OCTOBER 30, 1872. ROBBERS ARRESTED. Bow $52,400 in Crrency, Kotes, Compons and Jewelry wre Stolen from the Nortiwestern Depot. - 38 Robbers Apprehended, and Nearly All the Property Recovered. eout six weeks 230 & wealthy gentleman _ted G. A. Austin, while passing through this cityon his way from Burlington, V., to Minne- apolis, Minn., wes robbed of a valise containing soven watches, notes, deeds, and mortgages smopnting to 580,000, $1,800 in currency, and £600 in coupons of Minnesota railroad bonds. The robbery was committed at the Galens Depoty on North Wells street, and was reported without delay to the polico suthorities. Dotectives were placed at work upon the case, and in o few days 5 man named John Peters was arrested * while endeavoring to dispose of some of the watches to & pewnbroker. Te wns induced to tell where the other watches were, and what had become of the pa- *me-s and money which the valiso contained. ‘The notes, deeds, and mortgages were recovered and returmed to the owner, but the money and coupors conld not be found. From the infor- mation obtained from Peters by the detectives, it appeerod that Lo had a partner in the robbery, nemed Fred. W. Nation. This man carriod off the valise, and was_tho first to examino its contents, | He appropristed the currency and conpons, ond left the watches snd ofher papers to Peters, and then fled thocity. IIo Sas not followed, bub the officers kept track of his movements through Canads and scme of the Middle States, feeling confi- deni that he would return'to this city a8 soon as ho imagined that the robbery. had been forgot- ton. Ho appears fo have arrived at this conclu- eiom recantiy, ss ho was observed by Detective Elliott on State street yestordsy, and taken into custody. He is now conflned at the Central Sta- $ion, and will be broaght up for trial as soon as Petera' case hes been dispozed of, The latter is in j2il awsiting the actionof the Criminal Court. Nation and Peters were not known to the police 25 the.ves of consoquence, and it is probablo that the eme for which thoy ar zhont o' suffer punishment was tho first 'bidg job with which they were connect- ed.. ~ Nation has filled a Tesponsible position in Tezewcll's tobacco manufactory, in this city, Dut he swindled the house out of a large amount of money. He was arrested for this crimo by Dotective Ellis, about seven months ago, settled the matter up in some way, and since then has Goubtless been actively exércising his dishonest ¥its. He sppears to be & young men of consid- erable respectability and intelligence, and is s rapid and fuent tallier when he feels disposed toconverse. He declines to say anything about the robbery of Alr. Austin. - THE LAW COURTS. NOTES OF INTEREST. An slmost incredible statement is mede in & bill, yesterday fled in the Circuit Court, in hich one Jumes Kernan charges William H. Eisson, attorney-at-law, of this city, with having taken advantage of his being drunk, to obtain his signature to a note for $100, of which ko only received §3, secured on_ Lot No. 5, in Xer- nan’s Subdivi-ion of Lot 1, Block , Rockwell's Eubdivision of the northeast quarter of Section 13, Township 39, which lot, Sisson aflirms, was absolately assigned to him, snd refuses to reconvey to the petitioner. Petitioner further slleges that he gave a note for S300 to William TLoab, secared on Lot-6 of the same block, which e *ailed to pay; and that the lot has been sold by enid Losb for §500. He therefore proya that tho pereons named be made parties to the suit, that an sccount bo taken of the tremsactions complainod of ; thet Loeb be restrained from Faying the belance to any one othor then the Jefitioner, and that Sisson bo restrained from ecciving such money, or esling with the prop- ety inany way. The petitioner seys he is Soung and inexperienced, ond & druniard, all of 3vich ia robably true; he also says that the o mctowere confederates in & scheme to rob L5, and that they sre no better than thieves, whith he will soon be called apon to prove. 'BANEBUPTCY NOTES. : The Batavis Paper Mspufacturing Company, of Batavia, in the County of Kene, petition the Conrt for the bankrnptey of the News Printing Gompeny, slleging for cense stoppage of com- Tmsrcial paper given in favor of petitioner fo the “xtont of £2,083.80; a mortgage of oue print- §og press and engine, types, and printing matert RS Crrus MecCormick, dated the 5th day of Oitober, with power of sale; and mortgage of 2 two-cylinder printing press, boilers, types, famiture, subscriptions, advertising, good will 2nd all it§ property and interests to herles S. Both Shanshan and West were ar- rested, 55 stated in yesterdsy's TRIBUNE, bub West obtained bail in the afternoon, and is now ut liberty. ‘A TMPORTANT QUESTION RAISED. The question is raised whether a debt, for puilding materiel and labor, is o lien on land in preferencato a trust deed exceated previously to Ihe execution of the worlk, and during the time the work was going on. John M. Steyens, brick- mason snd contractor, petitions the Circuit Court_for_such o lien against tho %ropn}'ky of the Balbach Smelting and Refining Company in the town of Lake. He gvers in his bill. of complaint that Lawson 8. Warner, Belden F. Culver, and A Ring, who represented thomselves respec- Tively o be_Secrotary, President, and General Buperintendent of the Compeny, were parties who entergk:lnix?at& a co:xtrx:]:,t méhfll‘xm} for th? supply of building materiel, an e laying of P Yor the Company, in the Town of Lake, on Savtsin lands of which Warner represented the Gompany to bo the owner in fee simple. In ac- ‘cordance with such contract he proceeded to erect such buildings, on which _the balance now claimed remains unpaid. He affirma that, on the 34 of December, said Warner, well knowing of ‘petitioner’s lien, executed a trust deed of the roperty to John Baldsvin, for the use of Robert E’{Falter; end he claims a preferentizl lien, and that the Xropnrty ‘be sold, in defanlt of pay- ‘ment of the debt. 1 ETATE INSURANCE COMPANY. In the matter of the Stato Insurance Compa- n, on the appeal of the petitioners Ring, Iale, 2d others, from the decision of Judge Floagett Aiemissing the petition praying that Treasuror Smith be_ compelled to pay to the creditors £512,000, on the ground that he had paid S157,- 000, thbs came bofore Judge Drummond, in the District Court, yesterday, Counsel for the defendant, Smith, argued at considera- Plo lemgth, snd raised the point that a creditor was not competent to ap- Pesl from the_decision of Judge Blodgett, =nd that the Judge had discretionary power in Fach cases, and counsel for the prosecution took p thess points and argued them throughout the whole of ihe dey. The arguments on the merits diffe in 0o material particular from “those publishedin full in Tae TRIBUNE at & formor stage of the proccedings. The story of Gavroche and his companion streot gamins as told by Victor Hugo, found o parallel in the police record of the South End Jesterdny. _This time, however, it was the Tre- mont strect bridge, and not the great plaster elephant, which gave the little Arabs shelter and Socurity. For a long time the residents of In- diana place aud neighborhood have been mysti- fied by a most unaccountable disappearance of ‘milk cans, brown bread and the various scces- Sories to brealifast which sro early distributed by milkmen and bakers. These articles of food, 80 mecessary to a proper appointment of the ‘morning meal, have been spirited away from un- der the very noses of their Milesian guardians. Other depredations have been committed in tho vicinity and some of them transcended in impor- tance the bread and milk larcenies. It was only a Baturday or two since that a lady who had been on ashopping excursion and was Teturning, beit Pelieved, with §36 in her portemonnaie, 10st the wallet and the money in & very unexpected man- nor. A boy snatched it from her hand, and after stesling siay tho pocket-book, like a_{rne Arab, stole silently away himself. ‘Whence ho came gnd whither he vanished were alike enveloped in s much mystory 28 was his own personzlity. But yesterdsy morning the misty aff2ir was thus leated up : Yesterdny morning g lady happened to soe some boys scrambling like great ratsin and out from under the Tremont street bridgo over the Boston & Albany track. Officer Ben- nett of Station 4, playing the terrier to their rat- roles, gave chaso and managed to catch one of the youths just a3 he wos Bsappoaring into the fostriesses of lis strango ubode. ~ Looking farther into the matter Le unearthed three more of the denizens of that cavern, sud.came upon the mecret of their ~habitation. Somehow the architecturo of the bridge hed allowed the construction of such & re- treat as is common in and among the wharves of New York, Here this singular fomily had estab- Jished their household gods, and here, boneath the rumble of all the Tramont street travel, they Todged and boarded. They slopt on comfortablo bods of straw, like tho memorable Margery, and thot their board know the fat of tho land was evident from the discovery of several generous Toaves of Boston brown breed, still warm from the bakex's oven. C From the New York Evening Post.. Theromanticstory of the bellsof St. Michael's Church in Chatleston, S. C., which we copied & day or two ago from Afre. Gatson’s bools, reminds 257 of ‘an incidont in relation to thab church Shich probably has never been printed, or if it Hao. is 61d enongh and interesting enough to be told again, W heard it elsted Iong sinco by an o1d Iady who witnessed it when ahe Was & young gil, porbaps cighty years 850 )5 Iady, who was_from Massachusetts, was on & visit ot Gharleston in the latter part of thelast century. Itwasata time when there occurred & fve ‘which burned up a considerable portion of tho city, and which for many years morked en ora in its_ history as ‘the time of the Great Firo;” though, doubtless, that ancient date has beon wiped out by events more recent and more disastrous. St. Sfichael’s, however, was then, a8 it hus always continued to bo, the pride of the citizens of Charleston, who truly clsimed thet it served, from its height, a8 a beacon to sailors approach- ing the coast, and was the last thing sighted, far ‘ot ab £ea, by those who were outward bound. And not oly wes it their pride, but it almost seemed to them that Providence had the beauti- $ul 0l church in its special keeping, when, the ‘morning siter the great firo, they turned their oyes upwird o seo its lofty Bpire almost piercing $ho clouds, while beneath and all aronnd it Iayin blackened ruins the fairest and largest part of their beloved city, and the ashes of 50 many of the homes of the stricken people. Tt had, however, barely escaped destruction, and that by an zct of heroism which is now, per- haps, forgotten in Charleston, but is recalled by a native of Massachusetts as s pleasant remi- Biscence of his childbood and of the vencrable Foman who told of the brave act of which she was an eye-witness. ‘Whilo tho fire was raging snd the whole cil secmed doomed to destruction, the Mayor an ‘Aldermen sat in solemn and anxions council to doviso waye and means to stey tho canfiagration and to provide for those who had lost all their Forldly possessions, and who stood half naked 2nd luvering by tho smouldering rains of their homes. The news came to them _presently that 8¢, Michaol's was in danger, for the fire was ap- proaching the square where it stood, snd 3 storm 5f gront burning _brands wes showered down Bpon its xoof and hurled sgainst its steeple. fon npon tho roof put out the fiery miseilos a8 thoy fell, and could reach snd dislodge those that fastened themselves npon the lower portion of tho spire; bub tho danger was that some ‘burning shingle, borne far up in the airby the galo, would male a lodgment out of resch, en- B ariag, not only the destruction of the church, Put sgrending the floming messengers far and wide from the great_ height over parts of the City a8 yeb untouched by the rain of fire. ‘o fear wes well founded. It was not long before & fying brand caught and fastened itselt upon the topmost haight of thespire. The spec- tators watched it anxiously, in the vain hope that 1t would drop beforo its Llazo cenght npon tho surrounding wood-work; but, held to its place, porhaps by the wind, it kindled brighter snd Erightor, tl 1t was plain that, unless some P nan hand could pluck it down, the spire snd all that would be involved in its destruction Fero doomed. The helplesa crowd looked up nd watched the burning brand, but among them. 21 there was not one men fearless enough or ac- five enough to attempt to scale tho giddy height, The Mayor and the Council stood in tho square below, powerless and despairing like ho Test, but offering a largo rowasd, o, any one who would attempt the daring foat of dis- odging that speck of fiame that lickered in the galo ot the very summit of the steeple, and grow §ach moment brighter, and would not fall. But prosently & mén appeared in the belfry of tho' church, and leaning over tho railiog fooked upward, 58 it messuring With his eyes the distance of the many feet of 0st perpen— Giculer sscont that still sy between him and 6 spot of flame nbovo him. ~ Thon he mounted upon the railing and stretched his hands _above him upon the - stceple. From tho crowd of thousands below went up one single mighty shout that almost shool thoair about him; then & great silenca fell upon the multitnde as thoy hold their breaths, and_their uplurned faces grow whito in the ruddy lght as they ratched his progress. Slowly, painfully, care- Tully and stendily Lo erept up and up, reising ‘himelf from ono elight projection to_snother, invisible to those below, but which served him for & foothold and which his hands could grasp. ‘Al around for many squares the fire raged un- heeded, snd men forgot their blazing homes ss by the light of their burning they watched this solitary E%m creeping hundreds of feet above them, up Bt. Jlichacls ateeple.. At length the Drand was within his reach, and holding on with one hand only he seized the blazing mass with the other, and hurled it clear into the square be- low, and the epiro stood out black' once more sgeinst the sky, withno light mpon it except the reflaction from the burning bouses. ‘But not yet did the crowd dare shout oat their exultation that St. Michael's was saved, for its savior atill clung, s moving speck beneath the golden ball, tho Hight of which sailors grested so far ot at ses. Slovly, painfully, carefally, Btosdily he began the more difficult descent, and ot till he had stepped safely and firmly over tho Tailing nud into the belfry of the church did the mighty shout of men who hailed a great de- liverance and recognized an st of daring hero- ism, rise above tho roar of the surrounding fire. 8. Michael's was saved and the man was gafe. At tho church door the Mayor and eorporation and a surging crowd of peoplo mot him. Who Te was that lind performed that fearful fest none knew;. they conld only see that it was o man who climbed the spire, but in the lurid light so many fect nbove them in the air they had not Recn that hie was black, Ho stood at thie church Goor, and they not only saw that he was black; he was a glave. “But none tho less had ho seved St. Michaol's; and, 26 the burgesses of Aix ordered their last megsnre of wine to bo given to the good horso Roland, who brought the good news from Ghent, 5o the ‘Mayor of Charleston gove, on the spot B heeadom o the negro slave who hed plucked the burning brand from the vory summit of St. Michuel's epire and maved the city and the charch. —Bishop Huntington, of Central New York, declines en invitation t0 leoture in & course by eminont clergymen of different denominations, before a society at Harvard College, becausa Houry Waxd Beecber isto be ono of the num- er.
