Register complaints before & o'clock, cE 1 The Net Result One of the most shameless public transactions to take place in this county on the part of grown-up men was the tax raise attempted by County Commissioners Scott and Morgan upon oil corporations during the past week. If. county commis: sioners seriously believed that these corporations were dodg- ing t s this year or at any time within the past several » these saiie officials have been in office for quite a per- nd could have remedied the matter easily by calling the companies to account. The commissioners haye known all along that the com- panies had always made just return of all their taxable prop; erty, and it was only due to the fact of reckless and extrava- gant expenditure of public money and the resultant large over- draft in county funds, that tempted these two commissioners to seek additional tax money in this unusual manner. Accord-, ing to report it was tr first to induce one of the large com- panies to consent to a raise in value upon industrial preperty ¢f several million dollars and a reduction on field values in corresponding amount and the payment of some hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars in cash and have no controversy. When this was declined the war broke out. A couple of “ex- perts” were hired and placed on the job by the commissioners to take inventory of the companies as a basis for increase. When some thirteen million in additional values were taxed ainst the companies protests were instantly filed and the commissioners and their “experts” promptly convinced. that the property assessed did not exist or the assessment was ob- viously unjust The commissioners then removed from the tax rolls, after the same manner in which they had placed it there some six million dollars in valuees. A total of five million dollars in in- creases remained when the ard hearings were concluded, This vast wmount is all it protested by the companies as unfair as will be shown before the state board of equaliza- tion, and if not there then before the courts. It looks as if all that and Morgan have accom- plished by th arbitrary and foolish action in raising the taxes of law abiding companies is to let the tax payers in for a long and costly litigation, A Pacific Danger Chere is a danger of the United States and the British Vominions in the Pacific gradually grouping themselves in one great group and Japan and China and those lower down Scott the Asian coast forming a union and regarding themselves as opposed to the white group, In this, the question is nota clash of ixterest, but a question of sensibility, wounded dig- nity and national feeling, something that takes the utmost consideration, tact and judgment. The way to avoid war is by better understanding id better community of interests. Abolishing Inheritance Taxes That the full amount of inheritance taxes paid to states be deducted from the Federal tax is proposed by Chairman Green of the house ways and means committee, the purpose being to prevent or remedy the overlapping of taxation upon the estates of decedents. At present. but twenty-five per cent may be deducted. He opposes coupling with his proposal any ion that states shall abandon the levying of income Dairy Products A high record in the use of dairy products was established in 1924. Members of the mis- sion radioed a message thanking the war department, praising the advanced technique in the American air forces and describ: ing as nothing short of marvellous the progress in the automo- tive field. Tt ix interesting to note that Germany sent a mis: sion here to study military aireraft when this phase of defense was forbidden Germany by the Versailles treaty. The Smuggling Problem The problems of preventing smuggling of liquor and nar- coties across the Mexican and Canadian borders is acute, As- sistant Secretary Andrews of the treasury department finds, The treaty negotiated recently with Mexico, will help, but is not effectiveuntil ratified by the senate.
