Aside’ from his commendable rec. ord Mr. Barton made an extensiy investigation as to the kind and} character of man he was securing. Results of this investigation, which appear elsewhere in this issue, uni- formily indicated Mr. Marquis’ high yereonal character and his excep- tional professional ability. He was educated for the legal profession and became connected with some import- ant, insurance litigation. After t: ing an actuarial course he spent year with a rate book in the field increasing the company's production by $526,000 of personal paid-for busi- ness. The following nine years were spent in the home office of the same company where his value as an ex- ecutive was profitably demonstrated in every department of the com- pany. His services were sought by many of the leading companies of the country. In 1909 he became as- sistant general manager of the West- ern Union Life of Spokane, Wash., and the rapid progress of this com- pany dates from the time of his coming. Four years were then spent in general consultation work in which capacity he served the insurance departments of several states. In 1918 he became acuary of the North- ern States Life Insurance company of Minnesota, and was elected, suc- cessivel, ecretary and later pree! dent of the company, At all times, however, Mr. Marquis found time to give personal direction to the company’s legal and actuarial work and to spend time in the field. In an interview Mr. formed our reporter: “The chief reason for transferring my field of operation lies in the fact that Wyoming furnishes a broad field for an honestly conducted and conservatively managed company. It is the only state in the union that has no home company. During the stringent years of financial re-adjust- ment the business of life insurance received a severe set back. In 1923 there was written in the state of Wyoming, applications aggregating seventeen millions of insurance while twelve millions of insurance was ter- minated. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota suffered likewise. With the return of prosperity and the development of Wyoming's un- limited resources much of the ter- minated business may be rewritten and a company of substantial assets builded up. Minnesota has nine home compan- jes.
