Mr. Damrosch ordered the concerto last spring after hearing the rhap- sody in blue. The music itself began with a roar of brasses and quickly quieted down to a broad and insistent melody with shlifting harmonies with the motive of the Charleston on the wood tnstru- ments tempered by strings. The slow movement was a “blues” resembling melancholy negro improvisations.
