J 7 ts > My GEN. MITCHEL SUMMONED. IN AINGRAFT CASE Committee Determined To Sift Dispute to Bottom. - WASHINGTON, Feb. 13. — The house aircraft committee opened another chapter yesterday in. the hearings which have stirred up army «nd navy circles by calling a number of former army filers who served in France with Brig. General putchell, assistant chief of the army ‘air service, and central figure in the present controversy. General Mitchell himself was sum- moned to re-appear before the, com- mittee. The general, according to witnesses, disobeyed orders during the 1921 bombing tests off the Vir- ginia Capes. Captain A. W. John- son, whom General Mitchell had previous referred to as the “junior” Naval officers in command of the tests, declared he would have court- martialed the army officer had be possessed the authority. Ww. J. Schauffler, who was a major in the World war, told the committee that the statement by Brig. General Drum of the army general staff, that twelve antli-air- craft guns could ward off an air- plane attack was ‘absolute rot.” Eixperienced aviators, he said, “snap their fingers” at antiaircraft guns. FARM RELIEF 1S AGAIN SUBJECT OF HEARINGS Joint Commission Told Emergency Needs Have Passed. WASHINGTON, Feb. 13—Con- tinuing their efforts to work out ‘@ program of farm relief legis- lation on the basis of the recom- merdations of the president’s agri- cultural conference, the senate and house agricultural commission again called members of the conference for a hearing. Louis J. Taber, a con- ference members, was called before the house committee for discussion of the bill framed by Chairman Haugen to carry out the conference proposals regarding cooperative mar- keting. Chairman Casey of the con- ference yesterday endorsed the Haugen measure, declaring, how- ever that much depended on the selection of the right type of men for origing] membership in the fed- eral cooperative marketing board to be created by the bill. Mr. Taber told the committee pein? was a lack of co-operation be- Classified Rates Two cents per word or ten cents per liné. . NO AD LESS THAN 30 CENTS. The board, he sald, should include the secre- tary of commerce as well as the sec- retary of agriculture, although this was not vital. Under questioning, Mr, Taber as- serted there was no explanation that would benefit a farmer ‘looking the sheriff in the face,” and that the conference proposals were designed to bring about permanent benefits to agriculture in from three to five years, Excepting the Itvestock indus- try, Mr. Taber declared the emer- gency confronting agriculture had passed when the conference met and the conference members thought tt advisable to recommend at pres: ent only such legisidtion as could be “easily enacted,’ by the present con- 88. While Mr. Taber was giving his testimony, the senate committee lis- tened to an explanation of R. W. ‘Thatcher, a’ member of the confer- ence, who said recommendations made so far should not be taken to mean that a “complete report” had been submitted. President Coolidge, he said, sug- gesied “something for agriculture comparable to the stabilizing influ- ence which the federal reserve sys- tem has for finance.” HELP WANTED—MALE eT WANTED--Men, women and chil- dren's haircutting, 40 cents, Hair- cutting specialists, 116 1.
