counties of Milwaukee, Ozan- Xee, and Washington,—comprising this_district, —Seymour had 6,380 majority in 1868 ; Mitchell, 9,879 in 1870. Now, Greeloy hasa little less than 6,000 ; Mitchell, & little more. Walworth—C. L. Douglaes, Frank Telsad, C. B ibbs. Washington—B. §. Weli, H. . Sawysr, Waukeshe—F., G. Parks, D, W, Rhoda. Waupaca—C, Caldwell, ::@«hgrhsy;‘e;mm:‘El-.nlwzn. innebago—7 hos. W Foster, Alson Wood. | o Thos. MeConzell Republicans, 62; Democrats, 34 ; Independents, *4- The only district doubtful is ono of parts Of Waupaca and Outagamie Counties. Of the t 0 Liberal Senators, one is under the stronge 6¢ pledges to vote for T. 0. Howo for United Staty 18 enator. Of the Independents in the Assembly ' one is also thus pledged. Senator Howe (forno* one else is talked of) will, therefore, have at least 87 majority on joint ballot. Several mem- bers, if not 2 majority, of the Republicana elect- ed, are instructed to voto for Senator Howe's re- election, and there will not be the slightest o] ‘position. Ty & The applicants for official positions and place in connection with the next Legislature prom- ise to be legions, and it would be useless to be- §in to enumerate. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDNENT REJECTED. The people have mado a serious mistake in their own interests, in rejecting an amendment to thg Constitution incressing the mumber of Judgesof the Supremo Court from three to five ; of the greet need of which lawyers, and all fa- miliar with the business of the Court, are thor- oughly aware ; 2nd, no public opposition having been made thereto, no special effort was made in its favor, and the people voted it down on the score of what they believed tobe gconomy. The Judges are the hardest-working officials of the State, and yet cannot prgperly keop up with the business brought before them. curiton | OccasIONAT. THE LAW COURTS. . NOTES OF INTEREST. The family dispute of the Browns, reported fully in Tae TisoNE st the time of the fight over the title to the estatq, of the decensed Joseph Brown, in the County Court, was, on Ssturday, transferred to the Cook Crsunty Cir- cuit Court, to which the cage has beea appesled. The claim on the estate, on which the difficulty occurred, is for money feceived from E. Walker, (lessee of the stone quarry), $2,536; five years" board snd lodging, $300, 81,500; and keepiy, horse fifteen months, $90; or & total of 84,126, Judgment was given by Judge Wallace for $2,- 626, in favor of N. J. Brown, the claimaat, and it ia againt this judgmont that the appeal is en- ered. Tho statement made by the. Journal, that the Post Printing Company, on Friday, fled a de- nial of bankruptey, is incorrect, orit would duly have appeared in its [;laca in this column. Tho last entry on the docket is the msual rule to show cause, which rule hag been extended, and not yet answered. W. A. Butters & Co., on Soturdey, obtained an attachment sgainat Charles W.
