SUNDAY, AUGUST 31, 1924. HOUSEKEEPING ATO ON AOND Family of Three Will Tour United States And Dominion. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. West and their daughter, Miss Remona West, and eir foxhound, Brandy, formerly of Port Huron, Michigan, have closed up their residence at that: point and will be at home for the next five years on the highways and byways of the United States and Qanada in their housekeeping automobile. ‘Thirty-six days out of Port Huron, the, Wests reached Cleveland and stopped to exhibit their traveling home at the Chandler factory, !nas- much as their remarkable wheeled residence was built on a standard Chandler chassis. The Wests’ home is complete to the smallest detail. The body, which !s amply lighted with large windows, is 7 feet 6 inches wide, 14 feet long, ond 6 feet high. It 1s equipped with window screens, radio, Victrola, ‘cc box, folding bed, electric lights, rock- ing chairs, clothes-press, kitchen ca- binet, stove, and a stationary wash- stand. A sixteen-gallon tank car- ries water, and an oll heater provides hot water whenever needed. Mr, West even has a cellar, a:com- partment 3 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 8 inches deep, in which he car- ries 30 days’ provision: The entire car with its passengers weighs 6,500 pounds. The only change from the original chassis was to equlp it with 7-inch cord tires and heavier springs. ‘The Wests will visit every state tn the Union, and some parts of Canada during the next five years, Mr. West informed officials at the Chandler factory that the Pikes Peak Motor, despite the unusually heavy load, is capable of giving his rar a speed of 50 miles an hour, though lis “Average driving speed on good roads is between 25 and 30 miles an hour. On leaving Cleveland tfe Wests headed for Washington, and will then proceed to New York City. They will then turn about and direct to the Pacific Coast. The whole fam'ly fs enjoying its new freedom. If the car is left {n a precarious position better use the parking lights even if the local ordinance doesn’t require you to do ‘so. If someone ran into your car they wouldn't look you up to tell you the sad news, And if you didn't happen to have collision insurance _you would be out of luck. In fact it is better to just plan tn a gen- era way where you are going, then when you come to an interesting spot you can stop for as long as you like and enjoy it. By the time you have all your camping equipment Icaded, you hav zdded about half as much weight on the car as the we'ght of the driver and passengers «mount to.
