C. OWEN (Copyright, 1924 The Casper Tribune) SAN FRANCISCO, June 26.—Con- greasmen and * geckers after Public office or public acclaim might do well to emulate Jack Dempsey, heavyweight pugilistic king of the universe and develop @ bump of re ciprocity. Dempsey has just been in San Francisco five days on a movie shooting expedition. In that interval, the man who bowled over’ Willard, Carpentier, Firpo, et-al., by might of his manulles, garnered almost twice as much free newspaper space as any statesman or other celebrity, in- cluding a couple of presidents, who ever visited San Francisco. During the ‘five days, he received 217 columns of type and photos ‘in six local newspapers—enough to com- pletely fill two eight. column. news. papers of twelve pages each and still leave several columns over for ‘good measure. Newspaper men hers, analyzing Desnpeye ability “to “make” both front and sport . pages with his doings, attribute it mostly to one thing—his largely developed bump of reciprocity, which causes Jack to hunt out and seek to do favors for anyone who ever did favor him. This reciprocity thing, say the newspaper scribes, always has enough “human Dempsey ts no starnger to San Francisco. It was here and across the bay at Oakland, that Jack got ‘his first start up the fighting ladder. And as his pork and bean days were slim pocketbook days, there were lots of chances for those who knew Jack to do him many favors. When the champion insisted in partaking of $4,770.46 meal over at Ma Kearns’ little bungalow in Oak- land, while a whole army of movie supernumeraries meanwhile stood idle, it. was just a sample of nts re- ciprocal bent, say local sport writers. One of the first things. Dempsey did when the movie boat landed him here was to seek out a little water-| front restaurant which long has been known for {ts sustaining and toothsome ‘re? mike," or corned beef and cabbage. Jack had eaten there many times In his less prosper- ous fighting days, sometimes ‘‘on tick.” Of course, a crowd followed Jack. And he saw that it followed there at least once each day during his visit. Over in Oakland, Dempsey's best ‘friend is Tommy Simpson, a four- round boxing promoter. It was Simpson who really gave Jack his first fighting chance by advancing him transportation from Saft Lake to participate in a bout that paid $15. In that first fight for Simpson against Al Norton, who held him to a draw, Dempsey, entered the ring with a fever of 102 degrees. Simpson knew Dempsey was in-no condition to fight and offered to let him off. Nothing doing. Dempsey knew Simpson had advertised the pout and stood to financially so he went on anyway. Last nesday night, ‘Simpson of his reguiar boxing shows ae Oakland. Two days before Dempsey called him on the phone. “Put me down to referee your bouts,” Jack told him, “Maybe I can pack ‘em in for you and help keep the old wolf from the door.” Simpson put him down in a little benefit, both: vocally and ee al ever staged in Los Angeles. During. his. stayhere,, Dempsey spent most of his spare time hun: uta up old friends. In the process he acy cumulated 217 columns of free bey paper publicity, —_— newspaper announcement and a crowd of 32,000 turned out. ” Once down, in Los Angeles Mrs. Jack Doyle, wife of a boxing pro- motor, for whom Dempsey also fought in his pork and bean days, told her husband that Jack was the cleanest and most gentlemanly fight- er she had ever met.
