DONT CALL THIS BET OFF. {LL WIN BOT THE . MONEY WILL GO FER 1 ARE MY FONERAL What the Banks Make. All that is necessary to make a lot of money and live easy is to be a banker. That is a very eroneous idea that is widely prevalent. Banks do and must spend a great deal pf money. to handle money safely and profitably, which is an example of the neceésity, of every one consider- ing very carefully the dayesting: ot his savings. It isn’t at all a ques- tion of getting together a lot of money. For s¢veral months a num- ber of banks jn this country have been earning little or nothing be- cause they haye too much money. Their deposits; have mounted up and interest rates have dropped’ to as low = 2 per cent for call money —and lower—to. as low as 2% ‘per cent for short tlme loans and 3 to 3% per cent for commercial paper. Many banks have so much money !t is \difficult.to- keep it both profit- ably and safetly employed. I heard un especially astute bank- er explaining to a traveling sales- man, an old acquaintance, the other day why.even the banks with. mil- ions of dOlars at their command e held to small profits by the ne- cessity for safety and sound busi- ness. The s@iesman had intermit- tently: borrowed small sums from the bank and "had: paid’ 6 “to: @ per cent interest. He had. a notion, that ithe bank made about 4 to 5. per lc commodity *. oSMiachinery. The banker gave him actual figures, which ,because they are pretty cor- rectly meprewenitartve: I jotted down said the banker, “‘ab- sorb about 70 per cent of a bank's gross earnings. Hence, we make clear but. 1.5 per cent on the loan for which you paid 5 per cent. About 35 per cent of expense is the inter- est the bank mist pay on deposits. That's the largest single item-of,ex- pense. Salaries run about 20 ‘per. cent. Taxes take another 5 per cent. That leaves about 10. per. cent to be divided between rent and other expenses. “Of.course, all banks do not have the same proportion in expenses, but they come near that average or there is a screw loose, somewher ‘The smallest and the largest banks pay a larger proportion for.salaries and rents than do medium-size. “The next time you pay a dol'ar of interest to a bank don't think the bank gets it all. Twenty cents or thereabouts goes to — salaries, thirtyf#ive ‘cents goes to depositors, and a- nickel goes to ‘government, The bank is doing well if it can put: 30 cents into its own pocket, to pay interest on the capital invested and to-give a-return for tho risk ik took in lending you the 4 ‘Trade News with three*neéw concerns preparing itor MIARER PRR ULECAUES. company of Muleshoe.
