‘m=gght to fin THE CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1872 CITY REAL ESTATE. ‘WANTED--MALE HELP. ‘WANTED--FEMALE Pe - AR A A A A A A A AR MARRIAGE. Shonld a Girl or Her Parents Chioose Her Iusband ! From the London Scturday Review. The controversy 8 o which is the best of the two mothods of marrying one’s dauglter in use in France and England respectively has not yet been decided by any preponderating evidence. ‘Whether the Ssrents,—especin.lly the mother,— & husband for a dsughter, or ‘hether the gir], young znd inexperienced ps - she is, should séels one for hersclf, with the chauce of not knowing her own mind in the first place, and that of not understanding the real pature of the man sho chooses in the second,—these are the two principles con- tended for by the rival methods, and the Bght is etill going on. The truth is, the worst’ either is 20 wnfinitely bad that therois noth- * Ing to choose between them; and tho same i true, inversely, of the best. When things go well, the advocates of the particular system in- volved sing their gba:m, and show how wige they were; when they go ill, the opponents bowl their ‘condemnation, and say, “We told you 50.” The French method is based on the theory thet a woman’s knowledge of ihe world, and a mother’s intimate acquaintance with her daugh- ter's epecial teméwer and regirnments, are likely 0 be better les in the choice of & husband than the ufig:v fancy of a girl. It is assumed that she will be able to separate the reality from the appearance, to Win- now the grain from the chaff. She will appraise at its trne value a fascinating man- ner m&u shaky moral charecter at its back, and a handsome face will go for little when the evidence of the family lawyer proves the pover~ ty of the family purse. To the girl, a fluent fongue, fiattering ways and a tsking presence would have included everything in heaven and earth that s men ehould be ; and no dread of future poverty, no evidence of the bushels of wild oats sown broadcast, would have convinced her thet Don Juan was a mautais parti and & scomp into the bergein. Again, the mother uansfi’ Enows her daughters’ ogitions better than tfls deughters themselves, and can distin- guish between dfferent idiosyneracies and their respective needs as no young people arc able to do. Laurs is ronantie, sentimental, imaginative ; but Laura camot mend & stocking or make o ghirt ; her banis are emall gloves, six—and her arms are like tobacco-stoppers. Sho Las no povwer of endunuce, no persistency of gemfer, znd no executiveability; but she fslls in love with & younger sw just setting out to seck his fortuné in Australis ; and, if she is sllowed, full of enthusiasm anddelight, she marries himé and oes ont with him. In n year's time she is dead, fimfl.\y killed by hardship; or if sho has vital- ity enough to survve tha hard experience of roughing it in the bush, she collapses into a vwretched, bapgard, faded woman, prems- turely old, . hepeless and | doject- ed, the 'miseratle victim of circum- stances, sinking under s burden too heavy for ber to bear. Now a French mother would have foreseen all these dangers, and havo provided 2gainat them. Shewould have known the un- eubstantizl quality of Laura's romance, and the reality of her physital weakness and incapacity. She wouwd have kept her out of the sight and heariagof that fassinating younger son just off to Ausnalia to dig out his rough fortunes in the bush, and would ave quietly assigned Ler to some corventionalwell endowed man of mature 8ge, Who might mot exactly bea soul's idesl, sud whose rheumatism would probably make lum chary of the moonlight, but who would heve taken cam of the poor little frail body, dressed it in dainty gowns and luxurious furs, givenita soft couch to lie on, and a luxurious carriage to drive in, and have provided it with food con- venient and ease unbroken. And, in the end, Leara would have found that mamma was right, and Inex what was best for her; and that her ordinary-hoking, middle-aged care-taker wasa ‘better husiand for her than would heve been that adventarous young Adonis, who could have s.::en ber mithing better than 2 shakedown of ied leaves, ldca[f box for an arm-chair, and a cup of brick te: for the sparkling wines of her youth. It mayhe s humiliating confession to make, but the ol gaying about poverty coming in at the door andlove fying out of th window holds true in all cases where there is mot strength onongh tovongh it for the body holds the spirit captive, &xd, however willing the one may b, the wealnessof the other conquers in the end. On the other hand, Jfaria, squsre set, defy- ing, adventurous, wouldbe a8 one smothered in rose leaves as the wife 3f a rich man in Eng- land. The dull monotony of ceaventional life would half madden_her, wnd her uncomprom- ising temper would bresk out i a thousand eccentricities, and make hersonntless enemies. Let ber go to the bush if rou Like. Bheisof the stamp which bears horces, and ler sons will bo a stalwart race, fit for ths work before them. The wise mother Who X1 it in hand to organize the future of her daugkters would tuke careto find her a man and a fortune which would utilize ber energy and courage; but Marin, if left to herself, might, pethaps, fall in Jove with some cavalry officer of good famil 2nd expectations, whose present dish” woul 60on have to be exchanged for the stereotyped conventionalities of the owner of & place wilere, ps his wife, her utmost limit would be riding to bounds and taking off the prize for croguet. Such well-fitting arrangements as these are the ideal of the Xrench system; just ns the union of two hearts, the one soul finding its companion soul, end both living happily ever Biter, is the ideal of the Englizh system. Against the French les the charge of the croel eale, for 20 much money, of & young crea- ture who hes not been allowe: a choico, scarcely even thelaw of rejection; sguinst the Englieh there is the cruelty of suffering a girl's foolish fancy to destroy her whole life, and the sbsurd- ity of treating such a fancy as afact. For the French there is the plea of the enormous power of instinct and Labit, and that really it signifies wvery little to & girl what man she marries, pro- vided only that he is kind to her, and that she Eas not fallen in love with anyone else, a8 she is held suro to love the first presented. For the English thereis the counter-ples of individual needs and independent choics, and that womendo npot love by instinct, but by sympathy. The French make great account of the absolute vir- ginity in beert of the young girl they marry; and few Frenchmen would think they had got the kind of womsn warranted if they married one who had been engaged two or three times 2lready, and to whose afianced lovers had been accorded the familiarities which people in Eng- lend held innocent and as matters of course. The English, in return, demand a more absolute fidelity after marringe, and are generous enough to any falee starts before. ‘To them the con- trect 18 more a matter of free choice then it is in France; consequenily failure in carry- ing onttle stipulation carrics with it more dishonor. ~ The French, taking into con- sideration that the wife had notling whatever $0 say to the bargain which gave her away, are inclined to be more lenient when the theory of instinctive love fails to work, and the individ- uality of the woman expresees itself in an after reforence; alweys provided, of course, that he bien-seances are respected, and that no scan- dal is created. Among the conflicting rights and wrongs of the two systems, it is very difiicult to say Which is the better, which the wiser. Ifitseems & horrible thing to marry a girl without her con- sent, or without any more knowledge of the man with whom she is to pass her life than can be got by once or twice seeing him n formal pnfiic conclave, it seems quite as bad to let our women romn about the word at the age when their instincts are strongest and their rea- Bon weakest, open to the fiati¢ries of fools and fops, the prey of professed 2dy-killers, the ob- ject of lovelike intentione by men who mean abeolutely nothing but tie amusement of mak- ing love, the eubjects £or_erotic avatomists to study at their pleaswe. Who among our Sirls After 20 carries an sbsolutely untouched heart to the men she mardes? Her former predilection raay have beep & dream, s fancy—still it was there; and there are few wives who, in their lit- Ho tif's and moments of irritation, do not feel, sy I had married my first love, ke wonld. not have treated me s0.” Per- bsps & wiss man does mob care for & mere baseless thought; but all men are not wise, and to some a spiritual condition I8 25 roal as o physical fact. Otlers, however, do not trouble themselves for what has gone beforo, if theycan but_ secure what folows affer; but we imagine that most men would yather not Imow their wives' dreams, and that oel autre, however ehadowy, is nob theless a rival not specially desired by the average hus- band. : - e I 3spendence of life and free inter- course u young men_and maidens is, in its dey:. oerous in England, what must itbein Am.. whero soything.like chaper- onsge is unkuown, and where girls and boys flock togetlier without & mamia or o guardisn among them; where engaged couples live under the same roofs for months as's time, also with- ot & mamma or a guardien; and where the young men_take the young women sbout on ight expeditions along, and no harm thought byanyone? Isbuman matwe reelly different in America from what it iy in the Old World ? Are Columbia’s sons in truth like Erin's of old time, ¢80 good, or o cold?" It is a soying bard of acceplance to us who are sccustomed to regad our daughters as ous things to be taken care of; if mot qu:te 80 frail as the French Tegerd theirs, yet uot too secure and :certainlv not to be left too ith only young men for couch £0 thamselves wilh < onr lambs, 2ad W6 “To be sure_the compar- n in the Unitod States, and the conviction which every girl has that sho ake her own choice, helps to e Slcaighs. That is casy tobouader- e Tiseve is no temptation to eat green ber- ries in an orcbard full of ripe fruit. Butif this is true of America, then the conversc must be t206 of England, whero tho redundanoy of women o 5t " tho most patent facts of ‘the time, 2nd whero consequently they cannot so well aiford to indulge that pride of person which heaitates samong many boforo selecting one. In America Fhis pride of porson itself ercets something of & barrier between tho wolves and the lambs; but where the very groundwork of i is wenting, 88 in Epgland, it behooves the nutura.( guardians to be more on the watch, and to tale care of those who can- not take care of themselves. Whether or not that_care should be carried to the extent to which French parents carry theirs, and espozial- ly in the matter of making the marriage for the c{mghter, and not lotting her make it for her- sclf, we leave en_open question, . Perhaps a little modification in the practice of both nations would be the best for all concerned. Without trusting quite 8o much to instinct as the French, we might profitably deny a little more than we do to the independent choice of those who are too young and too ignorant to know what they want; or what they have got when they have chosen; and without letting their young girls run all abroad without direction, the French might, in turn, allow them some kind of human Ereferunca, and not treat them as mere animals, ound to be gratcful to the hand that feeds and docile to the moster that governs their guardians. Jook out:- for wolves. ative paucity of womel them, them. —_— England’s Young Nobles—Effects of theFalse Positionin Which They Are Placed. Zondon Corvespondence of the Cinctnnati Comer- cial. 2 A great deal of the licentionsness of aristo- cratic families arises from the felse positionin which the young nobles are placed dwin the earlier part ot their lives, whilo weiting to enter upon their estates and occupation. . They must beidle. It is unconventional for them to engage in any business or profession. J ugt in the proportion that they are clover and vigor- ous thers is & probability that their powers will run to waste or be spent upon improper ex- citements. I have in_ mind as I° vrite a young Lord of & great deal of wit and fores, wEo for some time Lept the neighborhood in which he lived in s perpetual scandal by his be- havior. Hewas in tho habit of playing the coarsest practical jokes on anybody, and when o had nothing else to do, would go around & village 2t night ringing door-bells. He was a very strong young man physically, and on one occa~ sion, vhon Lio vas pessing by & country gentlo- man’e house he stopped to spesk to the ostler. Observing that the ostler was a strong fellow, the idea struck him that he wonld like to have & pugilistic_encounter with him: “My good fellow,” said the Lord, “I should like to have I fight with you. I think Ican lick you." “a dunno o you be,” answers the hostler, *‘but you must be_‘the best man in these gLartB if yecan lick me.” ¢ Very well,” says the Lord, “lot’s go atit, andif you can whipme I'll givé you £5.” And’ at it, there in the stable-yard, they went for balf an hour, at the end of which' his Lordship was fairly used up. The ostler had to take him home in & wagon, and was inmuch consternation and anxioty when he found that the pulpy mass he was conveying had to be confided to weeping relations at a neighboring castle. However, his Lordship_ recovered slowly, and no eoomer was he able to do anything than he sent the ostler who had punished bim not £5 but £50. Well, after thet his Lordship got into various scrapes and was brought upin the Police Court, several times. But suddenly, by the death of Lord V., in Ireland, he came into the occupa-~ tion of immenee Irish estates, and I believe he now has the reputation of being ono of the ‘most faithfal, exccllent and philantbropio ‘no- ‘blémen that has ever lived in that country. So s0on as he had something to do he becames man, It is a rather drol! circumstance that when Le camo into possession he_gent for the ostler who had thrashed him, and gave him a high poition on his estates. Not long ago this eccentric nobleman had his neck broken by the fail of his horse, and he was deeply lamented by the poor of his neighborhood. Alexis in Asine-I¥is Beccption by the Maharajah of Johore--Battle Ie= tween a Tiger and a Buffalo. The Strails Obsercer, dated at Singapore on the fth of September, supplies the following re- port of the visit of His Imperial Highuess the ‘Grand Duke Alexis of Russia to the Mabarajah of Johore, and of his reception by the Eustern potentate : ¢ The Pluto left this port for Johore early on the 29th ult., with a number of gentlemen from Bingapore, and, having teken on board Eome officers from the Russian man-of-war, proceeded 1o the scene of action, arriving ab Johore, after o fine passage, at sbout 11 3. m. The Mahara- jah had m;ga every preparation for the reception of Prince Alexis. “ For the projected tiger and buffalo conten- tion there had been created two ring fences of stout nibong trees, one within the other. At one end of the interval between them was the tiger, the other the buffalo, the latter behind a drop scene of sil cloth, and the former bebind one of plank. Over the centre place was s plat- form erected, manned Ly natives, who were sp- ointed to raise the curiains in front of the two eading performers ub {hu sppointed Signal. The Prinee having arrived, and tho audience all expectation, the two curtains were drawn up or raised, and stripes and buff stood v%s @ vis. “Tho tiger seemed only wishful toimmediately sneak away, but the buffalo charged her (a fe- ‘male one) 2t once, Imocking herabout dreadfally. Every endeavor was made torouse the courage of the tiger, but it was of no avail. At last, by means of rope and pulley, the tiger was raised by the neck and let fall upon tho back of the buffalo, and, after making a lsst grasp st his neclk, fell off, and was immediately butted and pounded to death by the enraged buffalo. Tt is reported that s bottle of arrack was previously given to the buffalo zud some opium to the tigress, in order to raito the mettlo of the one and tone down the ferocity of the other. This appears to have been totally unnecesgary, as it evidently spoiled the matter in the very outset. It would evidently bemuch better on & future occasion to leave ench animal fo its own_resources, without the nse of stimulants on either gide. The tiger shonld have every en- couragement in case. The buffalo has the advantage of the tiger even in its native jungle, unless particular circumstances favor th Iattor, and even then the eventual chances are much in favor of ths former.” An Immensoc SnOW-P1owW. The Union Pacific Railroad is making prepara- tions for the winter, and are determincd to do all in their power to prevent the recurrence of the snow-blockades. At their shops in Omaha, they are building & snow-plow, & description of which we iehirum the Bee of that city. When finished, this plow will be the largest and most powerful in the world : Tho trucks on which it is built are very heavy and strong, and were cast especially for this plew. The platform on “the trucks is 23 feet long, end 10 feet 6 inches wide, &4 is composed of solid oak timbers, 8 by 16 inches. The timbers are hold together by 10 iron bolts, 13¢ inches in diameter, which run crossvise. This solid bed is fastened to the transom beams by 40 bolts, 20 over each truck. Tho indined slide, placed on the plat- form, is 22 feet long, and slopes at an an fa of 30 degrees, and is held_firmly to the bed by 40 bolts, of an inch in diameter, and is supported from behind by inclined posts, 6 feet long, 8 inches wide, and sixteen inches thick. The en- tiro length from the rear of the platform to the end of the glide is 82 teet. The slide is to be ironed, and an immense plow, of the ordinary shape, 18 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 5 feot high, and covered with iron 8-16 of zn inch thick, is to be securely placed upon it. Ox the point of this plov therois to be an_iron plate, stocl-pointed, 11 feot long, end 4 feet wide. 'This plate of course runs across the track, and only an inch sbove it. Tho rear of the pla'form will be boxed in, making a room 12 feet Ligh, 11 feet wide, and 10 feet long, for the purpss of kecping the_snow out. It will be furnished with o loor, 8o that, if neceseary, it can be loaded with iron. npfl::m?fini;u Fill meigh 50 tone, and will bo y threo of the heaviest engi: road.
