The largest tire in the world is being built at the Goodrich factories in Akron, O. The tire, designed by the engineering division of the Unit- ed States Army Air service, with Whom Goodrich engineers collabor- ated, will measure more than five feet high with cross-sectional mea- surement of 14 inches. Goodrich engineers estimate that the building of this tire, which is the first of set, will require ap. proximately yards of fabric, 52 inches wide, several pounds’ of steel wire for the bead construction and approximately 70 pounds of. com- pounded rubber. If this: amount of raw material was applied in the construction of 30x3%4inch tires, it would make 35 of them. However, more rubber would be needed in the costruction of the small automo- bile cases, for a smaller proportion- ate amount of rubber is used in the construction of airplan tires owing to the small amount of wear exper: ienced by the tread. The special molds for the struction and vulcanization of this b'g tire requires special machinery to handle. ‘This equipment was re- cant!y completed at the Goodrich pliant, where plans have been made to build more of these large tires as the ‘teris are completed on the one con: now being built. The huge tire will be part of the eauipment on a new type of giant aircraft, which is soon to be tried at McCook Field, Dayton, 0. The tire—a 64x14 inch straight bead cord—will sustain a normal load of 20,000 pounds at an inflation pres: 5 pounds. A spectal wheel has been designed to accommodate this new tire.
