Many motorists, at this time of year, are making trips into the mountains, Little do they realize that they are operating their auto- mobiles under conditions different than during the last six months. The heat is much greater and consequently the water in the motor boils very quickly. In most cases this is not the fault of the auto. mobile, but of the owner, who has been negligent in the inspection and upkeep of his car Already this s on, we have had motorists come into our shop claim- ing that something was wrong with their car, as it boiled going up Cas- per Mountain, In each instance we found that the fan belt was so loose that {t could be twirled with ease. ‘The fault lays at this point. Your fan belt must be tight enough so that it is very near im- possible to turn it except with great force. .. Just because your fan rotates is no sign that the fan belt is tight enough, for the fan belt that is a/my shirt and get mad over, but trifle loose will not rotate the fan|thinking that there ‘was a chance at sufficient speed to do any par-|that mabe the diferentil might have ticular good. loosened up in the long trip that It is also essential that your crank I asked one of the navy guys case be drained every four to five| what is the matter with the bus, hundred miles and refilled with|and he takes a look in her cockpit fresh oil of a good which is my own individuality name If these two things are watched and if your motor is in good me- chanical condition your car should climb any of these hills in Wyoming without heating excessively. ————_— ENGINE BLAMED FOR SPEEDING Flexibility Lacking in| Some Motors, Is : Claim. Automobile drivers speed at 25 to 30 miles an hour in crowded traffic because they. cannot slow down their cars to two or three miles an hour. Lack of flexibility in engines fre quently prompt drivers to ignore safety rules, according to A. B. C. Hardy, president of Olds Motor Works and a member of the raffic Planning and Safety Committee of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce “We have tried to discourage the ss driver through laws carry ing fine and jail penalties and deavored to encourage and in: struct him by means of educational campaigns,” sald Mr. Hardy. “Both these measures have been necessary and have shown results, but auto- mobile engineers and manufacturers can further help make reckless driv- ers careful by giving them no me chanical excuse for excessive speed in traffle. “Cars in the hfgh priced field have this required flexibility, but many of the lower priced cars, which are in the majority, stall or start to “buck” when throttled down too low. As a result driving in slow traffic requires constant shifting of gears, and fre- quently drivers speed up and en- deavor to pass a group of slow mov- ing vehicles with heavy traffic com: ing in the opposite directton rather than be put to the trouble of fre- quent gear changes. “This requisite of the ability of an engine to operate slowly without trouble was recognized when the Olds Motor Works designed its pres- ent six cylinder car. The engineers were required to design an engine that would throttle down to a mile or two an hour over every type pav ment and road that would be en- countered in ordinary driving. Thé resulting flexibility was an {mport- ane contributing factor in making posible the run made from New York to Los Angeles by Cannon Ball Baker in an Oldsmobile with al) gears but high removed from the transmission.” oe Cal} the Tribune for highway in formation. Height of line over each price shows that car’s piston displacement —power. Note Jewett’s extra power value. OU get from an automobile mo- tor exactly what the manufac- turer puts into it. Big power from a small motor can only be secured by speeding up the motor. It is done by using smaller wheels or a special gear ratio. So at the same speed onthe road, the smaller motor must turn over many more times than the big motor. But that is like setting a boy to doa man’s work. It means overstrain and early breakdown. Small Motor=Shorter Life And if the smaller, underpowered motor is not speeded up it struggles along, always overstrained, always delivering less performance. Again early breakdown is sure. It can no more deliver big motor performance than you can lift yourself by your bootstraps. Now—what advantage does Jew- et big motor give youP It gives ample power combined with a slower motor speed—eliminating strain, assuring long life and free- dom from repairs. You Need Jewett’s Power You want Jewett’s power when you go slowly over rough roads in high gear— when you want to accelerate quickly—when the traffic signal turns—to elimb hills inhigh. You want it to fill all the everyday needs in driving. And it is these same needs that quickly wear out the smaller motor —whether high or low speed. Power is the sound measure of value. Smaller motors cost less to build. Note the chart above. Five cars shown aboye sell for less in the beginning than Jewett. But in the end you will spénd more because the underpowered motor will wear itself out sooner. The big, am»ly-powered Jewett stays good! Higher price should buy greater power. Yet eleven well-known six- cylinder cars, costing more than Jew- ett, actually have smaller motors. See the chart. Just think! A Jewett with a larger motor sells for $230 to $725 less. : Compare Jewett’s Power and Price So you see what we mean when we say Jewett’s ‘power gives extra value in longer life, better performance and freedom from repairs. For only alittle more than flimsy light sixes cost, you get the Jewett with its big, powerful motor. And for a lower price than that of eleven other six-cylinder cars, you get in Jewett a motor that beats these same higher priced cars in long- lived power and performance. Come in and get acquainted with Jewett’s ample power. Let us show you results on the road. (643-4) THE LEE DOUD MOTOR COMPANY e CASPER—424 W. Yellowstone—Phone 1700 LAVOYE—Wyo., Branch, Yeoman Bldg. I used to divide my gasoline business among them, Is it any wonder that gasoline bills were high or that Ihad a troublesome motor? Finally, a friend explained that while my plan was excellent ministerial diplomacy, it was not very good business. I accepted his suggestion to try to find out the best gasoline and use it all the time. I made some tests myself, asked a lot of others about gasoline and deter- mined to use Conoco. I have used it ever since with the great- est of satisfaction. “I would not be guilty of even implying that all other brands of gasoline are bad, but I am glad to recommend Conoco be- cause it has reduced my gasoline bills and, better still, has stopped the trouble I used to have just about all the time when I was trying to use a mixture of two or three sorts of gasoline. I find it easy to buy the same high quality Conoco wherever I go. It is probably for sale in more places than any other gasoline and even though there were no other ad- vantages to be gained by using it, I would recommend Conoco because it is.so well distributed.” ‘The only worth-while test of gasoline is the one which determines its range ¢ of volatility—whether it has the right proportions of low, medium and higher fractions (boiling-points), to satisfy the requirements of modern carbure- tors. Conoco more than meets the U. S. Government specifications based on such tests. It is properly called the balanced gasoline. The maximum of power is put into Conoco in a way that enables the average car to get all this power out and put it to work and that means economy and satisfaction.
