One reason for this high percentage is the fac very often the ignition is suspected of being the cause of a and is tinkered with, When this happens the percentage troubles is increased, for very often inexpert adjusting will put a fectly good ignition system out of action. There are a few very simple tests thet will qiuckly show if the trouble actually DOES lie in the Ignition ot not and these tests should always be made before you start trying to make any adjustments. To test the ignition, first turn on the ig switch and discon- nect one of the wires from a spark plug, then, wh the wire ab metal part of one press down th . to turn over the erigine. passing from th u are holding, certain that the not lie in the Distributor or battery, | If you find that no spark passes when this test is made, then it } shows the trolble lies in the Igni- tion distributor or some of its con- nections. The re jected to terrific strain. This strain is espec y cy corners sharply and when going over very roug ads. Reme the axle shafts support the whole of the weight of the rear of the car. Overloading is another reason why axle shafts sometimes break and leave you stranded on the road a long way from home, If you wish to avoid trouble with this part of your car, slow up when going around corners, do not overload and drive carefully over rough roads. Wheels and springs come next with a percentage of 7%. Care- less driving over rough roads and failure to p the spring clips tightened up are the cause of most of the trouble with the springs. Wheels should be examined occasionally to see that there is no exces- sive play in the wheels bearings and that lugs on detachable rims arc tight. Front axles and steering gear are each responsible for about 6 out of every 100 breakdowns. Lack of lubrication and neglect to replace worn parts are the cause of most of the troubles in these parts Keep all steering gtar and front axle connections well lubricated and you will probably never experience any trouble whatever with these parts. Lubrication accounts for 6 out of every 100 breakdowns. Failure to sce that there is sufficient oi! in the crankcase, use of wrong grade of oil or failure to’drain off the old oil eyery 500 or 600 miles, are the principal causes of lubricatien troubles. Universal Joints and Propelller shafts are the cause of about 5% of all automobile breakdowns. Universal Joint troubles are nearly always caused by failure to keep them properly lubricated, Strange as it may seem, the Carburetor is responsible for only about 314% of all automobile troubles, and most of this 314% is caused by dirt or water in the gasoline. Clear out the strainers in the gaso- line system now and again and draw off some gasoline -from the bottom of the tank about once every two or three and you will find that:most of your carburetor trouble will d Copyright, 1925, by S.
