D e THE SAND SUPPLY. How This Important ltem of Building Material is Obtained--New and Ingenious Apparatus In- vented for the Purpose. | ~ Oao of the most important elements in the re- building of Chicagois one which is most apt to be lost sight of—viz., sand, thé quality of which is of vital consequence in determining {he strength and durebility of our stone and brick structares. In order to secure the best mortar it is indispenzable that the sand be wholly free from loam or earth, which are found largely mixed with the sand dug in the process of esca~ vating for fonndations, 80 that, if Chicago were *an inland city, she would be badly off in the matter of sand. As it is, the greab lake supplies this important item, as the eand tsken from the shore or the bed of the lake is perfectly ““sharp,” as the masons say—thet is, free from dirt, and containing com- paratively little gravel. An immense business is now done in furnishing sand. Alargé propor- tion of it is taken from the ted of the lake just ontaide the harbor to the right and left of the south and north piers, and also in the lake off North avenue, where a pier has been estended by J. V. Farwell fc \the purpose of securing the sand sccretion. .n both cases the sand is ‘brought up by an ordinary steam dredging ma~ chine and deposited upon barges and towed to the wharves in the city. A new plan, said to be much cheaper than this, has recently been put in operation on the lske shore at the foot of Erie street by Mr. J. T. Clarkson, who has in- vented & dredge_for the ‘express purpose. It consists simply in en endless wire rope extending out into the lake about 200 feet, the travelling along o parrow pier of abouf the same length, with horizontsl ehives at. cither end for the rope o turn upon, 2nd then return- ing to the shore, the entire rops forming & hol- low square. To the rope atthe right and left ave attached the dredges, which are made of boiler iron, and shaped like a bost, the bow of which operates on the principle of a jack-plane, #cooping up the sand and water, the latter being forced out at the top. As ono dredge goes ont & distance of abont 150 feet, the other comes in with its w;ég of sand, about half ‘2 yard, and is turned npside down and emptied on the shore by 2 team of horses, and tho sand is hauled away by tesms. The dredge is worked by a steam engine of 25 horse power. Buf one is in operation at irne!ant, but another will soon be attached. out three and one-half minutes are re- guired for a trip, snd the dredgo averages ninety yards .per day, which, at $1 per yard on the spot makes' & very good business of It, a8 but six men and two tesms are necessery to do the work. 8o great is the demand for the sand that none accumulates, teamsters being af hand to heal it away as 80on as it is brought in. They contract with builders at so much per yard, usually from £1.75 to $2, and as they are able to deliver eight or ten yards per day they make wages. After three or four days’ work, s a!:':? cntis made by the dredge, which is then ifted & few feet, and then brought back agein, the first cut hnvi.ns filled up in tho mean time. ‘The sngg!y of sand eeems to be exhaustless, ag the dredging does not seem to decrease the share accretions, from which, in former years, the sand was_obtained, but when the land grew 80 valuable the sand was worth more o remain than to be taken away, and the present system was adopted in consequence. EVANSTON. A Meeting of Citizens Determined Not to Grant Right of Way o the Chicago & Evanston Rail- way. Alarge and excited body of citizens sttended the meeting at the Town Hall, last Tuesdsy night, to further consider the petition of the Chicago & Evanston Railroad Company, asking for the right of way into Evanston on Sherman avenue. Mr. Gilbert was called to the chair and Alfred L. Sewall chosen Secretary. Mr, P. Judson moved thet the following reso- Iution, Iaid upon the table at the last meeting, e taken up: * Resolved, That this meeting of the citizens of Evans- ton, recommend the Trustees o grant the right of way through the village on Shermen avenue, subject to guch conditions and restrictions as in their judgment they msy think best. Mr. Judson delivered his opinion with grace, unction, and telling effect. Hoe opposed the yesolution, seeing no good in it, and great in- jury. As the new rosd could not make as good time as the Chictgo & Northwestern, 500 busi- pess men of Evanston, riding on it daily, would lose $800,000 worth of time, which, combined with the damage to real estate, would awell the smount to £500,000. 'W. H. Brainard was in favor of railroads, but - would not favor this unlesa it could enter &ide the Chicago & Northwestern. 5 George Watson thought the proposed r;ghb of way to a valuable franchise would be thrown sway on a dark-lantern corporation, who will not yeveal their stockholders, ¥ E. D. Browne thought it a nefarious scheme, #nd denounced those who had it in charge as Jobbyists and ewindlers. mTl'he resolution was then sgain lnid on the ta- e. ‘A motion was made to idsflnitalyfostplma the question, which was opposed by Judge J. B. on the ground of being uncourteous to the raifroad corporation. Hugh White thought the resscn the stock. holders would not reveal their names was that they intended to solicit bonuses of land from ong- proj ug—homam on theline of the proposed rnas, us swell their stock, and turn the whole over to New York capitalists. Judge Scates read the report of the Committes ©of the Chicago Common Council on_streats and slleys, which eeverely denounced the railroad company. 3 3 e motion to postpone indefinitely was then carried unsnimously, and the meeting ad- Jjourned. A = 'The Musical Society met pursuant fo previons notice, and partially effected an_organization. They will mest again next week, when they hope {0 have a larger attendance.
